Motion of discrete interfaces in periodic media
We study the motion of discrete interfaces driven by ferromagnetic
interactions in a two-dimensional periodic environment by coupling the
minimizing movements approach by Almgren, Taylor and Wang and a
discrete-to-continuous analysis. The case of a homogeneous environment has been
recently treated by Braides, Gelli and Novaga, showing that the effective
continuous motion is a flat motion related to the crystalline perimeter
obtained by -convergence from the ferromagnetic energies, with an
additional discontinuous dependence on the curvature, giving in particular a
pinning threshold. In this paper we give an example showing that in general the
motion does not depend only on the -limit, but also on geometrical
features that are not detected in the static description. In particular we show
how the pinning threshold is influenced by the microstructure and that the
effective motion is described by a new homogenized velocity.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1407.694
Deposition and characterization of copper chalcopyrite based solar cells using electrochemical techniques
Cu(In,Ga)Se2 films were electrodeposited on molybdenum substrates from a single pH buffered bath and annealed in a reducing selenium atmosphere. The opto-electronic properties of the films were characterized using a potentiostatically- controlled three electrode setup and an electrolyte contact. Pulsed illumination was used to determine the carrier type and the speed of photoresponse. Chopped monochromatic illumination was used to measure photocurrent spectra. The electrodeposited copper chalcopyrite films were compared with films prepared by sputtering and spraying techniques
Helioseismic constraints to the central solar temperature and neutrino fluxes
The central solar temperature T and its uncertainties are calculated in helioseismologically-constrained solar models. From the best fit to the convective radius, density at the convective radius and seismically determined helium abundance the central temperature is found to be T=1.58x10^7 K, in excellent agreement with Standard Solar Models. Conservatively, we estimate that the accuracy of this determination is Delta T/T=1.4 %, better than that in SSM. Neutrino fluxes are calculated. The lower limit to the boron neutrino flux, obtained with maximum reduction factors from all sources of uncertainties, is 2 sigma higher than the flux measured recently by SuperKamiokande

A compilation of charged-particle induced thermonuclear reaction rates
Low-energy cross section data for 86 charged-particle induced reactions involving light (1 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 14), mostly stable, nuclei are compiled. The corresponding Maxwellian-averaged thermonuclear reaction rates of relevance in astrophysical plasmas at temperatures in the range from 10(6) K to 10(10) K are calculated. These evaluations assume either that the target nuclei are in their ground state, or that the target states are thermally populated following a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, except in some cases involving isomeric states. Adopted values complemented with lower and upper limits of the rates are presented in tabular form. Analytical approximations to the adopted rates, as well as to the inverse/direct rate ratios, are provided. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
An Easy and Efficient Method for Native and Immunoreactive Echinococcus granulosus Antigen 5 Enrichment from Hydatid Cyst Fluid
Background: Currently, the serodiagnosis of cystic echinococcosis relies mostly on crude Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst fluid as the antigen. Consequently, available immunodiagnostic tests lack standardization of the target antigen and, in turn, this is reflected on poor sensitivity and specificity of the serological diagnosis.
Methodology/Principal Findings: Here, a chromatographic method enabling the generation of highly enriched Antigen 5 (Ag5) is described. The procedure is very easy, efficient and reproducible, since different hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) sources produced very similar chromatograms, notwithstanding the clearly evident and extreme heterogeneity of the starting material. In addition, the performance of the antigen preparation in immunological assays was preliminarily assessed by western immunoblotting and ELISA on a limited panel of cystic echinococcosis patients and healthy controls. Following western immunoblotting and ELISA experiments, a high reactivity of patient sera was seen, with unambiguous and highly specific results.
Conclusions/Significance: The methods and results reported open interesting perspectives for the development of sensitive diagnostic tools to enable the timely and unambiguous detection of cystic echinococcosis antibodies in patient sera. This work was supported by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna (http://www.regione.sardegna.it/)Pubblicat
Environmental Acidification Drives S. pyogenes Pilus Expression and Microcolony Formation on Epithelial Cells in a FCT-Dependent Manner
Group A Streptococcus (GAS, Streptococcus pyogenes) is a Gram-positive human pathogen responsible for a diverse variety of diseases, including pharyngitis, skin infections, invasive necrotizing fasciitis and autoimmune sequelae. We have recently shown that GAS cell adhesion and biofilm formation is associated with the presence of pili on the surface of these bacteria. GAS pilus proteins are encoded in the FCT (Fibronectin- Collagen-T antigen) genomic region, of which nine different variants have been identified so far. In the present study we undertook a global analysis of GAS isolates representing the majority of FCT-variants to investigate the effect of environmental growth conditions on their capacity to form multicellular communities. For FCT-types 2, 3, 5 and 6 and a subset of FCT-4 strains, we observed that acidification resulting from fermentative sugar metabolism leads to an increased ability of the bacteria to form biofilm on abiotic surfaces and microcolonies on epithelial cells. The higher biofilm forming capacity at low environmental pH was directly associated with an enhanced expression of the genes encoding the pilus components and of their transcription regulators. The data indicate that environmental pH affects the expression of most pilus types and thereby the formation of multicellular cell-adhering communities that assist the initial steps of GAS infection
STREGA@VST: Structure and Evolution of the Galaxy
STREGA (STRucture and Evolution of the Galaxy) is an ongoing VLT Survey Telescope Guaranteed Time survey, aimed at investigating the mechanisms of formation and evolution of the Galactic Halo on an area of about 150 square degrees. The core programme searches for the signatures of interaction between selected stellar systems and the Galactic Halo and a complementary part is focussed on exploring the southern portion of the Fornax Stream. The adopted stellar tracers are variable stars and main sequence turn-off stars. We present an overview of the survey, the first results, and the perspectives
