Differentiation and Regenerative Capacities of Human Odontoma-Derived Mesenchymal Cells
Regenerating human tooth ex vivo and biological repair of dental caries are hampered by non-viable odontogenic stem cells that can regenerate different tooth components. Odontoma is a developmental dental anomaly that may contain putative post-natal stem cells with the ability to differentiate and regenerate in vivo new dental structures that may include enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp tissues. We evaluated odontoma tissues from 14 patients and further isolated and characterized human odontoma-derived mesenchymal cells (HODCs) with neural stem cell and hard tissue regenerative properties from a group of complex odontoma from 1 of 14 patients. Complex odontoma was more common (9 of 14) than compound type and females (9 of 14) were more affected than males in our set of patients. HODCs were highly proliferative like dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) but demonstrated stronger neural immunophenotype than both DPSCs and mandible bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) by expressing higher levels of nestin, Sox 2 and ÎČIII-tubulin. When transplanted with hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate into immunocompromised mice, HODCs differentiated and regenerated calcified hard tissues in vivo that were morphologically and quantitatively comparable to those generated by DPSCs and BMSCs. When transplanted with polycaprolactone (biodegradable carrier), HODCs differentiated to form new predentin on the surface of a dentin platform. Newly formed predentin contained numerous distinct dentinal tubules and an apparent dentin-pulp arrangement. HODCs represent unique odontogenic progenitors that readily commit to formation of dental hard tissues
Design and realization of a smart battery management system
Battery management system (BMS) emerges a decisive system component in battery-powered applications, such as (hybrid) electric vehicles and portable devices. However, due to the inaccurate parameter estimation of aged battery cells and multi-cell batteries, current BMSs cannot control batteries optimally, and therefore affect the usability of products. In this paper, we proposed a smart management system for multi-cell batteries, and discussed the development of our research study in three directions: i) improving the effectiveness of battery monitoring and current sensing, ii) modeling the battery aging process, and iii) designing a self-healing circuit system to compensate performance variations due to aging and other variations.published_or_final_versio
A step towards testing general relativity using weak gravitational lensing and redshift surveys
Using the linear theory of perturbations in General Relativity, we express a
set of consistency relations that can be observationally tested with current
and future large scale structure surveys. We then outline a stringent
model-independent program to test gravity on cosmological scales. We illustrate
the feasibility of such a program by jointly using several observables like
peculiar velocities, galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing. After
addressing possible observational or astrophysical caveats like galaxy bias and
redshift uncertainties, we forecast in particular how well one can predict the
lensing signal from a cosmic shear survey using an over-lapping galaxy survey.
We finally discuss the specific physics probed this way and illustrate how

Statistical Determination of Bulk Flow Motions
We present here a new parameterization for the bulk motions of galaxies and
clusters (in the linear regime) that can be measured statistically from the
shape and amplitude of the two-dimensional two-point correlation function. We
further propose the one-dimensional velocity dispersion (v_p) of the bulk flow
as a complementary measure of redshift-space distortions, which is
model-independent and not dependent on the normalisation method. As a
demonstration, we have applied our new methodology to the C4 cluster catalogue
constructed from Data Release Three (DR3) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We
find v_p=270^{+433}km/s (also consistent with v_p=0) for this cluster sample
(at z=0.1), which is in agreement with that predicted for a WMAP5-normalised
LCDM model (i.e., v_p(LCDM=203km/s). This measurement does not lend support to
recent claims of excessive bulk motions (\simeq1000 km/s) which appear in
conflict with LCDM, although our large statistical error cannot rule them out.
From the measured coherent evolution of v_p, we develop a technique to
re-construct the perturbed potential, as well as estimating the unbiased matter
density fluctuations and scale--independent bias.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Regulation of inflammatory responses by IL-17F
Although interleukin (IL) 17 has been extensively characterized, the function of IL-17F, which has an expression pattern regulated similarly to IL-17, is poorly understood. We show that like IL-17, IL-17F regulates proinflammatory gene expression in vitro, and this requires IL-17 receptor A, tumor necrosis factor receptorâassociated factor 6, and Act1. In vivo, overexpression of IL-17F in lung epithelium led to infiltration of lymphocytes and macrophages and mucus hyperplasia, similar to observations made in IL-17 transgenic mice. To further understand the function of IL-17F, we generated and analyzed mice deficient in IL-17F or IL-17. IL-17, but not IL-17F, was required for the initiation of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. Mice deficient in IL-17F, but not IL-17, had defective airway neutrophilia in response to allergen challenge. Moreover, in an asthma model, although IL-17 deficiency reduced T helper type 2 responses, IL-17Fâdeficient mice displayed enhanced type 2 cytokine production and eosinophil function. In addition, IL-17F deficiency resulted in reduced colitis caused by dextran sulfate sodium, whereas IL-17 knockout mice developed more severe disease. Our results thus demonstrate that IL-17F is an important regulator of inflammatory responses that seems to function differently than IL-17 in immune responses and diseases

Conformal invariance of curvature perturbation
We show that in the single component situation all perturbation variables in
the comoving gauge are conformally invariant to all perturbation orders.
Generally we identify a special time slicing, the uniform-conformal
transformation slicing, where all perturbations are again conformally invariant
to all perturbation orders. We apply this result to the delta N formalism, and

First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays
We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is
a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a
pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6
BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider.
For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0
(stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of
A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the

Study of the decays B->D_s1(2536)+ anti-D(*)
We report a study of the decays B -> D_s1(2536)+ anti-D(*), where anti-D(*)
is anti-D0, D- or D*-, using a sample of 657 x 10^6 B anti-B pairs collected at
the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy
e+e- collider. The branching fractions of the decays B+ -> D_s1(2536)+ anti-D0,
B0 -> D_s1(2536)+ D- and B0 -> D_s1(2536)+ D*- multiplied by that of
D_s1(2536)+ -> (D*0K+ + D*+K0) are found to be (3.97+-0.85+-0.56) x 10^-4,

Search for CP Violation in D Meson Decays to phi pi+
We search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed charged D meson decays by
measuring the difference between the CP violating asymmetries for the
Cabibbo-suppressed decays D+ -> K+K-pi+ and the Cabibbo-favored decays Ds ->
K+K-pi+ in the K+K- mass region of the phi resonance. Using 955/fb of data
collected with the Belle detector we obtain A_CP(D+ -> phi pi+) = (+0.51 +-
0.28 +- 0.05)%. The measurement improves the sensitivity of previous searches
by more than a factor of five. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.Comment: submitted to PR
