Evaluation of teleoperation system performance over a cellular network

    Get PDF
The ubiquity of cellular networks has exploded over the last half decade making internet access a given when located in an urban settings. On top of this, new technologies like 4G LTE provide higher transfer speeds than ever, permitting streaming of video and other high bandwidth services. Though cellular networks are not new, few studies have leveraged this particular communications method when studying teleoperations, due to the significant bandwidth restrictions. As a result, this study seeks to understand whether teleoperation could be implemented over regular cellular networks where the bandwidth load that each cell tower is subject to cannot be controlled by the teleoperation system. For this, a prototype system is built using a remote controlled golf cart that hosts a multimedia link between the vehicle and a control station which communicate over the internet. The system is tested by measuring teleoperation for 3 different tasks of varying degrees of complexity. The results reveal that latency can be low enough to optimally control a remote vehicle. Nevertheless, the performance greatly depends on the network conditions that can vary significantly. The results also indicated that in-situ driving outperformed remote operation.M.S

The aim of the present study is to identify the factors associated to purchase of quality-labelled beef. For this purpose a total of 364 surveys were carried out on buyers of beef in three Spanish cities. The sample was divided into three groups of buyers according to the beef purchasing habits with a quality label. A logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the differences between groups. The results show the importance of the production region as a quality aspect. Income level, association of quality-labelled beef with “guarantee and tradition” aspects, purchasing frequency, place of purchase, production systems and lifestyles are all variables that enabled us to establish differences between groups.beef quality, quality label, consumer perception, Demand and Price Analysis,

Does Enhancing Mind Perception Affect Conspiracy Belief?

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a novel mind perception manipulation. Mind perception is currently theorized to be an essential aspect of a number of human social psychological processes. Thus, a successful manipulation would allow for the causal study of those processes. This manipulation was created in an attempt to explore the downstream impact of mind perception on the endorsement of conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are steadily becoming more and more prominent in social discourse. Endorsement of conspiracy theories are beginning to show real world ramifications such as a danger to human health (e.g., in the anti-vaccination movement). A sample of college students (valid N = 53) from a large rural institution in the southeastern United States participated for course credit. These participants completed a mind perception pretest, were randomly assigned to either the manipulation in question (in which participants are asked to consider the ‘mind’ of several targets and write their thoughts about them) or the control condition, and then they completed a posttest. The mixed ANOVA revealed that the interaction term between Time and Condition was not significant. Because the manipulation did not work, other analyses were aborted, in accord with the pre-registration. My Discussion focuses on the procedures and potential shortcomings of this manipulation, in an effort to lay the groundwork for a successful one

Novel Pseudo-Wavelet function for MMG signal extraction during dynamic fatiguing contractions

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to develop an algorithm to classify muscle fatigue content in sports related scenarios. Mechanomyography (MMG) signals of the biceps muscle were recorded from thirteen subjects performing dynamic contractions until fatigue. For training and testing purposes, the signals were labeled in two classes (Non-Fatigue and Fatigue). A genetic algorithm was used to evolve a pseudo-wavelet function for optimizing the detection of muscle fatigue. Tuning of the generalized evolved pseudo-wavelet function was based on the decomposition of 70% of the conducted MMG trials. After completing 25 independent pseudo-wavelet evolution runs, the best run was selected and then tested on the remaining 30% of the data to measure the classification performance. Results show that the evolved pseudo-wavelet improved the classification rate of muscle fatigue by 4.70 percentage points to 16.61 percentage points when compared to other standard wavelet functions, giving an average correct classification of 80.63%, with statistical significance (p < 0.05). © 2014 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

Development and validation of the Accommodation and Enabling Scale for Eating Disorders (AESED) for caregivers in eating disorders

