William Howard Taft was both our twenty-seventh president and the tenth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court -- the only person to have ever held both high positions in our country. He once famously commented that presidents may come and go, but the Supreme Court goes on forever (Pringle 1998). His remark reminds us that presidents serve only four-year terms (and are now limited to two of them), but justices of the Supreme court are appointed for life and leave a legacy of precedent-setting cases after departing the High Court. Of course, presidents also leave a legacy of important decisions, not the least of which being their appointment of federal judges. [excerpt
AIROscope: Ames infrared balloon-borne telescope
A balloon-borne telescope system designed for astronomical observations at infrared wavelengths is discussed. The telescope is gyro-stabilized with updated pointing information derived from television, star tracker, or ground commands. The television system furnishes both course and fine acquisition after initial orientation using a pair of fluxgate servo compasses. Command and control is by a UHF link with 256 commands available. Scientific and engineering data are telemetered to the ground station via narrow band F.M. in the L band. The ground station displays all scientific, engineering and status information during the flights and records the command and telemetry digital bit stream for detailed analysis. The AIROscope telescope has a 28-inch diameter primary mirror and Dall-Kirkham optics. The beam is modulated by oscillating a secondary mirror at 11 or 25 Hz with provision for left or right beam fixed positions by command

Remote sensing of intertidal morphological change in Morecambe Bay, U.K., between 1991 and 2007
Tidal Flats are important examples of extensive areas of natural environment that remain relatively unaffected by man. Monitoring of tidal flats is required for a variety of purposes. Remote sensing has become an established technique for the measurement of topography over tidal flats. A further requirement is to measure topographic changes in order to measure sediment budgets. To date there have been few attempts to make quantitative estimates of morphological change over tidal flat areas. This paper illustrates the use of remote sensing to measure quantitative and qualitative changes in the tidal flats of Morecambe Bay during the relatively long period 1991–2007. An understanding of the patterns of sediment transport within the Bay is of considerable interest for coastal management and defence purposes. Tidal asymmetry is considered to be the dominant cause of morphological change in the Bay, with the higher currents associated with the flood tide being the main agency moulding the channel system. Quantitative changes were measured by comparing a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the intertidal zone formed using the waterline technique applied to satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from 1991–1994, to a second DEM constructed from airborne laser altimetry data acquired in 2005. Qualitative changes were studied using additional SAR images acquired since 2003. A significant movement of sediment from below Mean Sea Level (MSL) to above MSL was detected by comparing the two Digital Elevation Models, though the proportion of this change that could be ascribed to seasonal effects was not clear. Between 1991 and 2004 there was a migration of the Ulverston channel of the river Leven north-east by about 5 km, followed by the development of a straighter channel to the west, leaving the previous channel decoupled from the river. This is thought to be due to independent tidal and fluvial forcing mechanisms acting on the channel. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of remote sensing for measurement of long-term morphological change in tidal flat areas. An alternative use of waterlines as partial bathymetry for assimilation into a morphodynamic model of the coastal zone is also discussed
Long-term Effects of Tillage on the Retention and Transport of Soil Water
Quantitative measurements were made of the physical and chemical properties of two virgin prairie soils, Crowley and Jay, that remain in their native Arkansas environments and of similar soils that had been tilled extensively. Comparisons were made of soil properties at several depths. When compared with the tilled soils the virgin soils had higher organic matter contents, saturated hydraulic conductivities and water retained at several applied pressures. Bulk densities and hydraulic resistances were lower in the virgin soils. For the Crowley silt loam, values of pH and elemental contents of the virgin soil were higher than those of the tilled soil. Determinations also were made of the effects of a 14-year addition of winter cover crops on a Dubbs-Dundee soil in continuous cotton production. In general, the winter cover crops tended to increase hydraulic conductivity~. ·porosity and organic matter content. These results indicated that the detrimental effects of long-term tillage on soil hydraulic properties could partially be overcome with the planting of these crops during the winter. However, the rate of improvement in the hydraulic properties was not dramatic
The dynamics of dark solitons in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas
We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the
Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We
derive an exact equation relating the phase jump across the soliton to its
energy, and hence obtain an expression for the soliton period. Our analytic
approach is supported by simulations of the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes
equations, which show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton
becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an
experimental protocol to test our predictions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Generalizations of the Abstract Boundary singularity theorem
The Abstract Boundary singularity theorem was first proven by Ashley and
Scott. It links the existence of incomplete causal geodesics in strongly
causal, maximally extended spacetimes to the existence of Abstract Boundary
essential singularities, i.e., non-removable singular boundary points. We give
two generalizations of this theorem: the first to continuous causal curves and
the distinguishing condition, the second to locally Lipschitz curves in
manifolds such that no inextendible locally Lipschitz curve is totally
imprisoned. To do this we extend generalized affine parameters from
curves to locally Lipschitz curves.Comment: 24 page
Quantum signatures of breather-breather interactions
The spectrum of the Quantum Discrete Nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on a
periodic 1D lattice shows some interesting detailed band structure which may be
interpreted as the quantum signature of a two-breather interaction in the
classical case. We show that this fine structure can be interpreted using
