Transition to superfluid turbulence governed by an intrinsic parameter
Hydrodynamic flow in both classical and quantum fluids can be either laminar
or turbulent. To describe the latter, vortices in turbulent flow are modelled
with stable vortex filaments. While this is an idealization in classical
fluids, vortices are real topologically stable quantized objects in
superfluids. Thus superfluid turbulence is thought to hold the key to new
understanding on turbulence in general. The fermion superfluid 3He offers
further possibilities owing to a large variation in its hydrodynamic
characteristics over the experimentally accessible temperatures. While studying
the hydrodynamics of the B phase of superfluid 3He, we discovered a sharp
transition at 0.60Tc between two regimes, with regular behaviour at
high-temperatures and turbulence at low-temperatures. Unlike in classical
fluids, this transition is insensitive to velocity and occurs at a temperature
where the dissipative vortex damping drops below a critical limit. This
discovery resolves the conflict between existing high- and low-temperature
measurements in 3He-B: At high temperatures in rotating flow a vortex loop
injected into superflow has been observed to expand monotonically to a single
rectilinear vortex line, while at very low temperatures a tangled network of
quantized vortex lines can be generated in a quiescent bath with a vibrating
wire. The solution of this conflict reveals a new intrinsic criterion for the

Supersymmetric Deformations of Maximally Supersymmetric Gauge Theories
We study supersymmetric and super Poincar\'e invariant deformations of
ten-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory and of its dimensional reductions. We
describe all infinitesimal super Poincar\'e invariant deformations of equations
of motion of ten-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory and its reduction to a
point; we discuss the extension of them to formal deformations. Our methods are
based on homological algebra, in particular, on the theory of L-infinity and
A-infinity algebras. The exposition of this theory as well as of some basic
facts about Lie algebra homology and Hochschild homology is given in

Breastfeeding and maternal cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes:A systematic review
There is growing evidence that breastfeeding has short- and long-term cardiovascular health benefits for mothers. The objectives of this systematic review were to examine the association between breastfeeding and maternal cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes that have not previously been synthesized systematically, including metabolic syndrome, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.This systematic review meets PRISMA guidelines. The MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases were systematically searched for relevant publications of any study design from the earliest publication date to March 2016. The reference lists from selected articles were reviewed, and forward and backward referencing were conducted. The methodological quality of reviewed articles was appraised using validated checklists. Twenty-one studies meeting the inclusion criteria examined the association between self-reported breastfeeding and one or more of the following outcomes: metabolic syndrome/metabolic risk factors (n = 10), inflammatory markers/adipokines (n = 2), hypertension (n = 7), subclinical cardiovascular disease (n = 2), prevalence/incidence of cardiovascular disease (n = 3) and cardiovascular disease mortality (n = 2). Overall, 19 studies (10 cross-sectional/retrospective, 9 prospective) reported significant protective effects of breastfeeding, nine studies (3 cross-sectional/retrospective, 5 prospective, 1 cluster randomized controlled trial) reported non-significant findings and none reported detrimental effects of breastfeeding. In most studies reporting significant associations, breastfeeding remained associated with both short- and long-term maternal cardiovascular health risk factors/outcomes, even after covariate adjustment. Findings from several studies suggested that the effects of breastfeeding may diminish with age and a dose-response association between breastfeeding and several metabolic risk factors. However, further longitudinal studies, including studies that measure exclusive breastfeeding, are needed to confirm these findings.The evidence from this review suggests that breastfeeding is associated with cardiovascular health benefits. However, results should be interpreted with caution as the evidence gathered for each individual outcome was limited by the small number of observational studies. A behavioral comparison of male and female adults with high functioning autism spectrum conditions
Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) affect more males than females in the general population. However, within ASC it is unclear if there are phenotypic sex differences. Testing for similarities and differences between the sexes is important not only for clinical assessment but also has implications for theories of typical sex differences and of autism. Using cognitive and behavioral measures, we investigated similarities and differences between the sexes in age- and IQ-matched adults with ASC (high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome). Of the 83 (45 males and 38 females) participants, 62 (33 males and 29 females) met Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) cut-off criteria for autism in childhood and were included in all subsequent analyses. The severity of childhood core autism symptoms did not differ between the sexes. Males and females also did not differ in self-reported empathy, systemizing, anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive traits/symptoms or mentalizing performance. However, adult females with ASC showed more lifetime sensory symptoms (p = 0.036), fewer current socio-communication difficulties (p = 0.001), and more self-reported autistic traits (p = 0.012) than males. In addition, females with ASC who also had developmental language delay had lower current performance IQ than those without developmental language delay (p<0.001), a pattern not seen in males. The absence of typical sex differences in empathizing-systemizing profiles within the autism spectrum confirms a prediction from the extreme male brain theory. Behavioral sex differences within ASC may also reflect different developmental mechanisms between males and females with ASC. We discuss the importance of the superficially better socio-communication ability in adult females with ASC in terms of why females with ASC may more often go under-recognized, and receive their diagnosis later, than males
Spacelike Singularities and Hidden Symmetries of Gravity
We review the intimate connection between (super-)gravity close to a
spacelike singularity (the "BKL-limit") and the theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody
algebras. We show that in this limit the gravitational theory can be
reformulated in terms of billiard motion in a region of hyperbolic space,
revealing that the dynamics is completely determined by a (possibly infinite)
sequence of reflections, which are elements of a Lorentzian Coxeter group. Such
Coxeter groups are the Weyl groups of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras,
suggesting that these algebras yield symmetries of gravitational theories. Our
presentation is aimed to be a self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the
subject, with all the relevant mathematical background material introduced and
explained in detail. We also review attempts at making the infinite-dimensional
symmetries manifest, through the construction of a geodesic sigma model based
on a Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra. An explicit example is provided for the case
of the hyperbolic algebra E10, which is conjectured to be an underlying
symmetry of M-theory. Illustrations of this conjecture are also discussed in

