    On the relevance of Reynolds stresses in resolvent analyses of turbulent wall-bounded flows

    The ability of linear stochastic response analysis to estimate coherent motions is investigated in turbulent channel flow at friction Reynolds number Reτ_\tau = 1007. The analysis is performed for spatial scales characteristic of buffer-layer and large-scale motions by separating the contributions of different temporal frequencies. Good agreement between the measured spatio-temporal power spectral densities and those estimated by means of the resolvent is found when the effect of turbulent Reynolds stresses, modelled with an eddy-viscosity associated to the turbulent mean flow, is included in the resolvent operator. The agreement is further improved when the flat forcing power spectrum (white noise) is replaced with a power spectrum matching the measures. Such a good agreement is not observed when the eddy-viscosity terms are not included in the resolvent operator. In this case, the estimation based on the resolvent is unable to select the right peak frequency and wall-normal location of buffer-layer motions. Similar results are found when comparing truncated expansions of measured streamwise velocity power spectral densities based on a spectral proper orthogonal decomposition to those obtained with optimal resolvent modes

    PyPlutchik: Visualising and comparing emotion-annotated corpora

    The increasing availability of textual corpora and data fetched from social networks is fuelling a huge production of works based on the model proposed by psychologist Robert Plutchik, often referred simply as the “Plutchik Wheel”. Related researches range from annotation tasks description to emotions detection tools. Visualisation of such emotions is traditionally carried out using the most popular layouts, as bar plots or tables, which are however sub-optimal. The classic representation of the Plutchik’s wheel follows the principles of proximity and opposition between pairs of emotions: spatial proximity in this model is also a semantic proximity, as adjacent emotions elicit a complex emotion (a primary dyad) when triggered together; spatial opposition is a semantic opposition as well, as positive emotions are opposite to negative emotions. The most common layouts fail to preserve both features, not to mention the need of visually allowing comparisons between different corpora in a blink of an eye, that is hard with basic design solutions. We introduce PyPlutchik the Pyplutchik package is available as a Github repository (http://github.com/alfonsosemeraro/pyplutchik) or through the installation commands pip or conda. For any enquiry about usage or installation feel free to contact the corresponding author, a Python module specifically designed for the visualisation of Plutchik’s emotions in texts or in corpora. PyPlutchik draws the Plutchik’s flower with each emotion petal sized after how much that emotion is detected or annotated in the corpus, also representing three degrees of intensity for each of them. Notably, PyPlutchik allows users to display also primary, secondary, tertiary and opposite dyads in a compact, intuitive way. We substantiate our claim that PyPlutchik outperforms other classic visualisations when displaying Plutchik emotions and we showcase a few examples that display our module’s most compelling features

    Investigation on the effect of the gas-to-metal ratio on powder properties and PBF-LB/M processability

    Metal powders for the laser powder bed fusion process are usually produced via gas atomization. However, due to the tight particle size distribution required for this application, the yield of the atomization process is low, resulting in a high-powder cost. In this work, atomization process parameters were varied to increase the gas-to-metal ratio to reduce the particle size distribution produced, and therefore increase the yield of the process. As a result, eight powders were produced starting from scrap AISI 136L material at different gas-to-metal ratio values, and the atomization process yield was successfully increased by 50%. First, the eight powders were characterized in terms of powder size, shape distributions, and flowability. Later, all powders were used to produce tensile specimens. The powders produced at higher yield exhibited a larger number of fine particles but slightly lower circularity, particularly in the coarse fraction. Furthermore, powders produced at a high gas-to-metal ratio demonstrated enhanced flowing properties and higher packing density. Consequently, these powders exhibited superior tensile performance, with ultimate tensile strength (UTS) ranging from 651 to 673 MPa and elongation values between 63 and 66%

    Ocular Refraction at Birth and Its Development During the First Year of Life in a Large Cohort of Babies in a Single Center in Northern Italy

    The purpose of this study was to investigate refraction at birth and during the first year of life in a large cohort of babies born in a single center in Northern Italy. We also aimed to analyze refractive errors in relation to the gestational age at birth. An observational ophthalmological assessment was performed within 24 h of birth on 12,427 newborns. Refraction was examined using streak retinoscopy after the administration of tropicamide (1%). Values in the range of between +0.50 ≀ D ≀ +4.00 were defined as physiological refraction at birth. Newborns with refraction values outside of the physiological range were followed up during the first year of life. Comparative analyses were conducted in a subgroup of babies with known gestational ages. The following distribution of refraction at birth was recorded: 88.03% of the babies had physiological refraction, 5.03% had moderate hyperopia, 2.14% had severe hyperopia, 3.4%, had emmetropia, 0.45%, had myopia, 0.94% had astigmatism, and 0.01% had anisometropia. By the end of the first year of life, we observed reductions in hyperopia and astigmatism, and stabilization of myopia. Preterm babies had a four-fold higher risk of congenital myopia and a three-fold higher risk of congenital emmetropia as compared to term babies. Refraction profiles obtained at birth changed during the first year of life, leading to a normalization of the refraction values. Gestational age at birth affected the incidence of refractive errors and amblyopia

