    KCHO-1, a Novel Antineuroinflammatory Agent, Inhibits Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Neuroinflammatory Responses through Nrf2-Mediated Heme Oxygenase-1 Expression in Mouse BV2 Microglia Cells

    The brain is vulnerable to oxidative stress and inflammation that can occur as a result of aging or neurodegenerative diseases. Our work has sought to identify natural products that regulate heme oxygenase (HO)-1 and to determine their mechanism of action in neurodegenerative diseases. KCHO-1 is a novel herbal therapeutic containing 30% ethanol (EtOH) extracts from nine plants. In this study, we investigated the antineuroinflammatory effects of KCHO-1 in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) treated mouse BV2 microglia. KCHO-1 inhibited the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), iNOS-derived nitric oxide (NO), cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 2, and COX-2-derived prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglia. It also reduced tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-6 production. This effect was correlated with the suppression of inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B-α (IκB-α) phosphorylation and degradation and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) translocation and DNA binding. Additionally, KCHO-1 upregulated HO-1 expression by promoting nuclear translocation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in mouse BV2 microglia. Tin protoporphyrin (SnPP), an HO activity inhibitor, was used to verify the inhibitory effects of KCHO-1 on proinflammatory mediators and proteins associated with HO-1 expression. Our data suggest that KCHO-1 has therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative diseases caused by neuroinflammation

    Analysis of Causal Relationships for Nutrient Removal of Activated Sludge Process Based on Structural Equation Modeling Approaches

    The removal process of activated sludge in sewage treatment plants is very nonlinear, and removal performance has a complex causal relationship depending on environmental factors, influent load, and operating factors. In this study, how causal relationships are expressed in collected data was identified by structural equation modeling. First, path modeling was attempted as a preliminary step in structural equation model (SEM) construction and, as a result, the nutrient-removal mechanism could not be sufficiently represented as a direct causal relationship between measured variables. However, as a result of the deduced SEMs for effluent total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T–P) concentrations, accompanied by exploratory factor analysis to extract latent variables, a causal network was formed that describes the direct or indirect effect of the latent factors and measured variables. Hereby, this study suggests that it is possible to construct an SEM explaining the nutrient-removal mechanism of the activated-sludge process with latent variables. Moreover, nonlinear features embedded in the mechanism could be represented by SEM, which is a model based on linearity, by including causal relations and variables that were not derived by path analysis. This attempt to model the direct and indirect causalities of the process could enhance the understanding of the process, and help decision making such as changing the driving conditions that would be required

    We introduce the exam scheduling problem where we wish to schedule exams for thousandsof students over just two weeks. The desire to formulate a model to schedule exams comes fromthe abundance of students, like ourselves, that often complain that the 1nal exams are scheduledtoo close together. We have found out that many students may have multiple exams on thesame day, which can be very stressful for students. There are also extreme circumstances wherestudents are scheduled to have two exams during the same time. Students often cannot performto their best ability when faced with a stressful exam schedule. Therefore, we wish to reduce thestress of students during exam time by maximizing their study time between scheduled examsthrough our model

    Utility of Digital Technologies for the Sustainability of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Korea

    The importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage (ICH) for sustainable development has been widely acknowledged by the international society. Various forms of cooperation have taken place to prevent deterioration and destruction due to its inherent characteristic of ‘intangibleness’. Public engagement, however, has largely been excluded from the system in spite of its significance in safeguarding ICH by inducing people to be trained as successors. In this respect, this paper discusses and emphasises the necessity of public engagement in safeguarding ICH. To this end, it suggests the use of digital technologies to create museum content to encourage public involvement with and learning about ICH. Focusing on ICH in Korea, digital exhibitions on Jultagi and Daemokjang utilising virtual reality technology are proposed. The ultimate aim of this article is to contribute to the sustainability of world ICH for humanity through digital exhibitions

    Fabric Vest Socket with Embroidered Electrodes for Control of Myoelectric Prosthesis

    Myoelectric prostheses assist users to live their daily lives. However, the majority of users are primarily confined to forearm amputees because the surface electromyography (sEMG) that understands the motion intents should be acquired from a residual limb for control of the myoelectric prosthesis. This study proposes a novel fabric vest socket that includes embroidered electrodes suitable for a high-level upper amputee, especially for shoulder disarticulation. The fabric vest socket consists of rigid support and a fabric vest with embroidered electrodes. Several experiments were conducted to verify the practicality of the developed vest socket with embroidered electrodes. The sEMG signals were measured using commercial Ag/AgCl electrodes for a comparison to verify the performance of the embroidered electrodes in terms of signal amplitudes, the skin-electrode impedance, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). These results showed that the embroidered electrodes were as effective as the commercial electrodes. Then, posture classification was carried out by able-bodied subjects for the usability of the developed vest socket. The average classification accuracy for each subject reached 97.92%, and for all the subjects it was 93.2%. In other words, the fabric vest socket with the embroidered electrodes could measure sEMG signals with high accuracy. Therefore, it is expected that it can be readily worn by high-level amputees to control their myoelectric prostheses, as well as it is cost effective for fabrication as compared with the traditional socket

    Generation of Stilbene Glycoside with Promising Cell Rejuvenation Activity through Biotransformation by the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana

    A stilbene glycoside (resvebassianol A) (1) with a unique sugar unit, 4-O-methyl-D-glucopyranose, was identified through biotransformation of resveratrol (RSV) by the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana to obtain a superior RSV metabolite with enhanced safety. Its structure, including its absolute configurations, was determined using spectroscopic data, HRESIMS, and chemical reactions. Microarray analysis showed that the expression levels of filaggrin, HAS2-AS1, and CERS3 were higher, while those of IL23A, IL1A, and CXCL8 were lower in the resvebassianol A-treated group than in the RSV-treated group, as confirmed by qRT-PCR. Compound 1 exhibited the same regenerative and anti-inflammatory effects as RSV with no cytotoxicity in skin keratinocytes and TNF-α/IFN-γ-stimulated HIEC-6 cells, suggesting that compound 1 is a safe and stable methylglycosylated RSV. Our findings suggest that our biotransformation method can be an efficient biosynthetic platform for producing a broad range of natural glycosides with enhanced safety
