Bivariate Beta-LSTM
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) infers the long term dependency through a cell
state maintained by the input and the forget gate structures, which models a
gate output as a value in [0,1] through a sigmoid function. However, due to the
graduality of the sigmoid function, the sigmoid gate is not flexible in
representing multi-modality or skewness. Besides, the previous models lack
modeling on the correlation between the gates, which would be a new method to
adopt inductive bias for a relationship between previous and current input.
This paper proposes a new gate structure with the bivariate Beta distribution.
The proposed gate structure enables probabilistic modeling on the gates within
the LSTM cell so that the modelers can customize the cell state flow with
priors and distributions. Moreover, we theoretically show the higher upper
bound of the gradient compared to the sigmoid function, and we empirically
observed that the bivariate Beta distribution gate structure provides higher
gradient values in training. We demonstrate the effectiveness of bivariate Beta
gate structure on the sentence classification, image classification, polyphonic
music modeling, and image caption generation.Comment: AAAI 202

Low-voltage-driven soft actuators
Soft actuators based on electroactive polymers (EAPs) are the core constituents of future soft robots owing to their fascinating properties such as Lightweight, compactness, easy fabrication into various forms, and Low cost. Ionic EAP actuators are particularly attractive owing to the Low driving voltages (<3 V) as compared to those of electronic EAP actuators (usually kilovolts). This paper presents a brief overview of the recent progress in a range of EAP actuators by focusing on Low voltage operation, in addition to the challenges and future strategies for their wide applicability in artificial muscles and various innovative soft robot technologies.11Ysciescopu
Outcomes of Palivizumab Prophylaxis for Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection in Preterm Children with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia at a Single Hospital in Korea from 2005 to 2009
This study was performed to evaluate the utilization and outcomes of palivizumab in high risk children born prematurely with chronic lung disease (CLD). A retrospective review of 128 patients was conducted from September 2004 to March 2009 at the Ajou University Hospital. All patients were diagnosed with CLD, were born at ≤35 weeks of gestation, were <2 yr old at the onset of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season, and had received medical therapy within six months prior to the RSV season. Fifty-three patients did not receive palivizumab prophylaxis and 75 patients received at least one dose of palivizumab. There were no statistically significant differences between the patients with and without palivizumab prophylaxis with regard to demographic characteristics and risk factors for RSV infection. There were no systemic adverse responses. Compliance with the course of prophylaxis was 92.2%. Hospitalization associated with RSV occurred in 12 cases (22.6%) in the group without prophylaxis and in three cases (4.0%) with prophylaxis. Palivizumab prophylaxis significantly reduced the frequency of RSV-related hospitalization in preterm children with CLD. This is the first retrospective review of palivizumab prophylaxis in Korea. Palivizumab is effective and well tolerated in high risk prematurely born children
Structural variations of Si 1-xC x and their light absorption controllability
The emergence of third-generation photovoltaics based on Si relies on tunable bandgap materials with embedded nanocrystalline Si. One of the most promising approaches is based on the mixed-phase Si1 -aEuro parts per thousand x C (x) . We have investigated the light absorption controllability of nanocrystalline Si-embedded Si1 -aEuro parts per thousand x C (x) produced by thermal annealing of the Si-rich Si1 -aEuro parts per thousand x C (x) and composition-modulated superlattice structure. In addition, stoichiometric SiC was also investigated to comparatively analyze the characteristic differences. As a result, it was found that stoichiometric changes of the matrix material and incorporation of oxygen play key roles in light absorption controllability. Based on the results of this work and literature, a design strategy of nanocrystalline Si-embedded absorber materials for third-generation photovoltaics is discussed.open3
Spin-wave propagation in the presence of inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions
We theoretically investigate spin-wave propagation through a magnetic metamaterial with spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We establish an effective Schrodinger equation for spin waves and derive boundary conditions for spin waves passing through the boundary between two regions having different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Based on these boundary conditions, we find that the spin wave can be amplified at the boundary and the spin-wave band gap is tunable either by an external magnetic field or the strength of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which offers a spin-wave analog of the field-effect transistor in traditional electronics.112sciescopu
Structure-activity relationships of fluorene compounds inhibiting HCV variants
Approximately 71 million people suffer from hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection worldwide. Persistent HCV infection causes liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, resulting in approximately 400,000 deaths annually. Effective direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) have been developed and are currently used for HCV treatment targeting the following three proteins: NS3/4A proteinase that cleaves the HCV polyprotein into various functional proteins, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (designated as NS5B), and NS5A, which is required for the formation of double membrane vesicles serving as RNA replication organelles. At least one compound inhibiting NS5A is included in current HCV treatment regimens due to the high efficacy and low toxicity of drugs targeting NS5A. Here we report fluorene compounds showing strong inhibitory effects on GT 1b and 3a of HCV. Moreover, some compounds were effective against resistance-associated variants to DAAs. The structure-activity relationships of the compounds were analyzed. Furthermore, we investigated the molecular bases of the inhibitory activities of some compounds by the molecular docking method.11Ysciescopu
