Towards integrating culture into the Arabic curriculum : Arabic teachers’ beliefs on the teaching of culture
This study examines Arabic teachers’ beliefs on their teaching of culture to learners of Arabic - specifically at the first and second year Arabic levels - at U.S. universities. The study aims at identifying patterns in teachers’ beliefs and practices on cultural instruction, and describing the goals of their teaching and the approaches they used to attain those goals. I collected data from 57 college-level teachers of Arabic using focus-group interviews, online survey questionnaire and follow-up interviews. Broadly speaking, study participants are well aware of the significance of cultural instruction in a language classroom, and they believe that teaching culture is as important as teaching the other four language skills and grammar. They also believe that culture should be an integral part of language teaching, and cultural competence should be developed using both Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Arabic, with the perception that culture cannot be taught appropriately without teaching dialects. With regard to the participants’ actual practices, only approximately half of them believe that the teaching of culture within their classes is adequate overall, while the other half of them are not satisfied with their overall performance related to cultural instruction. Another finding is that there are, by and large, no significant differences between native and non-native speakers of Arabic in their beliefs and practices on the teaching of culture. There are minor differences in that the native speaking teachers have slightly more positive attitudes towards the teaching of culture and are slightly more satisfied with their cultural instruction and teaching environment for teaching culture. A considerable number of participants indicated that their beliefs on the teaching of culture have changed in the course of their teaching careers, and these changes have been reflected in their practices in the classroom. They reported that the most prominent change in their beliefs is the incorporation of dialects and cultural components into their curricula and lesson plans. This study suggests that in order to effectively incorporate culture into the Arabic language curriculum, several developments still need to be made, such as setting up clear objectives of cultural instruction, developing assessment tools and criteria for cultural competence, and offering teacher education programs. In particular, one of the most important implications of this study is that teacher education programs will help teachers become more actively engaged in cultural instruction by enhancing their awareness of cultural and intercultural education and helping them develop their actual classroom practices.Middle Eastern Studie
Modulation of A375 human melanoma cell proliferation and apoptosis by nitric oxide
The present study aimed to assess the effect of NO• on melanoma A375 cell growth and apoptotic cell death. Trypan blue exclusion assay was employed to detect the cytotoxicity induced by controlled steady-state concentrations (given in µM • min) of NO•. The characteristics of the cellular cell cycle and apoptosis in NO•-treated A375 cells were also analyzed by Annexin V/PI and DNA fragmentation assays. Western blotting was applied to detect the expression of apoptosis-related proteins (p53, Bax, Fas, DR5, caspase-3 and -9, and PARP). When exposed to preformed 100% NO• for 8 h reactor system, a cumulative dose of 3360 μM • min reduced the viability by 22% 24 h after treatment and promoted apoptosis, 2.9- and 12.2-folds 24 and 48 h after treatment higher than the argon control, respectively. Cell cycle analysis 48 h after treatment revealed S-phase arrest in cells treated with 3360 μM • min NO•. It was also observed that the expression of p53, DR5, caspase 9 and PARP increased significantly upon NO• treatment. In addition, the present study assessed the inhibitory effects of endogenous NO• on the proliferation of human melanoma cells by employing specific (AMG, 1400W and/or SMTC) and nonspecific (NMA) NO• synthase (NOS) inhibitors resulting in melanoma cell growth inhibition; the highest cytotoxic effect was seen when inducible NOS inhibition by 1 mM 1400W treatment. Collectively, the present data suggest that NO• is involved in a key mechanism limiting melanoma proliferation and apoptosis, which may play in improving the efficacy of melanoma treatment
Performance Comparison of CRUD Operations in IoT based Big Data Computing
Nowadays, due to the development of mobile devices, the kinds of data that are generated are becoming diverse, and the amount is becoming huge. The vast amount of data generated in this way is called big data. Big data must be processed in a different way than existing data processing methods. Representative methods of big data processing are RDBMS (Relational Database System) and NoSQL method. We compare NoSQL and RDBMS, which are representative database systems. In this paper, we use MySQL query and MongoDB query to compare RDBMS and NoSQL. We gradually compare the performance of CRUD operations in MySQL and MongoDB by increasing the amount of data. MongoDB sets index and compares it again. Through result of these operations is to choose a database system that fits the situation. This makes it possible to design and analyse big data more efficiently.
