    Differentiable Display Photometric Stereo

    Photometric stereo leverages variations in illumination conditions to reconstruct per-pixel surface normals. The concept of display photometric stereo, which employs a conventional monitor as an illumination source, has the potential to overcome limitations often encountered in bulky and difficult-to-use conventional setups. In this paper, we introduce Differentiable Display Photometric Stereo (DDPS), a method designed to achieve high-fidelity normal reconstruction using an off-the-shelf monitor and camera. DDPS addresses a critical yet often neglected challenge in photometric stereo: the optimization of display patterns for enhanced normal reconstruction. We present a differentiable framework that couples basis-illumination image formation with a photometric-stereo reconstruction method. This facilitates the learning of display patterns that leads to high-quality normal reconstruction through automatic differentiation. Addressing the synthetic-real domain gap inherent in end-to-end optimization, we propose the use of a real-world photometric-stereo training dataset composed of 3D-printed objects. Moreover, to reduce the ill-posed nature of photometric stereo, we exploit the linearly polarized light emitted from the monitor to optically separate diffuse and specular reflections in the captured images. We demonstrate that DDPS allows for learning display patterns optimized for a target configuration and is robust to initialization. We assess DDPS on 3D-printed objects with ground-truth normals and diverse real-world objects, validating that DDPS enables effective photometric-stereo reconstruction

    AVQS: Attack Route-Based Vulnerability Quantification Scheme for Smart Grid

    A smart grid is a large, consolidated electrical grid system that includes heterogeneous networks and systems. Based on the data, a smart grid system has a potential security threat in its network connectivity. To solve this problem, we develop and apply a novel scheme to measure the vulnerability in a smart grid domain. Vulnerability quantification can be the first step in security analysis because it can help prioritize the security problems. However, existing vulnerability quantification schemes are not suitable for smart grid because they do not consider network vulnerabilities. We propose a novel attack route-based vulnerability quantification scheme using a network vulnerability score and an end-to-end security score, depending on the specific smart grid network environment to calculate the vulnerability score for a particular attack route. To evaluate the proposed approach, we derive several attack scenarios from the advanced metering infrastructure domain. The experimental results of the proposed approach and the existing common vulnerability scoring system clearly show that we need to consider network connectivity for more optimized vulnerability quantification

    A simple and efficient numerical method for the Allen–Cahn equation on effective symmetric triangular meshes

    In this paper, we propose a novel, simple, efficient, and explicit numerical method for the Allen–Cahn (AC) equation on effective symmetric triangular meshes. First, we compute the net vector of all vectors starting from each node point to its one-ring neighbor vertices and virtually adjust the neighbor vertices so that the net vector is zero. Then, we define the values at the virtually adjusted nodes using linear and quadratic interpolations. Finally, we define a discrete Laplace operator on triangular meshes. We perform several computational experiments to demonstrate the performance of the proposed numerical method for the Laplace operator, the diffusion equation, and the AC equation on triangular meshes

    A secure SNP panel scheme using homomorphically encrypted K-mers without SNP calling on the user side

    Background Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) in the genome has become crucial information for clinical use. For example, the targeted cancer therapy is primarily based on the information which clinically important SNPs are detectable from the tumor. Many hospitals have developed their own panels that include clinically important SNPs. The genome information exchange between the patient and the hospital has become more popular. However, the genome sequence information is innate and irreversible and thus its leakage has serious consequences. Therefore, protecting ones genome information is critical. On the other side, hospitals may need to protect their own panels. There is no known secure SNP panel scheme to protect both. Results In this paper, we propose a secure SNP panel scheme using homomorphically encrypted K-mers without requiring SNP calling on the user side and without revealing the panel information to the user. Use of the powerful homomorphic encryption technique is desirable, but there is no known algorithm to efficiently align two homomorphically encrypted sequences. Thus, we designed and implemented a novel secure SNP panel scheme utilizing the computationally feasible equality test on two homomorphically encrypted K-mers. To make the scheme work correctly, in addition to SNPs in the panel, sequence variations at the population level should be addressed. We designed a concept of Point Deviation Tolerance (PDT) level to address the false positives and false negatives. Using the TCGA BRCA dataset, we demonstrated that our scheme works at the level of over a hundred thousand somatic mutations. In addition, we provide a computational guideline for the panel design, including the size of K-mer and the number of SNPs. Conclusions The proposed method is the first of its kind to protect both the users sequence and the hospitals panel information using the powerful homomorphic encryption scheme. We demonstrated that the scheme works with a simulated dataset and the TCGA BRCA dataset.     Hippocampal glucose uptake as a surrogate of metabolic change of microglia in Alzheimers disease