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Families of people with eating disorders are often caught up in rule bound eating and safety behaviours that characterise the illness. The main aim of this study was to develop a valid and specific scale to measure family accommodation in the context of having a relative with an eating disorder.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A new scale, the Accommodation and Enabling Scale for Eating Disorders (AESED), was jointly generated by professionals and expert carers through qualitative analysis. In the first stage, this instrument was given to 201 family members of relatives diagnosed with an eating disorder, with additional self-report measures including the Experience of Caregiving Inventory (ECI), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Family Questionnaire (FQ). In the second stage, the sensitivity of the AESED to change was tested in a pre-and-post design study with a new sample of 116 caregivers, using a DVDs-distance skills training for caregivers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A 33 item instrument was derived consisting of five factors: Avoidance and Modifying Routine, Reassurance Seeking, Meal Ritual, Control of Family and Turning a Blind Eye, which together explained 60.1% of the variance. This scale had good psychometric properties in terms of Cronbach's alpha which ranged from 0.77 to 0.92. Regarding the convergent validity, most of the AESED subscales was moderately supported by correlations with anxiety (HADS; r = 0.24 to 0.48) and depression levels (HADS; r = 0.17 to 0.47), negative caregiving (ECI; r = 0.18 to 0.45), and expressed emotion levels (FQ; r = 0.17 to 0.51). Pre-post intervention assessments showed that the overall AESED scale (<it>d </it>= 0.38) and the avoidance and modifying routine (<it>d </it>= 0.52), meal ritual (<it>d </it>= 0.27) and control of the family (<it>d </it>= 0.49) subscales were sensitive to change.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Internal consistency was good and initial validity of the scale was adequate, it was able to discriminate differences between clinical variables, however, further work is needed to confirm the factor structure and validity of the AESED. Nevertheless, this scale may be of value in exploring and helping to improve carers' coping strategies and in examining the effectiveness of family based interventions.</p

Implementing an Endocarditis Interdisciplinary Pathway in a Large Academic Medical Center: A Quality Improvement Project

Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection and or inflammation of the heart valves and endocardium and a potentially life threatening illness. Dependent on the infecting organism, the cardiac damage caused by IE can be indolent or very aggressive. Hospitalized patients with IE require management by an interdisciplinary team, including cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, infectious disease specialists, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and social workers. Treatment is complex and patients often present with various comorbidities. Standardized interdisciplinary care protocols have been shown to reduce patient mortality and hospital length of stay. The development of the pathway guidelines was informed by stakeholder meetings and recommendations from the American Heart Association, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and European Society of Cardiology. One IE-related pathway was published in the institution’s intranet with two subsections: IE Diagnosis and IE Management and Discharge Processes. Education sessions on pathway access were conducted for interdisciplinary staff across three cardiac care units. The frequency of pathway online views was measured over three months, accumulating a total of 191 views. The median number of daily views was 2.5 [IQR 2, 4]. Analysis of these initial measures will help guide future efforts to streamline and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration amongst staff that care for patients with IE

Monitoring and evaluating business mentoring: towards a research and evaluation toolkit to measure impact

    Get PDF
This paper presents a Research and Evaluation Toolkit (RET) which has applicability to mentoring programmes in all sectors and organizational contexts. The RET offers a practical guide for human resource development practitioners engaged in evaluation of learning and development programmes and more specifically, mentoring. The RET was a key outcome of a global 2.5-year impact evaluation project with Youth Business International and Middlesex University Business School, evaluating the impact of volunteer business mentoring on under-served young entrepreneurs and their business ventures. This paper brings to the forefront the importance of integrating a measurement and evaluation strategy from the initial mentoring programme design phase and ongoing management. Despite the growing number of survey reports and studies that highlight the importance of this aspect of mentoring programme design and management, measurement and evaluation continues to be one of the most challenging areas. As such, this paper contributes to our understanding concerning the role and effectiveness of ongoing monitoring and evaluation in relation to demonstrating the impact of human resource development interventions and provides a practical approach for practitioners to develop and enhance their evaluation strategy and methods.