    Artificial Intelligence systems are increasingly playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives. As their importance in our everyday lives grows, it is fundamental that the internal mechanisms that guide these algorithms are as clear as possible. It is not by chance that the recent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) emphasized the users’ right to explanation when people face artificial intelligence-based technologies. Unfortunately, the current research tends to go in the opposite direction, since most of the approaches try to maximize the effectiveness of the models (e.g., recommendation accuracy) at the expense of the explainability and the transparency. The main research questions which arise from this scenario is straightforward: how can we deal with such a dichotomy between the need for effective adaptive systems and the right to transparency and interpretability? Several research lines are triggered by this question: building transparent intelligent systems, analyzing the impact of opaque algorithms on final users, studying the role of explanation strategies, investigating how to provide users with more control in the behavior of intelligent systems. XAI.it, the first Italian workshop on Explainable AI, tries to address these research lines and aims to provide a forum for the Italian community to discuss problems, challenges and innovative approaches in the various sub-fields of XAI

    Optimization of cutting conditions using an evolutive online procedure

    This paper proposes an online evolutive procedure to optimize the Material Removal Rate in a turning process considering a stochastic constraint. The usual industrial approach in finishing operations is to change the tool insert at the end of each machining feature to avoid defective parts. Consequently, all parts are produced at highly conservative conditions (low levels of feed and speed), and therefore, at low productivity. In this work, a framework to estimate the stochastic constraint of tool wear during the production of a batch is proposed. A simulation campaign was carried out to evaluate the performances of the proposed procedure. The results showed that it was possible to improve the Material Removal Rate during the production of the batch and keeping the probability of defective parts under a desired level

    A Giant Gastric Hyperplastic Polyp in Non-Familial Juvenile Polyposis of the Stomach: A Case Report

    Juvenile Polyposis Syndrome (JPS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by juvenile polyps of the gastrointestinal tract, which may also occur in people with no family history of the disorder. It usually involves the colorectum and more rarely the stomach. Juvenile polyps can vary in size from a few millimeters to over 5cm, and, although they have microscopically specific characteristics, the distinction between them and inflammatory polyps is often difficult. Here we present a case of 41 year old woman with no family history of polyposis who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) because of anemia that showed a huge and extensive gastric lesion (10 cm in diameter) and other small polyps scattered through the stomach lumen and duodenum. The histology report revealed the big lesion and the polyps were hyperplastic polyps with infiltration of inflammatory cells. Due to clinical history and EGDS findings, the patient underwent a pylorus-preserving gastrectomy, and to define a final diagnosis genetic test was performed and showed mutation in the SMAD4 gene. Thus non-familial juvenile polyposis of the stomach was diagnosed. An original feature of the current case was the rare finding of huge hyperplastic gastric polyp in a woman with rare non-familial JPS of the stomach. In fact, to our best knowledge this is the first report describing a so giant gastric polyp in JPS of the stomach in an adult woman. Furthermore, our report suggests that it is noteworthy to consider JP as differential diagnosis in patients with non-familial polyposis, anemia or hypoproteinemia and polyps histologically diagnosed as hyperplastic and performing genetic testing for confirming diagnosis and helping in the timely and appropriate management

    Central serous chorioretinopathy: Pathogenesis and management

    Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a common retina disease and has a relative high recurrence rate, etiology, and pathogenesis of which remains largely ambiguous. The effects on the retina are usually self-limited, although some people are left with permanent vision loss due to progressive and irreversible photoreceptor damage or retinal pigment epithelium atrophy. There have been a number of interventions used in CSC, including, but not limited to, laser treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT), intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents, and subthreshold lasers. It is not clear whether there is a clinically important benefit to treating acute CSC, which often resolves spontaneously as part of its natural history. Of the interventions studied to date, PDT and micropulse laser treatment appear the most promising

    Emotional profiling and cognitive networks unravel how mainstream and alternative press framed AstraZeneca, Pfizer and COVID-19 vaccination campaigns

To understand how mainstream and alternative media debated vaccines, we introduce a paradigm reconstructing time-evolving narrative frames via cognitive networks and natural language processing. We study Italian news articles massively re-shared on Facebook/Twitter (up to 5 million times), covering 5745 vaccine-related news from 17 news outlets over 8 months. We find consistently high trust/anticipation and low disgust in the way mainstream sources framed "vaccine/vaccino". These emotions were crucially missing in alternative outlets. News titles from alternative sources framed "AstraZeneca" with sadness, absent in mainstream titles. Initially, mainstream news linked mostly "Pfizer" with side effects (e.g. "allergy", "reaction", "fever"). With the temporary suspension of "AstraZeneca", negative associations shifted: Mainstream titles prominently linked "AstraZeneca" with side effects, while "Pfizer" underwent a positive valence shift, linked to its higher efficacy. Simultaneously, thrombosis and fearful conceptual associations entered the frame of vaccines, while death changed context, i.e. rather than hopefully preventing deaths, vaccines could be reported as potential causes of death, increasing fear. Our findings expose crucial aspects of the emotional narratives around COVID-19 vaccines adopted by the press, highlighting the need to understand how alternative and mainstream media report vaccination news
