System uses digital logic and a voltage-controlled oscillator to obtain appropriate horizontal and vertical sync signals from the sync bursts contained in the original transmitted signal. It is useful in systems that exhibit considerable single amplitude fluctuation

Exploring the Demand for Retirement Planning Advice: The Role of Financial Literacy

    Get PDF
This research extends previous literature on the relationship between financial literacy and financial advice seeking in three ways: (1) we examine financial planner use specifically within the context of retirement planning, (2) we incorporate Huston’s (2010) framework of financial literacy, and (3) we use longitudinal data to investigate the initiation, maintenance, and termination of financial planner use. Results from the 2010 and 2012 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79) show a positive association between the components of financial literacy and financial planner use for retirement planning

Propaganda, Criticism, and War: A Study of Regime Criticism by Propagandists in War

    Get PDF
This paper investigates when propagandists criticize their country’s war effort, examining instances where propagandists openly criticize the regimes they are expected to support during an armed conflict. This is a unique and relatively unexplored angle on propaganda, differing from widespread research on the range of effects that propaganda has on a target population, the reasons behind using propaganda on a target population, and the methods propagandists use to raise support for a political authority. Understanding when propagandists criticize their country’s war effort can mitigate their influence by helping audiences identify when and how propagandists use criticism to their advantage. The paper hypothesizes that propagandists criticize their country’s war effort when a military failure is too apparent to ignore or deny and that they acknowledge smaller failures more often as war goes on to maintain credibility. These hypotheses were tested by measuring TV propagandist’s responses to several cases in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. The results are that more apparent failures garnered increased amounts of criticism from propagandists, and that the passage of time didn’t increase criticism of smaller failures unless they affected the Russian public

Citation: Heckman, Stuart J. and Seay, Martin C and Kim, Kyoung Tae and Letkiewicz, Jodi, Household Use of Financial Planners: Measurement Considerations for Researchers (November 2, 2016). Financial Services Review, Vol. 25, p. 427-446, 2016.Using the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board’s definition of financial planning, this paper evaluates the validity of the measures of financial planner use in publicly available datasets. A review of Financial Services Review, Journal of Personal Finance, Journal of Financial Planning, Journal of Family and Economic Issues, Journal of Consumer Affairs, and Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning identified seven datasets that were commonly used to investigate financial planner use. Of these, the two most promising measures were found in the Survey of Consumer Finances and the National Longitudinal Study of Youth (1979). However, an evaluation of these measures raises significant concerns related to their validity. This article critically evaluates these measures and provides insights into the development of better measures of financial planner use for the future

Seafloor Positioning across Juna de Fuca Ridge

The experiment represents a partnership that includes contributions from the USGS, the University of Hawaii; the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS); the DMA; the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD); and the U.S. Navy Submarine Group One.The results of an analysis of a complex data set acquired during the United States Geological Survey's Marine Crustal Deformation Study are presented. The experiment, which commenced in the spring of 1992 in a region of the Pacific known as the Juan de Fuca ridge, represents a first attempt to locally monitor plate dynamics in the marine environment using a network of tripod-mounted, dual-frequency acoustic transponders. The aim is to collect over a period of years time-series measurements of extension rates along the southern Juan de Fuca ridge. In addition, by collecting a combination of Global Positioning System satellite tracking data, low- frequency acoustics data, and water column pressure, conductivity, and temperature at depth, it was possible to extend geodetic control from land onto the seafloor. The methods to accomplish this latter goal of the experiment are described, as well as the final results. Baseline comparisons between several of the solutions obtained during this analysis are presented along with recommendations for additional data collection and analysis. The data were collected as part of an experiment in marine geodynamics conducted by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) with support from the University of Hawaii; the Naval Postgraduate School; the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA); the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD); and the U.S. Navy Submarine Group One
