    Modeling Pitch Trajectories in Fastpitch Softball

    The fourth-order Runge–Kutta method is used to numerically integrate the equations of motion for a fastpitch softball pitch and to create a model from which the trajectories of drop balls, rise balls and curve balls can be computed and displayed. By requiring these pitches to pass through the strike zone, and by assuming specific values for the initial speed, launch angle and height of each pitch, an upper limit on the lift coefficient can be predicted which agrees with experimental data. This approach also predicts the launch angles necessary to put rise balls, drop balls and curve balls in the strike zone, as well as a value of the drag coefficient that agrees with experimental data. Finally, Adair’s analysis of a batter’s swing is used to compare pitches that look similar to a batter starting her swing, yet which diverge before reaching the home plate, to predict when she is likely to miss or foul the ball

    The circular twin paradox and Thomas Precession are presented in a way that makes both accessible to students in introductory relativity courses. Both are discussed by examining what happens during travel around a polygon and then in the limit as the polygon tends to a circle. Since relativistic predictions based on these examples can be verified in experiments with macroscopic objects such as atomic clocks and the gyroscopes on Gravity Probe B, they are particularly convincing to introductory students.Comment: Accepted by the American Journal of Physics This version includes revision

    Three-body description of direct nuclear reactions: Comparison with the continuum discretized coupled channels method

    The continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) method is compared to the exact solution of the three-body Faddeev equations in momentum space. We present results for: i) elastic and breakup observables of d-12C at E_d=56 MeV, ii) elastic scattering of d-58Ni at E_d=80 MeV, and iii) elastic, breakup and transfer observables for 11Be+p at E_{11Be}/A=38.4 MeV. Our comparative studies show that, in the first two cases, the CDCC method is a good approximation to the full three-body Faddeev solution, but for the 11Be exotic nucleus, depending on the observable or the kinematic regime, it may miss out some of the dynamic three-body effects that appear through the explicit coupling to the transfer channel.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    The key component of this concept is a coiled tube of silicon nitride which acts as a heat exchanger appears to be ideal from the standpoint of utilizing structural ceramics at around 2500 F under severe thermal shock conditions. However the size and configuration of this coil are beyond the state of the art for fabricating such materials as silicon nitride and carbide. A two-task program to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of extruding and forming a section of thin walled silicon nitride tubing was undertaken as an addition to the original program.     The Angiogenic Potential Of PH-neutral Borophosphate Bioactive Glasses

    Borate bioactive glasses have gained attention in recent years due to their therapeutic and regenerative effects in vivo. However, borate bioactive glasses release alkaline ions, increasing the local pH and creating a toxic environment for cell culture studies. A partial compositional substitution of phosphate for borate can create a pH-neutral glass that does not significantly affect the local pH while still releasing therapeutic ions. In the present study, a series of Na-Ca-borophosphate bioactive glasses with different borate-to-phosphate ratios was evaluated in vitro and in vivo for cytotoxicity and angiogenic effects. Compared to more basic borate glasses, the pH-neutral glasses supported endothelial cell migration and stimulated greater blood vessel formation in a chick chorioallantoic membrane model. The results from this study indicate that these pH-neutral glasses are promising angiogenic biomaterials for use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

    Microaggressions and depressive symptoms in sexual minority youth:The roles of rumination and social support.

    Mental health disparities between sexual minority and heterosexual youth are often explained by discriminatory experiences and rejection. Although many studies focus on explicit victimization, the consequences of subtle, everyday discriminations (“microaggressions”) against sexual minority youth are unknown. With an online study among 267 Dutch sexual minority youth (ages 16–22 years) we investigated indirect associations between sexual orientation microaggression experiences and depressive symptoms through rumination and whether these could be buffered by sexuality-specific support. Microaggression experiences were indirectly related to depressive symptoms, through rumination. We found no buffering effects of support. Findings call for awareness of the potentially negative impact of subtle discriminatory experiences, in addition to explicit discrimination, and the negative mental health outcomes that may develop as a result of ruminative emotion regulation

    We study the effect of noncommutativity of space on the physics of a quantum interferometer located in a rotating disk in a gauge field background. To this end, we develop a path-integral approach which allows defining an effective action from which relevant physical quantities can be computed as in the usual commutative case. For the specific case of a constant magnetic field, we are able to compute, exactly, the noncommutative Lagrangian and the associated shift on the interference pattern for any value of Ξ\theta.Comment: 17 pages, presentation improved, references added.     Transplantation of Autologous Adipose Stem Cells Lacks Therapeutic Efficacy in the Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis Model

    Multiple sclerosis (MS), characterized by chronic inflammation, demyelination, and axonal damage, is a complicated neurological disease of the human central nervous system. Recent interest in adipose stromal/stem cell (ASCs) for the treatment of CNS diseases has promoted further investigation in order to identify the most suitable ASCs. To investigate whether MS affects the biologic properties of ASCs and whether autologous ASCs from MS-affected sources could serve as an effective source for stem cell therapy, cells were isolated from subcutaneous inguinal fat pads of mice with established experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a murine model of MS. ASCs from EAE mice and their syngeneic wildtype mice were cultured, expanded, and characterized for their cell morphology, surface antigen expression, osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation, colony forming units, and inflammatory cytokine and chemokine levels in vitro. Furthermore, the therapeutic efficacy of the cells was assessed in vivo by transplantation into EAE mice. The results indicated that the ASCs from EAE mice displayed a normal phenotype, typical MSC surface antigen expression, and in vitro osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation capacity, while their osteogenic differentiation capacity was reduced in comparison with their unafflicted control mice. The ASCs from EAE mice also demonstrated increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, specifically an elevation in the expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and keratin chemoattractant. In vivo, infusion of wild type ASCs significantly ameliorate the disease course, autoimmune mediated demyelination and cell infiltration through the regulation of the inflammatory responses, however, mice treated with autologous ASCs showed no therapeutic improvement on the disease progression

    Robust evidence for bisexual orientation among men

    The question whether some men have a bisexual orientation—that is, whether they are substantially sexually aroused and attracted to both sexes—has remained controversial among both scientists and laypersons. Skeptics believe that male sexual orientation can only be homosexual or heterosexual, and that bisexual identification reflects nonsexual concerns, such as a desire to deemphasize homosexuality. Although most bisexual-identified men report that they are attracted to both men and women, self-report data cannot refute these claims. Patterns of physiological (genital) arousal to male and female erotic stimuli can provide compelling evidence for male sexual orientation. (In contrast, most women provide similar physiological responses to male and female stimuli.) We investigated whether men who self-report bisexual feelings tend to produce bisexual arousal patterns. Prior studies of this issue have been small, used potentially invalid statistical tests, and produced inconsistent findings. We combined nearly all previously published data (from eight previous studies in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada), yielding a sample of 474 to 588 men (depending on analysis). All participants were cisgender males. Highly robust results showed that bisexual-identified men’s genital and subjective arousal patterns were more bisexual than were those who identified as exclusively heterosexual or homosexual. These findings support the view that male sexual orientation contains a range, from heterosexuality, to bisexuality, to homosexuality
