    (Photo)physical properties of new molecular glasses end-capped with thiophene rings composed of diimide and imine units

    New symmetrical arylene bisimide derivatives formed by using electron-donating-electron-accepting systems were synthesized. They consist of a phthalic diimide or naphthalenediimide core and imine linkages and are end-capped with thiophene, bithiophene, and (ethylenedioxy)thiophene units. Moreover, polymers were obtained from a new diamine, N,N′-bis(5- aminonaphthalenyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-dicarboximide and 2,5- thiophenedicarboxaldehyde or 2,2′-bithiophene-5,5′-dicarboxaldehyde. The prepared azomethine diimides exhibited glass-forming properties. The obtained compounds emitted blue light with the emission maximum at 470 nm. The value of the absorption coefficient was determined as a function of the photon energy using spectroscopic ellipsometry. All compounds are electrochemically active and undergo reversible electrochemical reduction and irreversible oxidation processes as was found in cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) studies. They exhibited a low electrochemically (DPV) calculated energy band gap (Eg) from 1.14 to 1.70 eV. The highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels and Eg were additionally calculated theoretically by density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The photovoltaic properties of two model compounds as the active layer in organic solar cells in the configuration indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-(ethylenedioxy)thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/active layer/Al under an illumination of 1.3 mW/cm2 were studied. The device comprising poly(3-hexylthiophene) with the compound end-capped with bithiophene rings showed the highest value of Voc (above 1 V). The conversion efficiency of the fabricated solar cell was in the range of 0.69-0.90%

    Pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart disease: lessons learnt from the large Turkish Nationwide Registry (THALES)

    Pulmonary hypertension is a group of diseases, including pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart disease (APAH-CHD), characterized by progressive deterioration in pulmonary hemodynamics associated with substantial morbidity and mortality risk. THALES is a national multicenter, prospective observational registry, providing data on patients with APAH-CHD. The study comprised APAH-CHD patients (>3 months of age) with confirmed diagnosis of right heart catheterization or echocardiographic findings. Initial and follow-up data were collected via regular hospital visits. Descriptive statistics are used for definitive purposes. Overall, 1034 patients aged 3 months–79 years (median 11.2 [Q1–Q3: 2.2–24.3] years) with APAH-CHD were enrolled at 61 centers, 50.3% being retrospectively enrolled. Most had either Eisenmenger's syndrome (49.2%) or systemic-to-pulmonary shunts (42.7%). Patients were mostly in functional class I–II at the time of diagnosis (46.6%). Mean 6-min walk distance (6MWD) was 369 ± 120 m. Mean pulmonary arterial pressure was 54.7 ± 22.2 mmHg for the whole group, and was highest in patients with Eisenmenger's syndrome. Targeted therapies were noted in 398 (38.5%) patients (monotherapy in 80.4%). Follow-up data were available in 506 patients. Survival at 140 months was 79% and was associated with baseline 6MWD >440 m ( p  = 0.009), brain natriuretic peptide level 165 m ( p  < 0.0001), brain natriuretic peptide level <300 ng/L ( p  = 0.031), and targeted therapies ( p  = 0.004) were also predictive of survival. THALES is the largest registry dedicated to APAH-CHD to date and provides important contributions on demographics, clinical characteristics, and gaps in disease management

    Haemodynamic characterisation and heart catheterisation complications in children with pulmonary hypertension: Insights from the Global TOPP Registry (tracking outcomes and practice in paediatric pulmonary hypertension)

    Background: The TOPP Registry has been designed to provide epidemiologic, diagnostic, clinical, and outcome data on children with pulmonary hypertension (PH) confirmed by heart catheterisation (HC). This study aims to identify important characteristics of the haemodynamic profile at diagnosis and HC complications of paediatric patients presenting with PH. Methods and results: HC data sets underwent a blinded review for confirmation of PH (defined as mean pulmonary arterial pressure >= 25 mm Hg, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure 3 WU x m(2)). Of 568 patients enrolled, 472 who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and had sufficient data from HC were analysed. A total of 908 diagnostic and follow-up HCs were performed and complications occurred in 5.9% of all HCs including five (0.6%) deaths. General anaesthesia (GA) was used in 53%, and conscious sedation in 47%. Complications at diagnosis were more likely to occur if GA was used (p=0.04) and with higher functional class (p = 0.02). Mean cardiac index (CI) was within normal limits at diagnosis when analysed for the entire group (3.7 L/min/m(2); 95% confidence interval 3.4-4.1), as was right atrial pressure despite a severely increased PVRI (16.6 WU x m(2), 95% confidence interval 15.6-17.76). However, 24% of the patients had a CI of <2.5 L/min/m(2) at diagnosis. A progressive increase in PVRI and decrease in CI was observed with age (p < 0.001). Conclusion: In TOPP, haemodynamic assessment was remarkable for preserved CI in the majority of patients despite severely elevated PVRI.
