    Magnetic characterization of the frustrated three-leg ladder compound [(CuCl2tachH)3Cl]Cl2

    We report the magnetic features of a new one-dimensional stack of antiferromagnetically coupled equilateral copper(II) triangles. High-field magnetization measurements show that the interaction between the copper triangles is of the same order of magnitude as the intra-triangle exchange although only coupled via hydrogen bonds. The infinite chain turns out to be an interesting example of a frustrated cylindrical three-leg ladder with competing intra- and inter-triangle interactions. We demonstrate that the ground state is a spin singlet which is gaped from the triplet excitation.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, revised version submitted to Phys. Rev. B.     Use of Physiotherapy Prior to Total Knee Arthroplasty-Results of the Prospective FInGK Study

    Background: Data regarding physiotherapy (PT) utilization prior to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to examine which percentage of patients receive PT within 12 months prior to TKA and which factors are associated with its use. Methods: Consecutive patients (≥18 years) undergoing primary or revision TKA in a German university hospital were recruited. A questionnaire including information on PT utilization, demography, and socioeconomics was collected one day prior to surgery and linked to medical hospital records. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to determine variables associated with the use of PT. Results: A total of 241 out of 283 (85%) patients participated (60% female; mean age: 68.4 years). Overall, 41% received PT at least once during 12 months prior to TKA, women more frequently than men (48% vs. 29%). Although high disease burden was associated with increased utilization, about one in two in this condition did not receive PT. Multivariable logistic regression showed that age 75+ years, low education level, and moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms were associated with decreased PT utilization. Conclusions: We found low use of recommended PT management in patients prior to TKA. This potential underuse was even higher in some vulnerable subgroups, indicating inequalities. Prescribers as well as patients should integrate PT more consistently into osteoarthritis management

    Design and implementation of a random neural network routing engine

    Random neural network (RNN) is an analytically tractable spiked neural network model that has been implemented in software for a wide range of applications for over a decade. This paper presents the hardware implementation of the RNN model. Recently, cognitive packet networks (CPN) is proposed as an alternative packet network architecture where there is no routing table, instead RNN based reinforcement learning is used to route packets. Particularly, we describe implementation details for the RNN based routing engine of a CPN network processor chip: the smart packet processor (SPP). The SPP is a dual port device that stores, modifies, and interprets the defining characteristics of multiple RNN models. In addition to hardware design improvements over the software implementation such as dual access memory, output calculation step, reduced output calculation module, this paper introduces a major modification to the reinforcement learning algorithm used in the original CPN specification such that the number of weight terms are reduced from 2n2 to 2n. This not only yields significant memory savings, but it also simplifies the calculations for the steady state probabilities (neuron outputs in RNN). Simulations have been conducted to confirm the proper functionality for the isolated SPP design as well as for the multiple SPP\u27s in a networked environment

    Water-soluble full-length single-wall carbon nanotube polyelectrolytes: Preparation and characterization

    HiPco single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been noncovalently modified with ionic pyrene and naphthalene derivatives to prepare water-soluble SWNT polyelectrolytes (SWNT-PEs), which are analogous to polyanions and polycations. The modified nanotubes have been characterized with UV-vis-NIR, fluorescence, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nanotube-adsorbate interactions consist of π-π stacking interactions between the aromatic core of the adsorbate and the nanotube surface and specific contributions because of the substituents. The interaction between nanotubes and adsorbates also involves charge transfer from adsorbates to SWNTs, and with naphthalene sulfonates the role of a free amino group was important. The ionic surface charge density of the modified SWNTs is constant and probably controlled by electrostatic repulsion between like charges. The linear ionic charge density of the modified SWNTs is similar to that of common highly charged polyelectrolytes

    Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 as a Therapeutic Target in Endometrial Cancer Management

    In the Western world, endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common malignant tumor of the female genital tract. Solid tumors like EC outgrow their vasculature resulting in hypoxia. Tumor hypoxia is important because it renders an aggressive phenotype and leads to radio- and chemo-therapy resistance. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) plays an essential role in the adaptive cellular response to hypoxia and is associated with poor clinical outcome in EC. Therefore, HIF-1 could be an attractive therapeutic target. Selective HIF-1 inhibitors have not been identified. A number of nonselective inhibitors which target signaling pathways upstream or downstream HIF-1 are known to decrease HIF-1α protein levels. In clinical trials for the treatment of advanced and/or recurrent EC are the topoisomerase I inhibitor Topotecan, mTOR-inhibitor Rapamycin, and angiogenesis inhibitor Bevacizumab. Preliminary data shows encouraging results for these agents. Further work is needed to identify selective HIF-1 inhibitors and to translate these into clinical trials

    Factors Associated With Nonunion in Arthrodesis of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint:A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study

    BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint is the current treatment of choice for symptomatic advanced hallux rigidus and moderate-to-severe hallux valgus. There are different methods to perform arthrodesis, yet no consensus on the best approach. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of preoperative and postoperative hallux valgus angle (HVA), joint preparation and fixation technique, and postoperative immobilization on the incidence of nonunion.METHODS: A retrospective multicenter cohort study was performed that included 794 patients. Univariate and multiple logistic regression was conducted to determine associations between joint preparation, fixation techniques, postoperative immobilization, weightbearing, and pre- and postoperative HVA with nonunion.RESULTS: Nonunion incidence was 15.2%, with 11.1% symptomatic and revised. Joint preparation using hand instruments (OR 3.75, CI 1.90-7.42) and convex/concave reamers (OR 2.80, CI 1.52-5.16) were associated with greater odds of a nonunion compared to planar cuts. Joint fixation with crossed screws was associated with greater odds of nonunion (OR 2.00, CI 1.11-3.42), as was greater preoperative HVA (OR 1.02, CI 1.00-1.03). However, the latter effect disappeared after inclusion of postoperative HVA in the model, with a small association identified between residual postoperative HVA and nonunion (OR 1.04, CI 1.01-1.08). Similarly, we found an association between odds of nonunion and higher body weight (OR 1.02, CI 1.01-1.04) but not of body mass index.CONCLUSION: Based on our results, first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis with planar cuts and fixation with a plate and interfragmentary screw is associated with the lowest odds of resulting in a nonunion. Higher body weight and greater preoperative HVA were associated with slight increase in rates of nonunion. It is crucial to properly correct the hallux valgus deformity during surgery.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, retrospective case control study.</p

    New apparatus for DTA at 2000 bar: thermodynamic studies on Au, Ag, Al and HTSC oxides

    A new DTA (Differential Thermal Analysis) device was designed and installed in a Hot Isostatic Pressure (HIP) furnace in order to perform high-pressure thermodynamic investigations up to 2 kbar and 1200C. Thermal analysis can be carried out in inert or oxidising atmosphere up to p(O2) = 400 bar. The calibration of the DTA apparatus under pressure was successfully performed using the melting temperature (Tm) of pure metals (Au, Ag and Al) as standard calibration references. The thermal properties of these metals have been studied under pressure. The values of DV (volume variation between liquid and solid at Tm), ROsm (density of the solid at Tm) and ALPHAm (linear thermal expansion coefficient at Tm) have been extracted. A very good agreement was found with the existing literature and new data were added. This HP-DTA apparatus is very useful for studying the thermodynamics of those systems where one or more volatile elements are present, such as high TC superconducting oxides. DTA measurements have been performed on Bi,Pb(2223) tapes up to 2 kbar under reduced oxygen partial pressure (p(O2) = 0.07 bar). The reaction leading to the formation of the 2223 phase was found to occur at higher temperatures when applying pressure: the reaction DTA peak shifted by 49C at 2 kbar compared to the reaction at 1 bar. This temperature shift is due to the higher stability of the Pb-rich precursor phases under pressure, as the high isostatic pressure prevents Pb from evaporating.Comment: 6 figures, 3 tables, Thermodynamics, Thermal property, Bi-2223, fundamental valu
