‘Delightfully depressing’: Death/doom metal music world and the emotional responses of the fan

    Get PDF
Death/doom metal music, from both sides of the name, usually occupies itself with the darker spectrum of human emotion. Depression, melancholy, and death are common themes in the music and in the reception of this music from an outsider point of view. In line with symbolic interactionism, these emotional responses differ significantly when they originate from a well-socialized member of this music world. This suggests that one may think of emotional responses as conventions of a music world. Common responses provide an emotional repertoire for members, and furthermore they become an adhesive for the community. In this article, I discuss my research of the fans of death/doom metal, and explore the ways in which the fan responds to the music while contemplating on how death/doom function in the lives of these fans

Investigation on the Determinants of Turkish Export-Boom in 2000s

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the causes of Turkish export-boom after 2000 in the manufacturing sector. We mainly concentrate on cost and productivity aspects of the production in the manufacturing sector. Effects of productivity, wage and exchange rate are analyzed in the framework of the augmented unit labor cost model. Following the Edwards and Golub (2004) paper we use the dynamic panel data techniques for the analysis. In addition, the importance of the above mentioned factors is examined for the rising and declining sectors. We find that manufacturing export is negatively related to the unit labor cost (ULC). Decomposition of ULC into its two components also shows that an improvement in productivity increases export while an increase in nominal wages decreases it. We also find that nominal wage is an important factor in the declining sectors while productivity is the stimulus in rising sectors.Manufacturing export; unit labor cost; wage; productivity; real effective exchange rate

The Competitiveness of Turkey with Respect to the Slovak Republic for the 1995-1999 Period

    Get PDF
This paper examines Turkey’s international cost competitiveness in manufacturing with respect to the Slovak Republic, and quantitatively investigates the relationship between Turkish cost competitiveness and the exports of manufactured goods at an industry level. The Relative Unit Labor Cost (RULC) measure and dynamic panel data techniques are employed for this analysis. We find that Turkey is not competitive with respect to Slovakia for the 1995-1999 period. The Competitiveness of Slovakia mainly depends on its relatively higher level of labor productivity.Manufacturing export; competitiveness; relative unit labor cost; wage; productivity

IMPROVING THE SKILLS OF WRITING A THOUGHT PARAGRAPH IN 7TH GRADE STUDENTS: AN ACTION RESEARCH STUDY

    Get PDF
This action research study was conducted to improve the skills of writing a thought paragraph in 7th  grade students. The study was planned for a 14-week period and a total of 25 activities were implemented with students during the study. Interviews held with Turkish teachers, journals kept by the researcher and the students in relation to the study contributed to the course of the research. At the end of the study, it was observed that the students had a preconception against writing before starting the action research study. According to the findings of the study, it is understood that the students did not receive a paragraph-only education, and that the paragraph types are briefly addressed in Turkish courses. This may have led students to have prejudice about writing and paragraph type. Students have undergone a process-based activity implementation that moves from word to sentence, and from sentence to paragraph. The activities applied to students during the action research study were created to achieve inductive and deductive learning, completing a piece, gaining the skills of comprehensive and critical thinking about an event or a subject. It was seen in the students’ journal entries and written essays that the skills of thought paragraph writing gradually improved. This action research study revealed that if students are provided with comprehensive thought paragraph writing training, they would be able to write thought paragraphs at the desired level. It is thought that if students are given more comprehensive training on paragraph types, students' problems with their ability to write would be reduced.  Article visualizations

A ChatGPT Prompt for Writing Case-Based Multiple-Choice Questions

    Get PDF
The significant challenge faced by medical schools is the effortful process of writing a high quantity of high-quality case-based multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to assess the higher-order skills of medical students. The demand for a high volume of MCQs in education has led to the development of Automatic Item Generation (AIG), specifically template-based AIG, which involves creating cognitive and item models by subject matter experts to generate hundreds of MCQs at once using software. It demonstrated significant success in various languages and even being incorporated into national medical licensure exams. However, this method still heavily depends on the efforts of subject matter experts. This paper introduces a detailed ChatGPT prompt for quickly generating case-based MCQs and provides important research questions for future exploration into ChatGPT's potential in generating items, signaling the beginning of the artificial intelligence era in medical education, encouraging health professions education researchers to delve deeper into its potential

'The Barghest o' Whitby': (A Genealogical Study of) Death/Doom Metal Music(al) Network in Northern England

Metal music has existed in one form or another for about half a century. While the musical style and the culture started out in a relatively unified way, with the 'extreme turn’ of late 80s and 90s, metal culture stratified. Doom metal, being one of the oldest styles in this newly formed structure, became even more fragmented. Death/doom is such a style. These smaller styles in metal culture have so far been investigated hierarchically. However, the implication that a hierarchy has is problematic in this context. Metal music studies is a budding field, so, we need to think more critically about the way we conceptualise the history of metal academically in these early years. Yet, so far, this stratification, with its hierarchy, has not been challenged or even discussed in detail. Scholarship often mentions these so-called ‘sub-genres’ uncritically. In order to challenge this idea, there needs to be a new model. However, because of the size and breadth of metal culture, one single work cannot come even close to covering the styles existing today. In this thesis, I attempt to draw boundaries around only death/doom to propose a way of modelling a new metal history. To achieve this, I define these newer and smaller styles as marginal styles using marginality idea of Park. Following this idea, sociology of music comes to rescue with Crossley’s music worlds. Music worlds, because of its emphasis put on the musical style -it is central-, is an intriguing perspective to look at the fragmented nature of metal music. A metal music world is a social construction performed by the participants, including musicians, fans, engineers, managers, label executives, and the press, around a metal musical style. These smaller styles, then, become ideal candidates for the application of this theory. This thesis treats death/doom in such a way using ethnographic, historical, and musicological methods

The present study tries to explain what imagery is and how commonly it is used by athletes to increase performance. This study aims to provide information that imagery (mental visualization) is a very powerful tool to increase athletes’ performance and to provide guidance based on sport psychology. The aim of the present study is to determine the types and levels of using imagery in sport in amateur league Soccer players. Sport Imagery Questionnaire was given to a total of 190 Soccer players aged between 18 and 35 who were playing in amateur leagues of Samsun province. In the study conducted, no significant difference was found between the ages of female and male amateur Soccer players (p>0.05). At the same time, no significant difference was found between their sport years (p>0.05). In addition, no significant difference was found in motivational general mastery (MG- M) and (MS) in terms of gender and in the comparison of imagery scores in terms of age category and sport years (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that the visualization status of amateur Soccer players varies slightly according to gender, age group and year of sports. It was observed that the visualization scores were better as the age of sports increased. It is thought that starting sports at earlier contributes to the good visualization scores. It may be suggested that children should be directed to Soccer at an earlier age.  Article visualizations
