Mechanical loading of the gymnast’s motor system during swings on rings
The aim of this work was to identify the mechanical loading of the gymnast’s motor system during forward and backward swings on gymnastic rings. A junior gymnast of the First Class, aged 14, with body mass 53.1 kg and body length 1.61 m, participated in the study. He executed a series of ten cyclic swing movements on rings with his maximum amplitude. Kinematic variables of the gymnast’s centre of mass (COM) as well as reaction forces in the cables were measured and synchronized using the SIMI MOTION movement analysis system. Two separate phases of mechanical loading of the motor system have been identified: resistance phase and non resistance phase. In the non resistance phase the gymnast attains similar values of the COM’s momentum but different angular displacements. In the resistance phase the forces acting on the motor system have their maximum. They amount to 5.5 BW for the forward swing and 6.5 BW for the backward swing movement. The maximum rate of change of the force for forward and backward swing is 42.6 BWs-1 and 67.4 BWs-1, respectively. These two variables differentiate the mechanical loading of the gymnast’s motor system between forward and backward swings. The reaction force produced by the gymnast is significantly greater during the execution of forward swings. It seems probable that horizontal displacements of COM may be the factor responsible for reduction of the mechanical loading experienced by the gymnast
Real-Time Implementation of Non-Linear Physical Models with Modal Synthesis and Performance Analysis
Modal decomposition is a popular analysis approach involving the description of a target system via a bank of resonant oscillators called modes. Early sound synthesis frameworks successfully exploited this idea for the simulation of vibrating objects such as bars, plates and strings. While popular, modal synthesis is often applied to linear systems, since the modes become densely coupled in systems presenting distributed or multiple nonlinearities. In this work, the modal approach is used for the simulation of nonlinearly connected systems. When the nonlinearity is of cubic type, a suitable energy-stable modal update can be derived requiring the solution of a single linear system at each time step. A working plugin written in the C++ programming language is presented. Moreover, the performance of the plugin is analysed considering systems of different dimensions, defining the current limits for a real-time application of these models. The analysis also revealed a linear correlation between the number of modes which compose the systems and the CPU usage necessary for their real-time computation
AN ACTIVE LEARNING PROCEDURE FOR THE INTERAURAL TIME DIFFERENCE DISCRIMINATION THRESHOLD
Measuring the auditory lateralization elicited by interaural time difference (ITD) cues involves the estimation of a psychometric function (PF). The shape of this function usually follows from the analysis of the subjective data and models the probability of correctly localizing the angular position of a sound source. The present study describes and evaluates a procedure for progressively fitting a PF, using Gaussian process classification of the subjective responses produced during a binary decision experiment. The process refines adaptively an approximated PF, following Bayesian inference. At each trial, it suggests the most informative auditory stimulus for function refinement according to Bayesian active learning by disagreement (BALD) mutual information. In this paper, the procedure was modified to accommodate two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) experimental methods and then was compared with a standard adaptive “three-down, one-up” staircase procedure. Our process approximates the average threshold ITD 79.4% correct level of lateralization with a mean accuracy increase of 8.9% over the Weibull function fitted on the data of the same test. The final accuracy for the Just Noticeable Difference (JND) in ITD is achieved with only 37.6% of the trials needed by a standard lateralization test
Heliophysics Event Knowledgebase for the Solar Dynamics Observatory and Beyond
The immense volume of data generated by the suite of instruments on SDO
requires new tools for efficient identifying and accessing data that is most
relevant to research investigations. We have developed the Heliophysics Events
Knowledgebase (HEK) to fill this need. The HEK system combines automated data
mining using feature-detection methods and high-performance visualization
systems for data markup. In addition, web services and clients are provided for
searching the resulting metadata, reviewing results, and efficiently accessing
the data. We review these components and present examples of their use with SDO
data.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
Line nodes in the energy gap of high-temperature superconducting BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 from penetration depth and thermal conductivity measurements
We report magnetic penetration depth and thermal conductivity data for
high-quality single crystals of BaFe(AsP) (\,K)
which provide strong evidence that this material has line nodes in its energy
gap. This is distinctly different from the nodeless gap found for
(Ba,K)FeAs which has similar and phase diagram. Our results
indicate that repulsive electronic interactions play an essential role for
Fe-based high- superconductivity but that uniquely there are distinctly
different pairing states, with and without nodes, which have comparable .Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revised version to be published in Phys. Rev. B

Electroconductive PEDOT nanoparticle integrated scaffolds for spinal cord tissue repair
Background: Hostile environment around the lesion site following spinal cord injury (SCI) prevents the re-establishment of neuronal tracks, thus significantly limiting the regenerative capability. Electroconductive scaffolds are emerging as a promising option for SCI repair, though currently available conductive polymers such as polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) present poor biofunctionality and biocompatibility, thus limiting their effective use in SCI tissue engineering (TE) treatment strategies.
