A cohort study of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and PCV2 in 178 pigs from birth to 14 weeks on a single farm in England
Our hypothesis was that pigs that develop post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) are detectable from an early age with signs of weight loss and other clinical and serological abnormalities. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the temporally varying and fixed events linked with the clinical incidence of PMWS by comparing affected and unaffected pigs in a cohort of 178 male piglets. Piglets were enrolled at birth and examined each week. Samples of blood were collected at regular intervals. The exposures measured were porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) antibody titres in all 178 and PCV2 antigen in a subset of 75 piglets. We also observed piglet health and measured their weight, and a post-mortem examination was performed by an external laboratory on all pigs between 6 and 14 weeks of age that died. From the cohort, 14 (8%) pigs died from PMWS and 4% from other causes. A further 37 pigs between 6 and 14 weeks of age died from PMWS (30) and ileitis and other causes (7). PMWS was only apparent in pigs from 1 to 2 weeks before death when they wasted rapidly. There were no other characteristic clinical signs and no obvious gross clinical lesions post-mortem. There was no strong link with PCV2 antibody throughout life but PCV2 antigen level was higher from 4 to 6 weeks of age in pigs that died from PMWS compared with pigs that died from other causes

Low folate status may be a consequence of suboptimal intake, transport or cellular utilization of folate and, together with elevated homocysteine, is a recognized risk factor/marker for several human pathologies. As folate transport across cell membranes is mediated in part by the reduced folate carrier (RFC1), variants within this gene may influence disease risk via an effect on folate and/or homocysteine levels. The present study was undertaken to assess the association between the SLC19A1 (RFC1) c.80G>A polymorphism and folate/homocysteine concentrations in healthy young adults from Northern Ireland. The SLC19A1 c.80G>A polymorphism was not strongly associated with either serum folate or homocysteine concentrations in either men or women. However, in women, but not in men, this polymorphism explained 5% of the variation in red blood cell (RBC) folate levels (P=0.02). Relative to women with the SLC19A1 c.80GG genotype, women with the GA and AA genotypes had higher RBC folate concentrations. Consequently, compared to women with the SLC19A1 c.80AA and GA genotypes, women who are homozygous for the 80G allele may be at increased risk of having a child affected with a neural tube defect and of developing pathologies that have been associated with folate insufficiency, such as cardiovascular disease
Statistical coverage for supersymmetric parameter estimation: a case study with direct detection of dark matter
Models of weak-scale supersymmetry offer viable dark matter (DM) candidates.
Their parameter spaces are however rather large and complex, such that pinning
down the actual parameter values from experimental data can depend strongly on
the employed statistical framework and scanning algorithm. In frequentist
parameter estimation, a central requirement for properly constructed confidence
intervals is that they cover true parameter values, preferably at exactly the
stated confidence level when experiments are repeated infinitely many times.
Since most widely-used scanning techniques are optimised for Bayesian
statistics, one needs to assess their abilities in providing correct confidence
intervals in terms of the statistical coverage. Here we investigate this for
the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) when only
constrained by data from direct searches for dark matter. We construct
confidence intervals from one-dimensional profile likelihoods and study the
coverage by generating several pseudo-experiments for a few benchmark sets of
pseudo-true parameters. We use nested sampling to scan the parameter space and
evaluate the coverage for the benchmarks when either flat or logarithmic priors
are imposed on gaugino and scalar mass parameters. The sampling algorithm has
been used in the configuration usually adopted for exploration of the Bayesian
posterior. We observe both under- and over-coverage, which in some cases vary
quite dramatically when benchmarks or priors are modified. We show how most of
the variation can be explained as the impact of explicit priors as well as
sampling effects, where the latter are indirectly imposed by physicality
conditions. For comparison, we also evaluate the coverage for Bayesian credible
intervals, and observe significant under-coverage in those cases.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures; v2 includes major updates in response to

The Impact of Interorganizational Imitation on New Venture International Entry and Performance
We examine the impact of interorganizational imitation on new venture international entry and subsequent performance. Using a sample of 150 U.S.-based publicly held new ventures, we find that new venture international entry is in part an imitative response to the internationalization of other firms in the venture\u27s home country industry and/or subsets of firms with certain traits or outcomes. We also find that interorganizational imitation moderates the relationship between new venture international entry and profitability, but not the relationship between new venture international entry and sales growth. These findings contribute to the growing body of literature on new venture internationalization
Direct Constraints on Minimal Supersymmetry from Fermi-LAT Observations of the Dwarf Galaxy Segue 1
The dwarf galaxy Segue 1 is one of the most promising targets for the
indirect detection of dark matter. Here we examine what constraints 9 months of
Fermi-LAT gamma-ray observations of Segue 1 place upon the Constrained Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM), with the lightest neutralino as the dark
matter particle. We use nested sampling to explore the CMSSM parameter space,
simultaneously fitting other relevant constraints from accelerator bounds, the
relic density, electroweak precision observables, the anomalous magnetic moment
of the muon and B-physics. We include spectral and spatial fits to the Fermi
observations, a full treatment of the instrumental response and its related
uncertainty, and detailed background models. We also perform an extrapolation
to 5 years of observations, assuming no signal is observed from Segue 1 in that
time. Results marginally disfavour models with low neutralino masses and high
annihilation cross-sections. Virtually all of these models are however already
disfavoured by existing experimental or relic density constraints.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures; added extra scans with extreme halo parameters,

Annihilation vs. Decay: Constraining dark matter properties from a gamma-ray detection
Most proposed dark matter candidates are stable and are produced thermally in
the early Universe. However, there is also the possibility of unstable (but
long-lived) dark matter, produced thermally or otherwise. We propose a strategy
to distinguish between dark matter annihilation and/or decay in the case that a
clear signal is detected in gamma-ray observations of Milky Way dwarf
spheroidal galaxies with gamma-ray experiments. The sole measurement of the
energy spectrum of an indirect signal would render the discrimination between
these cases impossible. We show that by examining the dependence of the
intensity and energy spectrum on the angular distribution of the emission, the
origin could be identified as decay, annihilation, or both. In addition, once
the type of signal is established, we show how these measurements could help to
extract information about the dark matter properties, including mass,
annihilation cross section, lifetime, dominant annihilation and decay channels,
and the presence of substructure. Although an application of the approach
presented here would likely be feasible with current experiments only for very
optimistic dark matter scenarios, the improved sensitivity of upcoming
experiments could enable this technique to be used to study a wider range of

The Future of Our Seas: Marine scientists and creative professionals collaborate for science communication
To increase awareness of the current challenges facing the marine environment,
the Future of Our Seas (FOOS) project brought together the expertise of
scientists, public engagement experts and creatives to train and support a
group of marine scientists in effective science communication and innovative
public engagement. This case study aims to inspire scientists and artists to
use the FOOS approach in training, activity design and development support
(hereafter called the ‘FOOS programme’) to collaboratively deliver novel
and creative engagement activities. The authors reflect on the experiences
of the marine scientists: (1) attending the FOOS communication and
engagement training; (2) creating and delivering public engagement activities;
(3) understanding our audience; and (4) collaborating with artists. The authors
also share what the artists and audiences learned from participating in the
FOOS public engagement activities. These different perspectives provide new
insights for the field with respect to designing collaborative training which
maximizes the impact of the training on participants, creative collaborators and
the public. Long-term benefits of taking part in the FOOS programme, such as
initiating future collaborative engagement activities and positively impacting
the scientists’ research processes, are also highlighted