    Abstract Background Dynamically altered microglia play an important role in the progression of Alzheimers disease (AD). Here, we found a close association of the metabolic reconfiguration of microglia with increased hippocampal glucose uptake on [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET. Methods We used an AD animal model, 5xFAD, to analyze hippocampal glucose metabolism using both animal FDG PET and ex vivo FDG uptake test. Cells of the hippocampus were isolated to perform single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq). The molecular features of cells associated with glucose metabolism were analyzed at a single-cell level. In order to apply our findings to human brain imaging study, brain FDG PET data obtained from the Alzheimers Disease Neuroimaging Initiative were analyzed. FDG uptake in the hippocampus was compared according to the diagnosis, AD, mild cognitive impairment, and controls. The correlation analysis between hippocampal FDG uptake and soluble TREM2 in cerebrospinal fluid was performed. Results In the animal study, 8- and 12-month-old 5xFAD mice showed higher FDG uptake in the hippocampus than wild-type mice. Cellular FDG uptake tests showed that FDG activity in hippocampal microglia was increased in the AD model, while FDG activity in non-microglial cells of the hippocampus was not different between the AD model and wild-type. scRNA-seq data showed that changes in glucose metabolism signatures including glucose transporters, glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation, mainly occurred in microglia. A subset of microglia with higher glucose transporters with defective glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation was increased according to disease progression. In the human imaging study, we found a positive association between soluble TREM2 and hippocampal FDG uptake. FDG uptake in the hippocampus at the baseline scan predicted mild cognitive impairment conversion to AD. Conclusions We identified the reconfiguration of microglial glucose metabolism in the hippocampus of AD, which could be evaluated by FDG PET as a feasible surrogate imaging biomarker for microglia-mediated inflammation

    Interpretation: By quantifying levels and trends in exposures to risk factors and the resulting disease burden, this assessment offers insight into where past policy and programme efforts might have been successful and highlights current priorities for public health action. Decreases in behavioural, environmental, and occupational risks have largely offset the effects of population growth and ageing, in relation to trends in absolute burden. Conversely, the combination of increasing metabolic risks and population ageing will probably continue to drive the increasing trends in non-communicable diseases at the global level, which presents both a public health challenge and opportunity. We see considerable spatiotemporal heterogeneity in levels of risk exposure and risk-attributable burden. Although levels of development underlie some of this heterogeneity, O/E ratios show risks for which countries are overperforming or underperforming relative to their level of development. As such, these ratios provide a benchmarking tool to help to focus local decision making. Our findings reinforce the importance of both risk exposure monitoring and epidemiological research to assess causal connections between risks and health outcomes, and they highlight the usefulness of the GBD study in synthesising data to draw comprehensive and robust conclusions that help to inform good policy and strategic health planning

    Constraint Satisfaction for Motion Feasibility Checking

    Task and motion planning (TAMP) is a key research field for robotic manipulation tasks. The goal of TAMP is to generate motion-feasible task plan automatically. Existing methods for checking motion feasibility of task plan skeletons have some limitations of semantic-free pose candidate sampling, weak search heuristics, and early value commitment. In order to overcome these limitations, we propose a novel constraint satisfaction framework for checking motion feasibility of task plan skeletons. Our framework provides (1) a semantic pose candidate sampling method, (2) novel variable and constraint ordering heuristics based on intra- and inter-action dependencies in a task plan skeleton, and (3) an efficient search strategy using constraint propagation. Based upon these techniques, our framework can improve the efficiency of motion feasibility checking for TAMP. From experiments using the humanoid robot PR2, we show that the motion feasibility checking in our framework is 1.4x to 6.0x faster than previous ones

    A Robotic Context Query-Processing Framework Based on Spatio-Temporal Context Ontology

    Service robots operating in indoor environments should recognize dynamic changes from sensors, such as RGB-depth (RGB-D) cameras, and recall the past context. Therefore, we propose a context query-processing framework, comprising spatio-temporal robotic context query language (ST-RCQL) and a spatio-temporal robotic context query-processing system (ST-RCQP), for service robots. We designed them based on spatio-temporal context ontology. ST-RCQL can query not only the current context knowledge, but also the past. In addition, ST-RCQL includes a variety of time operators and time constants; thus, queries can be written very efficiently. The ST-RCQP is a query-processing system equipped with a perception handler, working memory, and backward reasoner for real-time query-processing. Moreover, ST-RCQP accelerates query-processing speed by building a spatio-temporal index in the working memory, where percepts are stored. Through various qualitative and quantitative experiments, we demonstrate the high efficiency and performance of the proposed context query-processing framework
