    A numerical model for predicting bubble formation in a 3D fluidized bed

    AbstractFluidized bed systems have the potential to be widely used in the power generation, mineral processing and chemical industries. One factor limiting their increased use is the lack of adequate design techniques for scaling such systems. A model has been developed for simulating gas–solid fluidized bed plant. The model uses a multiphase Eulerian–Eulerian technique to predict the transient behaviour of fluidized bed systems. The commercial CFD code CFX is used as the computational framework for solving the discretized equations. To overcome the problem of accurate geometrical representation experienced in previous models a body fitted grid system is employed. The model is used to predict isothermal flow in a three-dimensional bubbling fluidized bed. Predictions of the three-dimensional model show bubble formation with gas bubbles or voids preferentially moving along the centre of the bed. Predicted behaviour is qualitatively consistent with experimental observations

    Oblique DLCQ M-theory and Multiple M2-branes

    We propose an oblique DLCQ as a limit to realize a theory of multiple M2-branes in M(atrix)-theory context. The limit is a combination of an infinite boosting of a space-like circle and a tuned tilting of the circle direction. We obtain a series of supergravity solutions describing various dual configurations including multiple M2-branes. For an infinite boosting along a circle wrapped obliquely around a rectangular torus, Seiberg's DLCQ limit distorts the torus modulus. In the context of supergravity, we show explicitly how this torus modulus of M~\widetilde{\text M}-theory is realized as the vacuum modulus of dual IIB-theory.Comment: v3: 25pages, extended version, References adde

    S-Duality at the Black Hole Threshold in Gravitational Collapse

    We study gravitational collapse of the axion/dilaton field in classical low energy string theory, at the threshold for black hole formation. A new critical solution is derived that is spherically symmetric and continuously self-similar. The universal scaling and echoing behavior discovered by Choptuik in gravitational collapse appear in a somewhat different form. In particular, echoing takes the form of SL(2,R) rotations (cf. S-duality).     N=3 Warped Compactifications

    Orientifolds with three-form flux provide some of the simplest string examples of warped compactification. In this paper we show that some models of this type have the unusual feature of D=4, N=3 spacetime supersymmetry. We discuss their construction and low energy physics.     A simplified version of 3d BL theory is considered, which allows any number N of M2 branes in d=11. The underlying 3-algebra structure is provided by degenerate U(N) Nambu bracket [X,Y,Z] = tr(X) [Y,Z] + tr(Y) [Z,X] + tr(Z) [X,Y], the corresponding f^{abcd} is not totally antisymmetric and extended supersymmetry of the action remains to be checked. All the fields, including auxiliary non-propagating gauge fields, are in adjoint representation of SU(N) and the only remnant of 3-algebra structure is an octuple of gauge singlets, acquiring vacuum expectation value in transition to D2 branes in d=10.Comment: 12 page

    Introduction to M Theory and AdS/CFT Duality

    An introductory survey of some of the developments that have taken place in superstring theory in the past few years is presented. The main focus is on three particular dualities. The first one is the appearance of an 11th dimension in the strong coupling limit of the type IIA theory, which give rise to M theory. The second one is the duality between the type IIB theory compactified on a circle and M theory on a two-torus.     Dynamics of Inner Galactic Disks: The Striking Case of M100

    We investigate gas dynamics in the presence of a double inner Lindblad resonance within a barred disk galaxy. Using an example of a prominent spiral, M100, we reproduce the basic central morphology, including four dominant regions of star formation corresponding to the compression maxima in the gas. These active star forming sites delineate an inner boundary (so-called nuclear ring) of a rather broad oval detected in the near infrared. We find that inclusion of self-gravitational effects in the gas is necessary in order to understand its behavior in the vicinity of the resonances and its subsequent evolution. The self-gravity of the gas is also crucial to estimate the effect of a massive nuclear ring on periodic orbits in the stellar bar.Comment: 11 pages, postscript, compressed, uuencoded.     Quadrupole Instabilities of Relativistic Rotating Membranes

    We generalize recent study of the stability of isotropic (spherical) rotating membranes to the anisotropic ellipsoidal membrane. We find that while the stability persists for deformations of spin l=1l=1, the quadrupole and higher spin deformations (l≥2l\geq 2) lead to instabilities. We find the relevant instability modes and the corresponding eigenvalues. These indicate that the ellipsoidal rotating membranes generically decay into finger-like configurations.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
