    Uncorking the Speaking Skill: Wine and Prosody in Conversation

    Although the skill of speaking is necessary for attaining basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS), most traditional second language acquisition programs base their pedagogy and curriculums on lexis and grammar of the written form and phonology/phonetics. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate how to effectively adapt content-specific material for developing the speaking skill at community colleges with adult students who are interested in pursuing a career in the wine industry as a sommelier. Courses for becoming a sommelier or a server in the wine industry are traditionally offered at community colleges under the culinary arts and hospitality management programs, but not typically in conjunction with ESL department course offerings. A document analysis on tasks in language teaching, the communicative language teaching (CLT) approach, and grammar of the spoken language was conducted in order to identify ways to adapt appropriate materials. This field project was informed by the works of Carter and McCarthy on grammar of the spoken language, corpora of spoken English, and the seminal works of Rebecca Hughes on teaching and researching speaking. It was grounded in the theory and methodology of interactional linguistics, prosody in conversation, the communicative language teaching approach, and by the works of Zoltán Dörnyei and Sarah Thurrell on communication and dialogues in action. This project demonstrates prosody in communication by turning authentic dialogues in action from adapted readings of a sommelier prep course into videos of the dialogues in unscripted real communicative interaction. The videos showed prosody in communication, suggesting that the communicative language teaching (CLT) approach could benefit from this kind of material for developing the speaking skill

    The branching fraction of the rare Bs0ϕμ+μB^0_s\rightarrow\phi\mu^+\mu^- decay is measured using data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2, and 6 fb1^{-1}, respectively. The branching fraction is reported in intervals of q2^2, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. In the q2^2 region between 1.1 and 6.0 GeV2^2/c4^4, the measurement is found to lie 3.6 standard deviations below a standard model prediction based on a combination of light cone sum rule and lattice QCD calculations. In addition, the first observation of the rare Bs0f2(1525)μ+μB^0_s\rightarrow f_2^\prime(1525)\mu^+\mu^- decay is reported with a statistical significance of 9 standard deviations and its branching fraction is determined

    Measurement of the lifetimes of promptly produced Ωc0 and Ξc0 baryons

    International audienceA measurement of the lifetimes of the Ωc0 and Ξc0 baryons is reported using proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb-1 collected by the LHCb experiment. The Ωc0 and Ξc0 baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the pK-K-π+ final state. The Ωc0 lifetime is measured to be 276.5±13.4±4.4±0.7fs, and the Ξc0 lifetime is measured to be 148.0±2.3±2.2±0.2fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the D0 lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter Ωc0 lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the Ωc0 lifetime

    Measurement of J/ψJ/\psi production cross-sections in pppp collisions at s=5\sqrt{s}=5 TeV

    International audienceThe production cross-sections of J/ψJ/\psi mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=5\sqrt{s}=5 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13±0.18 pb19.13\pm0.18~\text{pb}^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_{\text{T}}, and rapidity, yy, and separately for J/ψJ/\psi mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised J/ψJ/\psi mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range 0<pT<20 GeV/c0<p_{\text{T}}<20~\text{GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5 are 8.154±0.010±0.283 μb8.154\pm0.010\pm0.283~\mu\text{b} for prompt J/ψJ/\psi mesons and 0.820±0.003±0.034 μb0.820\pm0.003\pm0.034~\mu\text{b} for nonprompt J/ψJ/\psi mesons, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV and 1313 TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for J/ψJ/\psi mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5 TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions

    International audienceThe first observation of the Ωb-→Ξc+K-π- decay is reported using p p collision data at center of mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb-1. Four excited Ωc0 baryons are observed in the Ξc+ K- mass projection of the Ωb-→Ξc+K-π- decays with the significance of each exceeding five standard deviations. They coincide with the states previously observed in prompt pp and e+e- production. Relative production rates, masses, and natural widths of the states are measured, and a test of spin hypotheses is performed. Moreover, the branching ratio of Ωb-→Ξc+K-π- is measured relative to the Ωb-→Ωc0π- decay mode and a precise measurement of the Ωb- mass of 6044.3±1.2±1.1-0.22+0.19  MeV is obtained

    International audienceThe W boson mass is measured using proton-proton collision data at s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb1^{−1} recorded during 2016 by the LHCb experiment. With a simultaneous fit of the muon q/pT_{T} distribution of a sample of W → μν decays and the ϕ^{*} distribution of a sample of Z → μμ decays the W boson mass is determined to bemw=80354±23stat±10exp±17theory±9PDFMeV, {m}_w=80354\pm {23}_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm {10}_{\mathrm{exp}}\pm {17}_{\mathrm{theory}}\pm {9}_{\mathrm{PDF}}\mathrm{MeV}, where uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical, experimental systematic, theoretical and parton distribution function sources. This is an average of results based on three recent global parton distribution function sets. The measurement agrees well with the prediction of the global electroweak fit and with previous measurements.[graphic not available: see fulltext

    Search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\it{\Xi}_{cc}^{+} in the Ξc+ππ+\it{\Xi}_{c}^{+} \pi^{-} \pi^{+} final state

    A search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+\it{\Xi}_{cc}^{+} is performed in the Ξc+ππ+\it{\Xi}_{c}^{+} \pi^{-} \pi^{+} invariant-mass spectrum, where the Ξc+\it{\Xi}_{c}^{+} baryon is reconstructed in the pKπ+p K^{-} \pi^{+} final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4fb1\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4-3.8GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the Ξcc++(Ξc+pKπ+)π+\it{\Xi}_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\it{\Xi}_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} \pi^{+}) \pi^{+} decay for different Ξcc+\it{\Xi}_{cc}^{+} mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25GeV/c\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the Ξcc+Λc+Kπ+\it{\Xi}_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \it{\Lambda}_{c}^{+} K^{-} \pi^{+} decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620MeV/c2\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5-3.7GeV/c2\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2 mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties
