    The SESAMI evaluation of employment support in the UK: background and baseline data

    Aims: This study evaluates real world employment support for people with severe mental health problems in the UK. Given a policy context which promotes social inclusion and welfare to work, we wanted to find out about typical employment services and their effects on people with mental health problems. Method: A case study design was adopted, incorporating qualitative and quantitative interviews with staff and users of each service. After screening for severity, 182 individuals met our inclusion criteria for current use of the services. They were interviewed about their current engagement with support services, their employment and job satisfaction if employed. Measures of self esteem, hope/optimism and job satisfaction were taken as outcomes. Results: We report here associations between the outcome measures and: current working status; support from the agency; and demographic features at baseline. People who were working had higher outcome scores than those who were in work preparation or training. People working with support had higher job satisfaction. Conclusions: The study highlights the methodological issues raised by doing real world research. These findings were generated by heterogeneous interventions in non-experimental settings. Despite this, they tend to support previous evidence in favour of early placement and ongoing support in work

    Six-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories, quantum cohomology of instanton moduli spaces and gl(N) Quantum Intermediate Long Wave Hydrodynamics

    We show that the exact partition function of U(N) six-dimensional gauge theory with eight supercharges on \u21022 7 S 2 provides the quantization of the integrable system of hydrodynamic type known as gl(N) periodic Intermediate Long Wave (ILW). We characterize this system as the hydrodynamic limit of elliptic Calogero-Moser integrable system. We compute the Bethe equations from the effective gauged linear sigma model on S 2 with target space the ADHM instanton moduli space, whose mirror computes the Yang-Yang function of gl(N) ILW. The quantum Hamiltonians are given by the local chiral ring observables of the six-dimensional gauge theory. As particular cases, these provide the gl(N) Benjamin-Ono and Korteweg-de Vries quantum Hamiltonians. In the four dimensional limit, we identify the local chiral ring observables with the conserved charges of Heisenberg plus W N algebrae, thus providing a gauge theoretical proof of AGT correspondence. \ua9 2014 The Author(s)

    The stringy instanton partition function

    We perform an exact computation of the gauged linear sigma model associated to a D1-D5 brane system on a resolved A 1 singularity. This is accomplished via supersymmetric localization on the blown-up two-sphere. We show that in the blow-down limit the partition function reduces to the Nekrasov partition function evaluating the equivariant volume of the instanton moduli space. For finite radius we obtain a tower of world-sheet instanton corrections, that we identify with the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of the ADHM moduli space. We show that these corrections can be encoded in a deformation of the Seiberg-Witten prepotential. From the mathematical viewpoint, the D1-D5 system under study displays a twofold nature: the D1-branes viewpoint captures the equivariant quantum cohomology of the ADHM instanton moduli space in the Givental formalism, and the D5-branes viewpoint is related to higher rank equivariant Donaldson-Thomas invariants

    A phase I/II study of intrathecal idursulfase-IT in children with severe mucopolysaccharidosis II

    Approximately two-thirds of patients with the lysosomal storage disease mucopolysaccharidosis II have progressive cognitive impairment. Intravenous (i.v.) enzyme replacement therapy does not affect cognitive impairment because recombinant iduronate-2-sulfatase (idursulfase) does not penetrate the blood-brain barrier at therapeutic concentrations. We examined the safety of idursulfase formulated for intrathecal administration (idursulfase-IT) via intrathecal drug delivery device (IDDD). A secondary endpoint was change in concentration of glycosaminoglycans in cerebrospinal fluid. Sixteen cognitively impaired males with mucopolysaccharidosis II who were previously treated with weekly i.v. idursulfase 0.5 mg/kg for ≥6 months were enrolled. Patients were randomized to no treatment or 10-mg, 30-mg, or 1-mg idursulfase-IT monthly for 6 months (four patients per group) while continuing i.v. idursulfase weekly. No serious adverse events related to idursulfase-IT were observed. Surgical revision/removal of the IDDD was required in 6 of 12 patients. Twelve total doses were administrated by lumbar puncture. Mean cerebrospinal fluid glycosaminoglycan concentration was reduced by approximately 90% in the 10-mg and 30-mg groups and approximately 80% in the 1-mg group after 6 months. These preliminary data support further development of investigational idursulfase-IT in MPS II patients with the severe phenotype who have progressed only to a mild-to-moderate level of cognitive impairment.Genet Med advance online publication 02 April 2015Genetics in Medicine (2015); doi:10.1038/gim.2015.36

    We elucidate the relation between Painlev\'e equations and four-dimensional rank one N=2 theories by identifying the connection associated to Painlev\'e isomonodromic problems with the oper limit of the flat connection of the Hitchin system associated to gauge theories and by studying the corresponding renormalisation group flow. Based on this correspondence we provide long-distance expansions at various canonical rays for all Painlev\'e functions in terms of magnetic and dyonic Nekrasov partition functions for N=2 SQCD and Argyres-Douglas theories at self-dual Omega background \u3f51+\u3f52=0, or equivalently in terms of c=1 irregular conformal blocks
