    Comparing health status in Belarus between 2001-10: a novel method using surveys with different response categories

    Background: Two population surveys were conducted in Belarus: The Living Conditions, Lifestyle and Health (LLH) in 2001 (n=2000) and The Health in Times of Transition (HITT) in 2010 (n=1800). Each survey included a question on health status. The LLH questionnaire provided a 4-point Verbal Response Scale, but the HITT questionnaire used a 5-point scale. When translated into Russian, only two response categories of these scales had identical wording. These differences made a direct comparison of self-reported health status between 2001 and 2010 difficult. Methods: We conducted a Health Category Response Scale (HCRS) survey in 2010 (n=570) using a 100ths graduated Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to understand how the response categories of different scales are perceived by Russian speakers. We implemented the HCRS survey’s data to calculate the weighted health status (WHS) for each of the original surveys and to compare health status in Belarus between 2001 and 2010. Results: The WHS in Belarus showed a small, but statistically significant, improvement of 2.9 points on a 0–100 scale between 2001 and 2010 (56.2 vs. 59.1). Identical response categories were perceived differently on a 4-point and 5-point VAS. The category ‘good’ (‘Umomwee’) measured ~12 points higher, and the category ‘bad/poor’ (‘Ojmtme’) measured ~16 points lower, on the 4-point compared with the 5-point VAS. Conclusion: Our HCRS survey and novel method enabled a direct comparison of questions with different response options. When applied to the LLH and HITT projects, we concluded that health status in Belarus has improved between 2001 and 2010

    A ski robot system for qualitative modelling of the carved turn

    金沢大学理工研究域機械工学系A robot that simulates a number of human leg joint motions during carved turns has been developed. Each leg had six degrees of freedom like those of human athletes. An on-board computer controlled the sequence of joint angles in an open-loop mode during skiing on an artificial grass slope. The relations among joint motions, reacting forces and turn trajectory were investigated by programming various motions of the robot. At first, the effect of basic joint motions, such as abduction-adduction and flexion-extension of the hip, knee and ankle joints were investigated. Then the sequence of a top athlete\u27s joint motions, measured in a separate study, was applied to investigate its effect on the ski turn. The human-inspired programme produced a more even force balance between the skis and also a higher-quality turn. The requirements for a successful physical model of a human skier are discussed. © 2009 International Sports Engineering Association

    Anomalies of ac driven solitary waves with internal modes: Nonparametric resonances induced by parametric forces

    We study the dynamics of kinks in the ϕ4\phi^4 model subjected to a parametric ac force, both with and without damping, as a paradigm of solitary waves with internal modes. By using a collective coordinate approach, we find that the parametric force has a non-parametric effect on the kink motion. Specifically, we find that the internal mode leads to a resonance for frequencies of the parametric driving close to its own frequency, in which case the energy of the system grows as well as the width of the kink. These predictions of the collective coordinate theory are verified by numerical simulations of the full partial differential equation. We finally compare this kind of resonance with that obtained for non-parametric ac forces and conclude that the effect of ac drivings on solitary waves with internal modes is exactly the opposite of their character in the partial differential equation.Comment: To appear in Phys Rev

    Resonant transmission through an open quantum dot

    We have measured the low-temperature transport properties of a quantum dot formed in a one-dimensional channel. In zero magnetic field this device shows quantized ballistic conductance plateaus with resonant tunneling peaks in each transition region between plateaus. Studies of this structure as a function of applied perpendicular magnetic field and source-drain bias indicate that resonant structure deriving from tightly bound states is split by Coulomb charging at zero magnetic field.Comment: To be published in Phys.     Cosmological parameters from SDSS and WMAP

    We measure cosmological parameters using the three-dimensional power spectrum P(k) from over 200,000 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in combination with WMAP and other data. Our results are consistent with a ``vanilla'' flat adiabatic Lambda-CDM model without tilt (n=1), running tilt, tensor modes or massive neutrinos. Adding SDSS information more than halves the WMAP-only error bars on some parameters, tightening 1 sigma constraints on the Hubble parameter from h~0.74+0.18-0.07 to h~0.70+0.04-0.03, on the matter density from Omega_m~0.25+/-0.10 to Omega_m~0.30+/-0.04 (1 sigma) and on neutrino masses from <11 eV to <0.6 eV (95%). SDSS helps even more when dropping prior assumptions about curvature, neutrinos, tensor modes and the equation of state. Our results are in substantial agreement with the joint analysis of WMAP and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, which is an impressive consistency check with independent redshift survey data and analysis techniques. In this paper, we place particular emphasis on clarifying the physical origin of the constraints, i.e., what we do and do not know when using different data sets and prior assumptions. For instance, dropping the assumption that space is perfectly flat, the WMAP-only constraint on the measured age of the Universe tightens from t0~16.3+2.3-1.8 Gyr to t0~14.1+1.0-0.9 Gyr by adding SDSS and SN Ia data. Including tensors, running tilt, neutrino mass and equation of state in the list of free parameters, many constraints are still quite weak, but future cosmological measurements from SDSS and other sources should allow these to be substantially tightened.Comment: Minor revisions to match accepted PRD version.     Resonances in the dynamics of ϕ4\phi^4 kinks perturbed by ac forces

