Suspending Lefschetz fibrations, with an application to Local Mirror Symmetry
We consider the suspension operation on Lefschetz fibrations, which takes
p(x) to p(x)-y^2. This leaves the Fukaya category of the fibration invariant,
and changes the category of the fibre (or more precisely, the subcategory
consisting of a basis of vanishing cycles) in a specific way. As an
application, we prove part of Homological Mirror Symmetry for the total spaces
of canonical bundles over toric del Pezzo surfaces.Comment: v2: slightly expanded expositio
A beginner's introduction to Fukaya categories
The goal of these notes is to give a short introduction to Fukaya categories
and some of their applications. The first half of the text is devoted to a
brief review of Lagrangian Floer (co)homology and product structures. Then we
introduce the Fukaya category (informally and without a lot of the necessary
technical detail), and briefly discuss algebraic concepts such as exact
triangles and generators. Finally, we mention wrapped Fukaya categories and
outline a few applications to symplectic topology, mirror symmetry and
low-dimensional topology. This text is based on a series of lectures given at a
Summer School on Contact and Symplectic Topology at Universit\'e de Nantes in
June 2011.Comment: 42 pages, 13 figure
THz-range free-electron laser ESR spectroscopy: techniques and applications in high magnetic fields
The successful use of picosecond-pulse free-electron-laser (FEL) radiation
for the continuous-wave THz-range electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy
has been demonstrated. The combination of two linac-based FELs (covering the
wavelength range of 4 - 250 m) with pulsed magnetic fields up to 70 T
allows for multi-frequency ESR spectroscopy in a frequency range of 1.2 - 75
THz with a spectral resolution better than 1%. The performance of the
spectrometer is illustrated with ESR spectra obtained in the
2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the low-dimensional organic material
(CHN)CuCl.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. Rev. Sci. Instrum., accepte
Ramsey interferometry with oppositely detuned fields
We report a narrowing of the interference pattern obtained in an atomic
Ramsey interferometer if the two separated fields have different frequency and
their phase difference is controlled. The width of the Ramsey fringes depends
inversely on the free flight time of ground state atoms before entering the
first field region in addition to the time between the fields. The effect is
stable also for atomic wavepackets with initial position and momentum
distributions and for realistic mode functions.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Symplectic cohomology and q-intersection numbers
Given a symplectic cohomology class of degree 1, we define the notion of an
equivariant Lagrangian submanifold. The Floer cohomology of equivariant
Lagrangian submanifolds has a natural endomorphism, which induces a grading by
generalized eigenspaces. Taking Euler characteristics with respect to the
induced grading yields a deformation of the intersection number. Dehn twists
act naturally on equivariant Lagrangians. Cotangent bundles and Lefschetz
fibrations give fully computable examples. A key step in computations is to
impose the "dilation" condition stipulating that the BV operator applied to the
symplectic cohomology class gives the identity. Equivariant Lagrangians mirror
equivariant objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, expanded introduction, added details of example

The Evolution of Distorted Rotating Black Holes II: Dynamics and Analysis
We have developed a numerical code to study the evolution of distorted,
rotating black holes. This code is used to evolve a new family of black hole
initial data sets corresponding to distorted ``Kerr'' holes with a wide range
of rotation parameters, and distorted Schwarzschild black holes with odd-parity
radiation. Rotating black holes with rotation parameters as high as
are evolved and analyzed in this paper. The evolutions are generally carried
out to about , where is the ADM mass. We have extracted both the
even- and odd-parity gravitational waveforms, and find the quasinormal modes of
the holes to be excited in all cases. We also track the apparent horizons of
the black holes, and find them to be a useful tool for interpreting the
numerical results. We are able to compute the masses of the black holes from
the measurements of their apparent horizons, as well as the total energy
radiated and find their sum to be in excellent agreement with the ADM mass.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX with RevTeX 3.0 macros. 27 uuencoded gz-compressed

Accurate Evolutions of Orbiting Binary Black Holes
We present a detailed analysis of binary black hole evolutions in the last orbit and demonstrate consistent and convergent results for the trajectories of the individual bodies. The gauge choice can significantly affect the overall accuracy of the evolution. It is possible to reconcile certain gauge-dependent discrepancies by examining the convergence limit. We illustrate these results using an initial data set recently evolved by BrĂĽgmann et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 211101 (2004)]. For our highest resolution and most accurate gauge, we estimate the duration of this data set's last orbit to be approximately 59MADM
Dynamical Evolution of Boson Stars II: Excited States and Self-Interacting Fields
The dynamical evolution of self-gravitating scalar field configurations in
numerical relativity is studied. The previous analysis on ground state boson
stars of non-interacting fields is extended to excited states and to fields
with self couplings.
Self couplings can significantly change the physical dimensions of boson
stars, making them much more astrophysically interesting (e.g., having mass of
order 0.1 solar mass). The stable () and unstable () branches of
equilibrium configurations of boson stars of self-interacting fields are
studied; their behavior under perturbations and their quasi-normal oscillation
frequencies are determined and compared to the non-interacting case.
Excited states of boson stars with and without self-couplings are studied and
compared. Excited states also have equilibrium configurations with and
branch structures; both branches are intrinsically unstable under a generic
perturbation but have very different instability time scales. We carried out a
detailed study of the instability time scales of these configurations. It is
found that highly excited states spontaneously decay through a cascade of
intermediate states similar to atomic transitions.Comment: 16 pages+ 13 figures . All figures are available at

Event Horizons in Numerical Relativity I: Methods and Tests
This is the first paper in a series on event horizons in numerical
relativity. In this paper we present methods for obtaining the location of an
event horizon in a numerically generated spacetime. The location of an event
horizon is determined based on two key ideas: (1) integrating backward in time,
and (2) integrating the whole horizon surface. The accuracy and efficiency of
the methods are examined with various sample spacetimes, including both
analytic (Schwarzschild and Kerr) and numerically generated black holes. The
numerically evolved spacetimes contain highly distorted black holes, rotating
black holes, and colliding black holes. In all cases studied, our methods can
find event horizons to within a very small fraction of a grid zone.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX with RevTeX 3.0 macros, 20 uuencoded gz-compressed
