    Cure kinetics of ring-opening metathesis polymerization of dicyclopentadiene

    The cure kinetics of polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD) prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization with three different concentrations of Grubbs' catalyst was examined using differential scanning calirimetry (DSC). The experimental data were used to test several different phenomenological kinetic models. The data are best modeled with a "model-free" isoconversional method. This analysis reveals that the activation energy increases significantly for degree of cure greater than 60%. Catalyst concentration is shown to have a large effect on the cure kinetics.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

    The Efficiency of Canadian Capital Markets: Some Bank of Canada Research

    Capital markets and their related financial instruments make an important contribution to the welfare of Canadians. The Bank of Canada is interested in the efficient functioning of capital markets through each of its responsibilities for monetary policy, the financial system, and funds management. Hendry and King highlight the key findings of Bank research published over the past year that addresses capital market efficiency and summarize lessons that have been learned. The research conducted thus far suggests that Canadian capital markets are efficient for a capital market of Canada's size but are less diverse than the U.S. capital markets, indicating that there is room for improvement in certain areas.capital market efficiency; Canada; bond; equity; foreign exchange; derivatives; securitization.

    In situ poly(urea-formaldehyde) microencapsulation of dicyclopentadiene

    Microencapsulated healing agents that possess adequate strength, long shelf-life, and excellent bonding to the host material are required for self-healing materials. Ureaformaldehyde microcapsules containing dicyclopentadiene were prepared by in situ polymerization in an oil-in-water emulsion that meet these requirements for self-healing epoxy. Microcapsules of 10-1000 ??m in diameter were produced by appropriate selection of agitation rate in the range of 200-2000 rpm. A linear relation exists between log(mean diameter) and log(agitation rate). Surface morphology and shell wall thickness were investigated by optical and electron microscopy. Microcapsules are composed of a smooth 160-220 nm inner membrane and a rough, porous outer surface of agglomerated urea-formaldehyde nanoparticles. Surface morphology is influenced by pH of the reacting emulsion and interfacial surface area at the core-water interface. High yields (80-90%) of a free flowing powder of spherical microcapsules were produced with a fill content of 83-92 wt% as determined by CHN analysis.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

    Understanding the effects of violent video games on violent crime

    Psychological studies invariably find a positive relationship between violent video game play and aggression. However, these studies cannot account for either aggressive effects of alternative activities video game playing substitutes for or the possible selection of relatively violent people into playing violent video games. That is, they lack external validity. We investigate the relationship between the prevalence of violent video games and violent crimes. Our results are consistent with two opposing effects. First, they support the behavioral effects as in the psychological studies. Second, they suggest a larger voluntary incapacitation effect in which playing either violent or non-violent games decrease crimes. Overall, violent video games lead to decreases in violent crime. --Video Games,Violence,Crime

    Phase boundaries in deterministic dense coding

    Full text link
    We consider dense coding with partially entangled states on bipartite systems of dimension d×dd\times d, studying the conditions under which a given number of messages, NN, can be deterministically transmitted. It is known that the largest Schmidt coefficient, λ0\lambda_0, must obey the bound λ0d/N\lambda_0\le d/N, and considerable empirical evidence points to the conclusion that there exist states satisfying λ0=d/N\lambda_0=d/N for every dd and NN except the special cases N=d+1N=d+1 and N=d21N=d^2-1. We provide additional conditions under which this bound cannot be reached -- that is, when it must be that λ0<d/N\lambda_0<d/N -- yielding insight into the shapes of boundaries separating entangled states that allow NN messages from those that allow only N1N-1. We also show that these conclusions hold no matter what operations are used for the encoding, and in so doing, identify circumstances under which unitary encoding is strictly better than non-unitary.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

    Muscle changes with eccentric exercise: Implications on earth and in space

    Get PDF
    Recent investigations of fluid pressure, morpholo gy, and enzyme activities of skeletal muscle exercised eccentrically or concentrically in normal human subjects are reviewed. Intramuscular pressures were measured before, during, and after submaximal exercise and correlated with subjective muscle soreness, fiber size, water content, and blood indices of muscle enzymes. High intensity eccentric exercise is characterized by post exercise pain, elevated intramuscular pressures, and swelling of both type 1 and 2 fibers as compared to concentric exercise. Thus, long periods of unaccustomed, high level eccentric contraction may cause muscle injury, fiber swelling, fluid accumulation, elevated intramuscular pressure, and delayed muscle soreness. Training regimens of progressively increasing eccentric exercise, however, cause less soreness and are extremely efficacious in increasing muscle mass and strength. It is proposed that on Earth, postural muscles are uniquely adapted to low levels of prolonged eccentric contraction that are absent during weightlessness. The almost complete absence of eccentric exercise in space may be an important contributor to muscle atrophy and therefore equipment should be designed to integrate eccentric contractions into exercise protocols for long-term spaceflight

    Flow transitions in two-dimensional foams

    Full text link
    For sufficiently slow rates of strain, flowing foam can exhibit inhomogeneous flows. The nature of these flows is an area of active study in both two-dimensional model foams and three dimensional foam. Recent work in three-dimensional foam has identified three distinct regimes of flow [S. Rodts, J. C. Baudez, and P. Coussot, Europhys. Lett. {\bf 69}, 636 (2005)]. Two of these regimes are identified with continuum behavior (full flow and shear-banding), and the third regime is identified as a discrete regime exhibiting extreme localization. In this paper, the discrete regime is studied in more detail using a model two dimensional foam: a bubble raft. We characterize the behavior of the bubble raft subjected to a constant rate of strain as a function of time, system size, and applied rate of strain. We observe localized flow that is consistent with the coexistence of a power-law fluid with rigid body rotation. As a function of applied rate of strain, there is a transition from a continuum description of the flow to discrete flow when the thickness of the flow region is approximately 10 bubbles. This occurs at an applied rotation rate of approximately 0.07s10.07 {\rm s^{-1}}
