    Microchip Isoelectric Focusing Applications

    This review summarizes all available publications on isoelectric focusing carried out on planar microfabricated devices. Characteristic features of microchip isoelectric focusing (MC-IEF), such as resolution independence of separation length and compression of pH gradient, are discussed. An overview of materials used for microchip fabrication and developed detection strategies is given. Accomplishments in on-chip coupling of MC-IEF with other electrophoretic separation techniques or with mass spectrometry are briefly described. The review ends with alternative approaches to MC-IEF separation in terms of unusual sample introduction, kinds of support used for IEF separation, and in manner in which the pH gradient is generated

    A survey of chiropractors practicing in Germany: practice characteristics, professional reading habits, and attitudes and perceptions toward research

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In 2004, a survey conducted by the European Chiropractor's Union among member countries reported that "there appears to be little interest in research among chiropractors in Germany." However, no research has tested this statement. The objective of this study was to explore the attitudes and perceptions of practicing chiropractors in Germany regarding research, to look at their reading and research habits, and to gather demographic and practice data.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A questionnaire was developed and distributed among participants at a seminar held by the German Chiropractors' Association in 2005. The questionnaire was mailed to any members of the association who did not attend the seminar.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 49 (72%) of 68 distributed questionnaires were returned. Forty-five (92%) respondents stated they would support research efforts in Germany and 15 (31%) declared interest in participating in practiced based research. An average of three hours per week were reportedly spent reading scientific literature by 44 (85%) respondents. However, few journals listed by respondents were peer-reviewed and indexed; most were newsletters of chiropractic organizations or free publications. Most participants agreed on the importance of research for the profession, but when asked about the most pressing issue for chiropractic in Germany, legislation and recognition of the profession were the dominant themes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of this survey show that there is a general interest in supporting and participating in research activities among chiropractors practicing in Germany. Next steps could consist of educating practitioners about the resources available to read and interpret the scientific literature and thus further the understanding of research.</p

    Sp(4,R)/GL(2,R) Matrix Structure of Geodesic Solutions for Einstein--Maxwell--Dilaton--Axion Theory

    The constructed Sp(4,R)/GL(2,R)Sp(4,R)/GL(2,R) matrix operator defines the family of isotropic geodesic containing vacuum point lines in the target space of the stationary D=4 Einstein--Maxwell--dilaton--axion theory. This operator is used to derive a class of solutions which describes a point center system with nontrivial values of mass, parameter NUT, as well as electric, magnetic, dilaton and axion charges.     On Chern-Simons Quivers and Toric Geometry

    We discuss a class of 3-dimensional N=4 Chern-Simons (CS) quiver gauge models obtained from M-theory compactifications on singular complex 4-dimensional hyper-Kahler (HK) manifolds, which are realized explicitly as a cotangent bundle over two-Fano toric varieties V^2. The corresponding CS gauge models are encoded in quivers similar to toric diagrams of V^2.     Artificial intelligence-based detection of pneumonia in chest radiographs

    Artificial intelligence is gaining increasing relevance in the field of radiology. This study retrospectively evaluates how a commercially available deep learning algorithm can detect pneumonia in chest radiographs (CR) in emergency departments. The chest radiographs of 948 patients with dyspnea between 3 February and 8 May 2020, as well as 15 October and 15 December 2020, were used. A deep learning algorithm was used to identify opacifications associated with pneumonia, and the performance was evaluated by using ROC analysis, sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV. Two radiologists assessed all enrolled images for pulmonal infection patterns as the reference standard. If consolidations or opacifications were present, the radiologists classified the pulmonal findings regarding a possible COVID-19 infection because of the ongoing pandemic. The AUROC value of the deep learning algorithm reached 0.923 when detecting pneumonia in chest radiographs with a sensitivity of 95.4%, specificity of 66.0%, PPV of 80.2% and NPV of 90.8%. The detection of COVID-19 pneumonia in CR by radiologists was achieved with a sensitivity of 50.6% and a specificity of 73%. The deep learning algorithm proved to be an excellent tool for detecting pneumonia in chest radiographs. Thus, the assessment of suspicious chest radiographs can be purposefully supported, shortening the turnaround time for reporting relevant findings and aiding early triage

    Clonal spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius in Europe and North America: an international multicentre study

    Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) and to examine the clonal distribution in Europe and North America. Methods A total of 103 MRSP isolates from dogs isolated from several countries in Europe, the USA and Canada were characterized. Isolates were identified by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by broth dilution or gradient diffusion, and antimicrobial resistance genes were detected using a microarray. Genetic diversity was assessed by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), PFGE and spa typing. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) elements were characterized by multiplex PCR. Results Thirteen different sequence types (STs), 18 PFGE types and 8 spa types were detected. The hybrid SCCmec element II-III described in a MRSP isolate was present in 75 (72.8%) isolates. The remaining isolates either had SCCmec type III (n = 2), IV (n = 6), V (n = 14) or VII-241 (n = 4) or were non-typeable (n = 2). The most common genotypes were ST71(MLST)-J(PFGE)-t02(spa)-II-III(SCCmec) (56.3%) and ST68-C-t06-V (12.6%). In addition to mecA-mediated β-lactam resistance, isolates showed resistance to trimethoprim [dfr(G)] (90.3%), gentamicin/kanamycin [aac(6′)-Ie-aph(2′)-Ia] (88.3%), kanamycin [aph(3′)-III] (90.3%), streptomycin [ant(6′)-Ia] (90.3%), streptothricin (sat4) (90.3%), macrolides and/or lincosamides [erm(B), lnu(A)] (89.3%), fluoroquinolones (87.4%), tetracycline [tet(M) and/or tet(K)] (69.9%), chloramphenicol (catpC221) (57.3%) and rifampicin (1.9%). Conclusions Two major clonal MRSP lineages have disseminated in Europe (ST71-J-t02-II-III) and North America (ST68-C-t06-V). Regardless of their geographical or clonal origin, the isolates displayed resistance to the major classes of antibiotics used in veterinary medicine and thus infections caused by MRSP isolates represent a serious therapeutic challeng