Identification of the optimal hiit protocol for fatigue resistance in adolescent athletes: a randomized controlled trial
The combat sports athletes developed great gains in both muscular function and fatigue resistance by utilizing high-intensity interval training (HIIT). However, it has not been investigated fully whether different work-to-rest ratios of HIIT show the effectiveness on muscle function in adolescent athletes. The purpose of the study was to compare different work-to-rest ratios by applying different rest times in response to the identical work time during HIIT on muscle function in adolescent taekwondo athletes. Forty-seven adolescent male taekwondo athletes (mean age: 16.7±0.8 years) were randomly assigned to the control group (n=11) vs. three HIIT groups by work-to-rest ratios; (1) 1:2 [30s:60s] (n=12), (2) 1:4 [30s:120s] (n=12), and (3) 1:8 [30s:240s] (n=12). All groups completed 10 experimental sessions over four weeks, while the control group maintained their regular taekwondo training. Muscular functions were measured by assessing isokinetic muscle strength and endurance of the knee extensor and flexor. The participants performed three sets of twenty maximal extension and flexion contractions at 120°s-1 with a 1-min interval between the sets for fatigue resistance. Blood samples were collected to measure free-testosterone, cortisol, creatine kinase, and urea as stress-to-recovery indicators. A positive effect on improving muscle fatigue resistance was observed at the first set of assessments in the HIIT with 1:4 (Δ10.2%, p<.05) and 1:8 groups (Δ8.6%, p<.05). Additionally, the 1:4 group exhibited fatigue resistance improvement in the second set (Δ7.7%, p<.01) without any changes of stress-to-recovery indicators, while the other groups did not show any improvement. The 30s all-out work with 120s rest time, lasting over a brief 4-week period, improved participants’ fatigue resistance. A certain amount of rest time between high-intense movements is required to optimize muscle development in adolescent athletes compared with insufficient rest time
Comparison of Wearable Trackers’ Ability to Estimate Sleep
Tracking physical activity and sleep patterns using wearable trackers has become a current trend. However, little information exists about the comparability of wearable trackers measuring sleep. This study examined the comparability of wearable trackers for estimating sleep measurement with a sleep diary (SD) for three full nights. A convenience sample of 78 adults were recruited in this research with a mean age of 27.6... 11.0 years. Comparisons between wearable trackers and sleep outcomes were analyzed using the mean absolute percentage errors, Pearson correlations, Bland–Altman Plots, and equivalent testing. Trackers that showed the greatest equivalence with the SD for total sleep time were the Jawbone UP3 and Fitbit Charge Heart Rate (effect size = 0.09 and 0.23, respectively). The greatest equivalence with the SD for time in bed was seen with the SenseWear Armband, Garmin Vivosmart, and Jawbone UP3 (effect size = 0.09, 0.16, and 0.07, respectively). Some of the wearable trackers resulted in closer approximations to self-reported sleep outcomes than a previously sleep research-grade device, these trackers offer a lower-cost alternative to tracking sleep in healthy populations
Bisphosphonates and risk of atrial fibrillation: a meta-analysis
Abstract
Introduction
Bisphosphonates are the most commonly used drugs for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Although a recent FDA review of the results of clinical trials reported no clear link between bisphosphonates and serious or non-serious atrial fibrillation (AF), some epidemiologic studies have suggested an association between AF and bisphosphonates.
Methods
We conducted a meta-analysis of non-experimental studies to evaluate the risk of AF associated with bisphosphonates. Studies were identified by searching MEDLINE and EMBASE using a combination of the Medical Subject Headings and keywords. Our search was limited to English language articles. The pooled estimates of odds ratios (OR) as a measure of effect size were calculated using a random effects model.
Results
Seven eligible studies with 266,761 patients were identified: three cohort, three case-control, and one self-controlled case series. Bisphosphonate exposure was not associated with an increased risk of AF [pooled multivariate OR 1.04, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.92-1.16] after adjusting for known risk factors. Moderate heterogeneity was noted (I-squared score = 62.8%). Stratified analyses by study design, cohort versus case-control studies, yielded similar results. Egger's and Begg's tests did not suggest an evidence of publication bias (P = 0.90, 1.00 respectively). No clear asymmetry was observed in the funnel plot analysis. Few studies compared risk between bisphosphonates or by dosing.
Conclusions
Our study did not find an association between bisphosphonate exposure and AF. This finding is consistent with the FDA's statement
Tau functions as Widom constants
We define a tau function for a generic Riemann-Hilbert problem posed on a
union of non-intersecting smooth closed curves with jump matrices analytic in
their neighborhood. The tau function depends on parameters of the jumps and is
expressed as the Fredholm determinant of an integral operator with block
integrable kernel constructed in terms of elementary parametrices. Its
logarithmic derivatives with respect to parameters are given by contour
integrals involving these parametrices and the solution of the Riemann-Hilbert
problem. In the case of one circle, the tau function coincides with Widom's
determinant arising in the asymptotics of block Toeplitz matrices. Our
construction gives the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function for Riemann-Hilbert
problems of isomonodromic origin (Painlev\'e VI, V, III, Garnier system, etc)
and the Sato-Segal-Wilson tau function for integrable hierarchies such as

A Distributed ADMM Approach to Non-Myopic Path Planning for Multi-Target Tracking
This paper investigates non-myopic path planning of mobile sensors for
multi-target tracking. Such problem has posed a high computational complexity
issue and/or the necessity of high-level decision making. Existing works tackle
these issues by heuristically assigning targets to each sensing agent and
solving the split problem for each agent. However, such heuristic methods
reduce the target estimation performance in the absence of considering the
changes of target state estimation along time. In this work, we detour the
task-assignment problem by reformulating the general non-myopic planning
problem to a distributed optimization problem with respect to targets. By
combining alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and local
trajectory optimization method, we solve the problem and induce consensus
(i.e., high-level decisions) automatically among the targets. In addition, we
propose a modified receding-horizon control (RHC) scheme and edge-cutting
method for efficient real-time operation. The proposed algorithm is validated
