Sugar-based bicyclic monomers for aliphatic polyesters: a comparative appraisal of acetalized alditols and isosorbide

    Get PDF
Three series of polyalkanoates (adipates, suberates and sebacates) were synthesized using as monomers three sugar-based bicyclic diols derived from D-glucose (Glux-diol and isosorbide) and D-mannose (Manx-diol). Polycondensations were conducted in the melt applying similar reaction conditions for all cases. The aim was to compare the three bicyclic diols regarding their suitability to render aliphatic polyesters with enhanced thermal and mechanical properties. The ensuing polyesters had molecular weights (Mw) in the 25,000–50,000 g mol-1 range with highest values being attained for Glux-diol. All the polyesters started to decompose above 300 °C and most of them did not display perceivable crystallinity. On the contrary, they had glass transition temperatures much higher than usually found in homologous polyesters made of alkanediols, and showed a stress– strain behavior consistent with their Tg values. Glux-diol was particularly effective in increasing the Tg and to render therefore polyesters with high elastic modulus and considerable mechanical strength.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Triblock copolyesters derived from lactic acid and glucose: synthesis, nanoparticle formation and simulation

ABA triblock copolyesters were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide in solution initiated by a telechelic d-glucose-based polyester macroinitiator. The macroinitiator with a number-average molecular weight about 2500 g mol-1 was synthesized by non-stoichiometric polycondensation in the melt of 2,4:3,5-di-O-methylene-d-glucitol and dimethyl succinate. Two triblock copolyesters of Mn ranging between ~6000 and ~9000 g mol-1, and differing in the length of the polylactide blocks were prepared. These copolyesters started to decompose when heated at ~220 °C and degraded slowly upon aqueous incubation under physiological conditions. They did not display any perceivable crystallinity and showed a single glass transition temperature (Tg) around 60 °C with the higher value corresponding to the larger content in glucitol units. The copolyesters were able to form nanoparticles with average diameters of ~100–130 nm and satisfactory dispersity. The effect of the block lengths on size, ¿-potential values and physical stability of the nanoparticles was evaluated. A molecular dynamics simulation study allowed modelling the two-phase structure of the nanoparticles and evidenced the preference of the glucose-based block to be peripherally located.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Composite Gels Based on Poly (Vinyl alcohol) for Biomedical Uses

    Get PDF
Nowadays, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels are being studied for several biomedical applications such as joint replacement, wound dressings and controlled drug-releasing devices, among others. Reinforced PVA hydrogels show good mechanical properties and are a suitable option to replace cartilages. Furthermore, these materials can prevent loss of body fluids, be a barrier against bacteria and also permeable to oxygen, for these all interesting properties, they are used like wound dressings. For drug delivery systems a material that can control the dose and release at the site of action is desirable, this can be accomplished using hydrogels, which are loaded with a drug, and then they can release it when an external stimulus (light, temperature, magnetic field, etc.) takes place. The aim of this work was to obtain composite hydrogels for the previously mentioned biomedical applications. Hydroxyapatite (HA) reinforced PVA gels were prepared for potential uses as cartilage replacement, HA improves the mechanical, tribological and fixing properties of the polymer, reaching values similar to that of the cartilages. For wound dressings, the hydrogel was reinforced with bentonite (clay) in order to increase the dimensional stability and antimicrobial properties. Gels with controlled drug release capability under magnetic stimulation (ferrogels) were also synthesized and characterized here.Fil: Hoppe, Cristina Elena. Assessment of pertussis vaccination strategies using a mathematical model of disease transmission

Insights into Embryo Defenses of the Invasive Apple Snail Pomacea canaliculata: Egg Mass Ingestion Affects Rat Intestine Morphology and Growth

    Get PDF
Background:The spread of the invasive snail Pomacea canaliculata is expanding the rat lungworm disease beyond its native range. Their toxic eggs have virtually no predators and unusual defenses including a neurotoxic lectin and a proteinase inhibitor, presumably advertised by a warning coloration. We explored the effect of egg perivitellin fluid (PVF) ingestion on the rat small intestine morphology and physiology.Methodology/Principal Findings:Through a combination of biochemical, histochemical, histopathological, scanning electron microscopy, cell culture and feeding experiments, we analyzed intestinal morphology, growth rate, hemaglutinating activity, cytotoxicity and cell proliferation after oral administration of PVF to rats. PVF adversely affects small intestine metabolism and morphology and consequently the standard growth rate, presumably by lectin-like proteins, as suggested by PVF hemaglutinating activity and its cytotoxic effect on Caco-2 cell culture. Short-term effects of ingested PVF were studied in growing rats. PVF-supplemented diet induced the appearance of shorter and wider villi as well as fused villi. This was associated with changes in glycoconjugate expression, increased cell proliferation at crypt base, and hypertrophic mucosal growth. This resulted in a decreased absorptive surface after 3 days of treatment and a diminished rat growth rate that reverted to normal after the fourth day of treatment. Longer exposure to PVF induced a time-dependent lengthening of the small intestine while switching to a control diet restored intestine length and morphology after 4 days.Conclusions/Significance:Ingestion of PVF rapidly limits the ability of potential predators to absorb nutrients by inducing large, reversible changes in intestinal morphology and growth rate. The occurrence of toxins that affect intestinal morphology and absorption is a strategy against predation not recognized among animals before. Remarkably, this defense is rather similar to the toxic effect of plant antipredator strategies. This defense mechanism may explain the near absence of predators of apple snail eggs.Instituto de Investigaciones Bioquímicas de La PlataFacultad de Ciencias Veterinaria

Drag coefficients and Strouhal numbers of a port crane boom girder section

    Get PDF
This work reports the drag coefficients (Cd) for three wind directions measured in low turbulence flow and in turbulent flow with characteristics of the atmospheric boundary layer wind, and the Strouhal numbers (St) of an approximately trapezoidal flanged section, used in the boom girder of a 100m high port crane. These experimental results were obtained at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel of the Dept. Aeronautica at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, in the range of Reynolds numbers between 30,000 and 180,000. The drag coefficients in the three studied directions showed a reduction for turbulent flow. Further measurements were carried out for the model with an inclination of 801 relative to the flow direction, the position of the crane boom when out of service, giving practically the same drag coefficients.Facultad de Ingenierí
