Debiasing training transfers to improve decision making in the field
The primary objection to debiasing training interventions is a lack of evidence that they transfer to improve decision making in field settings, where reminders of bias are absent. We gave graduate students in three professional programs (N = 290) a one-shot training intervention that reduces confirmation bias in laboratory experiments. Natural variance in the training schedule assigned participants to receive training before or after solving an unannounced business case modeled on the decision to launch the Space Shuttle Challenger. We used case solutions to surreptitiously measure their susceptibility to confirmation bias. Trained participants were 29% less likely to choose the inferior hypothesis-confirming solution than untrained participants. Analysis of case write-ups suggests that a reduction in confirmatory hypothesis testing accounts for their improved decision making in the case. The results provide promising evidence that debiasing training effects transfer to field settings and can improve consequential decisions in professional and private life
Use of dipicolinate-based complexes for producing ion-imprinted polystyrene resins for the extraction of yttrium-90 and heavy lanthanide cations
Highly selective separation of yttrium (and lanthanides) is of interest for the design of radiopharmaceuticals, and an efficient method based on the ion-imprinting concept is proposed here. The synthesis and structural, thermodynamic and photophysical characterization of complexes of trivalent yttrium and lanthanides with two new vinyl derivatives of dipicolinic acid, HL1 and L2, are described. The feasibility of using ion-imprinted resins for yttrium and lanthanide separation is demonstrated. The resins were obtained by copolymerization with styrene and divinylbenzene and subsequent acid treatment to remove the metal ion. High-resolution Eu luminescence experiments revealed that the geometry of the complexation sites is well preserved in the imprinted polymers. The ion-imprinted polymer based on HL1 proved to be particularly well adapted for yttrium extraction, having a sizeable capacity (8.9 +- 0.2 g/mg resin) and a fast rate of extraction (t1/2 = 1.7 min). In addition, lighter and heavier lanthanide ions are separated. Finally, the resin displays high selectivity for yttrium and lanthanide cations against alkali and alkaline earth metals. For instance, in a typical experiment, 10 mg of yttrium was extracted from 5 g of milk ash sample by 2 g of the resin. The good separation properties displayed by the resin based on HL1 open interesting perspectives for the production of highly pure 90Y and radiolanthanides for medical applications, and for trace analysis of these radiochemicals in food and in the environment

Development of an inducible mouse model of iRFP713 to track recombinase activity and tumour development in vivo
While the use of bioluminescent proteins for molecular imaging is a powerful technology to further our understanding of complex processes, fluorescent labeling with visible light fluorescent proteins such as GFP and RFP suffers from poor tissue penetration and high background autofluorescence. To overcome these limitations, we generated an inducible knock-in mouse model of iRFP713. This model was used to assess Cre activity in a Rosa Cre-ER background and quantify Cre activity upon different tamoxifen treatments in several organs. We also show that iRFP can be readily detected in 3D organoid cultures, FACS analysis and in vivo tumour models. Taken together we demonstrate that iRFP713 is a progressive step in in vivo imaging and analysis that widens the optical imaging window to the near-infrared spectrum, thereby allowing deeper tissue penetration, quicker image acquisition without the need to inject substrates and a better signal to background ratio in genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs)
Comparative antiviral activity of integrase inhibitors in human monocyte-derived macrophages and lymphocytes
The activity of raltegravir and 4 other integrase inhibitors (MK-2048, L870,810,
IN2, and IN5) was investigated in primary human macrophages, PBMC and
C8166-lymphocytic T cells, in order to determine their relative potency and
efficacy in different cellular systems of HIV infection. Raltegravir showed
better protective efficacy in all cell types; MK-2048, L870,810 and IN5 showed a
potent anti-HIV-1 activity in macrophages, while in lymphocytes only MK-2048 and
L870,810 showed an inhibitory effect comparable to raltegravir. IN2 was a poorly
effective anti-HIV-1 compound in all cellular systems. All effective integrase
inhibitors exhibited a potent antiviral activity against both X4 and R5 HIV-1
strains. In general, raltegravir, MK-2048, L870,810 and IN5 showed anti HIV
activity similar or slightly higher in macrophages compared to PBMC and C8166 T
cells: for MK-2048, the EC(50) was 0.4, 0.9, 11.5nM in macrophages, in PBMCs and
T cells, respectively; for L870,810, the EC(50) was 1.5, 14.3, and 10.6nM,
respectively; for IN5 the EC(50) was 0.5, 13.7, and 5.7nM, respectively

Changing Style in Style-Changing Industries: The Role of Critics as Gatekeepers in High-End Fashion
Mastering aesthetics is a precious source of competitive advantage in creative industries. In fashion, innovation is reflected by how and how much styles change. Elite designers claim to be the only endogenous force shaping fashion innovation season by season. Yet, each season, fashion critics vet the new collections these designers introduce, assessing what is original as opposed toreworked and uninspired, in this way playing a fundamental role as gatekeepers in setting taste within the industry. In this research, we document how stylistic innovation, vis-`a-vis the styles premier design houses introduced each season, is impacted, among the others, by the specific exogenous force of critics’ assessments of designers’ past work. Our data, which include 61 measures detailing the styles introduced by 38 prestigious Italian and French design houses over a nine-year period, suggest designers move further away from styles reviewed less favourably while adhering more closely to styles reviewed more positively. Additionally, the styles a designer introduces are shown to depend on critical assessments of competing designers’ styles, revealing how design houses attend to each other’s work. This work documents the strong correlation between style dynamics and critics’ feedback. It also has important implications for any company trying to find a balance between independence and conformity in setting its own unique positioning into the market

Amperometric Biosensor and Front-End Electronics for Remote Glucose Monitoring by Crosslinked PEDOT-Glucose Oxidase
Focusing on the interplay between interface chemistry, electrochemistry, and integrated electronics, we show a novel low-cost and flexible biosensing platform for continuous glucose monitoring. The amperometric biosensing system features a planar three-electrode structure on a plastic substrate, and a wireless near-field communication-powered electronic system performing sensor analog front-end, A/D conversion, digital control, and display tasks. The working electrode is made of electropolymerized poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) film onto a polyethylene terephthalate/gold electrode followed by immobilization of cross-linked glucose oxidase by glutaraldehyde. The advantages offered by such a device, including low-cost materials and instrumentation as well as the good sensitivity of 9.24 \mu \text{A}/({\mathrm {mM}} \cdot {\mathrm {cm}}^{2}) are promising tools for point-of-care monitoring. Measurement, Consequences, and Debiasing of Correspondent Inference Making
Across consequential attributions of attitudes, ability, emotions, and morality, people make correspondent inferences-infer stable personality characteristics from others’ behavior, even when their behavior was caused by situational factors. We examined their structure and report the development and validation of an instrument measuring individual differences in the propensity to make correspondent inferences (the Neglect of External Demands-NED -scale). The instrument is internally consistent and distinct from measures of intelligence, cognitive ability, cognitive reflection, general decision making ability, preference for control, and attributional style. It predicted attributions of blame for accidental harm, the weight attributed to confessions obtained under coercion, the consideration of job difficulty in performance evaluations, and the ability to separate market and fund performance when making incentive-compatible investments.