    We study the dynamics of ϕ4\phi^4 kinks perturbed by an ac force, both with and without damping. We address this issue by using a collective coordinate theory, which allows us to reduce the problem to the dynamics of the kink center and width. We carry out a careful analysis of the corresponding ordinary differential equations, of Mathieu type in the undamped case, finding and characterizing the resonant frequencies and the regions of existence of resonant solutions. We verify the accuracy of our predictions by numerical simulation of the full partial differential equation, showing that the collective coordinate prediction is very accurate. Numerical simulations for the damped case establish that the strongest resonance is the one at half the frequency of the internal mode of the kink. In the conclusion we discuss on the possible relevance of our results for other systems, especially the sine-Gordon equation. We also obtain additional results regarding the equivalence between different collective coordinate methods applied to this problem.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, REVTeX, accepted for publication in Phys.     The electron heating rate and ion chemistry in the thermosphere above Wallops Island during the solar eclipse of 7 March 1970

    An identical pair of thermosphere probes measured the N2 concentration and temperature, the ion composition and concentrations and the electron temperature up to 290 km about 30 min and 5 min before totality during the 7 March 1970 eclipse at Wallops Island. The rockets travelled similar trajectories thus permitting the purely temporal changes between nights to be resolved. The neutral temperature and N2 concentration changed little but the electron temperature decreased by as much as 20 per cent in the lower F-region. The ion concentration decreased by about 30 per cent in the F-region and about 50 per cent in the E-region, with little change in relative ion composition. The electron cooling rates decreased by a factor of 6 in the lower F-region, approximately in proportion to the change in visible solar disc. A smaller than expected decrease in the cooling rate below 150 km between the two flights indicates a hardening of the solar spectrum and suggests a significant heat contribution from the solar corona near totality. The ion composition measurements were consistent with solutions of the ion continuity equations. A proper fit required a factor of three enhancement of the flux below 200 A, an amount also consistent with the electron heat balance analysis. Reactions involving the minor ions N+ and N2+ were found to be important for the ion chemistry of the major ions O2+ and NO+, especially at the time of eclipse. The negligible response of the neutral atmosphere to the eclipse is reasonable considering the long time constants for the conductive and convective transport processes and the local nature of the disturbance.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/34133/1/0000417.pd

    A clinical risk score of myocardial fibrosis predicts adverse outcomes in aortic stenosis

    Aims Midwall myocardial fibrosis on cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is a marker of early ventricular decompensation and adverse outcomes in aortic stenosis (AS). We aimed to develop and validate a novel clinical score using variables associated with midwall fibrosis. Methods and results One hundred forty-seven patients (peak aortic velocity (Vmax) 3.9 [3.2,4.4] m/s) underwent CMR to determine midwall fibrosis (CMR cohort). Routine clinical variables that demonstrated significant association with midwall fibrosis were included in a multivariate logistic score. We validated the prognostic value of the score in two separate outcome cohorts of asymptomatic patients (internal: n = 127, follow-up 10.3 [5.7,11.2] years; external: n = 289, follow-up 2.6 [1.6,4.5] years). Primary outcome was a composite of AS-related events (cardiovascular death, heart failure, and new angina, dyspnoea, or syncope). The final score consisted of age, sex, Vmax, high-sensitivity troponin I concentration, and electrocardiographic strain pattern [c-statistic 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.78–0.91), P 57%). In the internal outcome cohort, AS-related event rates were >10-fold higher in high-risk patients compared with those at low risk (23.9 vs. 2.1 events/100 patient-years, respectively; log rank P < 0.001). Similar findings were observed in the external outcome cohort (31.6 vs. 4.6 events/100 patient-years, respectively; log rank P < 0.001). Conclusion We propose a clinical score that predicts adverse outcomes in asymptomatic AS patients and potentially identifies high-risk patients who may benefit from early valve replacement