Methods: PEDOT NPs were synthesized via chemical oxidation polymerization in miniemulsion. The conductive PEDOT NPs were incorporated with gelatin and hyaluronic acid (HA) to create gel:HA:PEDOT-NPs scaffolds. Morphological analysis of both PEDOT NPs and scaffolds was conducted via SEM. Further characterisation included dielectric constant and permittivity variances mapped against morphological changes after crosslinking, Young’s modulus, FTIR, DLS, swelling studies, rheology, in-vitro, and in-vivo biocompatibility studies were also conducted.
Results: Incorporation of PEDOT NPs increased the conductivity of scaffolds to 8.3 × 10–4 ± 8.1 × 10–5 S/cm. The compressive modulus of the scaffold was tailored to match the native spinal cord at 1.2 ± 0.2 MPa, along with controlled porosity. Rheological studies of the hydrogel showed excellent 3D shear-thinning printing capabilities and shape fidelity post-printing. In-vitro studies showed the scaffolds are cytocompatible and an in-vivo assessment in a rat SCI lesion model shows glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) upregulation not directly in contact with the lesion/implantation site, with diminished astrocyte reactivity. Decreased levels of macrophage and microglia reactivity at the implant site is also observed. This positively influences the re-establishment of signals and initiation of healing mechanisms. Observation of axon migration towards the scaffold can be attributed to immunomodulatory properties of HA in the scaffold caused by a controlled inflammatory response. HA limits astrocyte activation through its CD44 receptors and therefore limits scar formation. This allows for a superior axonal migration and growth towards the targeted implantation site through the provision of a stimulating microenvironment for regeneration.
Conclusions: Based on these results, the incorporation of PEDOT NPs into Gel:HA biomaterial scaffolds enhances not only the conductive capabilities of the material, but also the provision of a healing environment around lesions in SCI. Hence, gel:HA:PEDOT-NPs scaffolds are a promising TE option for stimulating regeneration for SCI.The authors would like to thank the funding provided by the Irish Research Council through the Irish Research Council Enterprise Partnership Scheme with Johnson and Johnson (EPSPG/2020/78), as well as the Irish Fulbright Commission
The expression of B7-H1 and B7-H4 molecules on immature myeloid and lymphoid dendritic cells in cord blood of healthy neonates.
The aim of our study was to estimate both B7-H1 and B7-H4 molecules on immature myeloid and lymphoid dendritic cells in umbilical cord blood of healthy neonates in comparison with peripheral blood of healthy adults. Thirty nine healthy full-term neonates from physiological single pregnancies and 27 healthy adults were included in the study. The expression of B7-H1 and B7-H4 was revealed using the immunofluorescence method. Statistical analysis was performed using a non-parametric test (Mann-Whitney U-Test). The percentages of BDCA-1+ dendritic cells with B7-H1 and B7-H4 expressions were significantly higher in peripheral blood of healthy adults (

Structure-Activity Relationships in Human Toll-like Receptor 8-Active 2,3-diamino-furo[2,3-c]pyridines
In our ongoing search toward identifying novel and synthetically simpler candidate vaccine adjuvants, we hypothesized that the imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazines, readily accessible via the Groebke-Blackburn-Bienaymé multicomponent reaction, would possess sufficient structural similarity with TLR7/8-agonistic imidazoquinolines. With pyridoxal as the aldehyde component, furo[2,3- c]pyridines, rather than the expected imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines were obtained, which were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and crystallography. Several analogues were found to activate TLR8-dependent NF-κB signaling. In a focused library of furo[2,3-c]pyridines, a distinct SAR was observed with varying substituents at C2. In human PBMCs, none of the furo[2,3-c]pyridines showed any proinflammatory cytokine induction, but upregulated several chemokine ligand genes. In immunization studies in rabbits, the most active compound showed prominent adjuvantic effects. The complete lack of proinflammatory cytokine induction coupled with strong adjuvantic activity of the novel furo[2,3-c]pyridines render this hitherto unknown chemotype an attractive class of compounds which are expected to be devoid of local or systemic reactogenicity
