    APOE and FABP2 Polymorphisms and History of Myocardial Infarction, Stroke, Diabetes, and Gallbladder Disease

    Dysfunctional lipid metabolism plays a central role in pathogenesis of major chronic diseases, and genetic factors are important determinants of individual lipid profiles. We analyzed the associations of two well-established functional polymorphisms (FABP2 A54T and APOE isoforms) with past and family histories of 1492 population samples. FABP2-T54 allele was associated with an increased risk of past history of myocardial infarction (odds ratio (OR) = 1.51). Likewise, the subjects with APOE4, compared with E2 and E3, had a significantly increased risk of past history myocardial infarction (OR = 1.89). The OR associated with APOE4 was specifically increased in women for past history of myocardial infarction but decreased for gallstone disease. Interactions between gender and APOE isoforms were also significant or marginally significant for these two conditions. FABP2-T54 allele may be a potential genetic marker for myocardial infarction, and APOE4 may exert sex-dependent effects on myocardial infarction and gallbladder disease

    Optical/Near-Infrared Observations of GRO J1744-28

    We present results from a series of optical (g and r-band) and near-infrared (K'-band) observations of the region of the sky including the entire XTE and ROSAT error circles for the ``Bursting Pulsar'' GRO J1744-28. These data were taken with the Astrophysical Research Consortium's 3.5-m telescope at Apache Point Observatory and with the 2.2-m telescope at the European Southern Observatory. We see no new object, nor any significant brightening of any known object, in these error circles, with the exception of an object detected in our 8 February 1996 image. This object has already been proposed as a near-infrared counterpart to GRO J1744-28. While it is seen in only two of our ten 8 February frames, there is no evidence that this is an instrumental artifact, suggesting the possibility of near-infrared flares from GRO J1744-28, similar to those that have been reported from the Rapid Burster. The distance to the ``Bursting Pulsar'' must be more than 2 kpc, and we suggest that it is more than 7 kpc.Comment: 21 pages, 5 JPEG plates, 2 postscript figures.     Characterization of a broad-based mosquito yeast interfering RNA larvicide with a conserved target site in mosquito semaphorin-1a genes

    BACKGROUND: RNA interference (RNAi), which has facilitated functional characterization of mosquito neural development genes such as the axon guidance regulator semaphorin-1a (sema1a), could one day be applied as a new means of vector control. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast) may represent an effective interfering RNA expression system that could be used directly for delivery of RNA pesticides to mosquito larvae. Here we describe characterization of a yeast larvicide developed through bioengineering of S. cerevisiae to express a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) targeting a conserved site in mosquito sema1a genes. RESULTS: Experiments conducted on Aedes aegypti larvae demonstrated that the yeast larvicide effectively silences sema1a expression, generates severe neural defects, and induces high levels of larval mortality in laboratory, simulated-field, and semi-field experiments. The larvicide was also found to induce high levels of Aedes albopictus, Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The results of these studies indicate that use of yeast interfering RNA larvicides targeting mosquito sema1a genes may represent a new biorational tool for mosquito control

    Food Habits of Deer in the Black Hills

    This study was conducted in two parts for Master of Science theses by the senior authors of Parts I and II. The study in the Northem Black Hills (Part I) was completed in 1968. Principal and preferred foods were determined for the winter and summer and a pasture study was conducted to measure production and utilization of foods in a typical aspen stand during the summer months. The study in the Southern Black Hills (Part II) was made in 1968 and 1969. Objectives were to determine the principal plants used by mule and white-tailed deer in fall, winter and summer. The utility of the point-analysis technique for measuring rumen contents was evaluated and the technique was applied to rumen contents examined. The studies were supported by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks under Federal Aid Project W-75-R through the South Dakota Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit (South Dakota State University, the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks and the Wildlife Management Institute, cooperating). Special acknowledgement is extended to the personnel of the Wildlife Habitat Project, Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station Rapid City, for their assistance in both studies.     Cancer Among Arab Americans in the Metropolitan Detroit Area

    Detroit is home to one of the largest populations of Arab Americans outside of the Middle East, yet little is known about the cancer distribution in this ethnic group. The authors of this study created an Arab/Chaldean surname list and matched it with the Detroit SEER Registry to identify cancer cases of probable Arabic descent. We then determined proportional incidence ratios (PIR) for specific cancer sites among metropolitan Detroit Arab Americans as compared to non-Arab Whites, and contrasted the results with Middle Eastern data. Arab/Chaldean men had greater proportions of leukemia (29%), multiple myeloma (46%), liver (64%), kidney (33%), and urinary bladder (26%) cancers. Arab/Chaldean women had greater proportions of leukemia (23%), thyroid (57%), and brain (35%) cancers as compared with non-Arab White men and women. The cancers with significantly increased PIRs in the Detroit Arab/Chaldean population also are frequently diagnosed in Middle Eastern countries