A survey of knowledge, attitudes and practice of emergency contraception among university students in Cameroon
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Unsafe abortion is a major public health problem in low-and-middle income countries. Young and unmarried women constitute a high risk group for unsafe abortions. It has been estimated that widespread use of emergency contraception may significantly reduce the number of abortion-related morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and experiences on emergency contraceptive pills by the university students in Cameroon in order to develop and refine a national health programme for reducing unwanted pregnancies and their associated morbidity and mortality.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A convenient sample of 700 students of the University of Buea (Cameroon) was selected for the study. Data was collected by a self-administered, anonymous and pre-tested questionnaire.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The response rate was 94.9% (664/700). General level of awareness of emergency contraceptive pills was 63.0% (418/664). However, knowledge of the general features of emergency contraceptive pills was low and misinformation was high among these students. Knowledge differed according to the source of information: informal source was associated with misinformation, while medical and informational sources were associated with better knowledge. Although the students generally had positive attitudes regarding emergency contraceptive pills, up to 65.0% (465/664) believed that emergency contraceptive pills were unsafe. Those with adequate knowledge generally showed favourable attitudes with regards to emergency contraceptive pills (Mann-Whitney U = 2592.5, p = 0.000). Forty-nine students (7.4%) had used emergency contraceptive pills themselves or had a partner who had used them.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Awareness of emergency contraception pills by Cameroonian students is low and the method is still underused. Strategies to promote use of emergency contraception should be focused on spreading accurate information through medical and informational sources, which have been found to be reliable and associated with good knowledge on emergency contraceptive pills.</p
Caste-specific demography and phenology in bumblebees; modelling BeeWalk data
We present novel dynamic mixture models for the monitoring of bumblebee populations on an
unprecedented geographical scale, motivated by the UK citizen science scheme BeeWalk. The models
allow us for the First time to estimate bumblebee phenology and within-season productivity, defined as
the number of individuals in each caste per colony in the population in that year, from citizen science
data. All of these parameters are estimated separately for each caste, giving a means of considerable
ecological detail in examining temporal changes in the complex life-cycle of a social insect in the wild.
Due to the dynamic nature of the models, we are able to produce population trends for a number of
UK bumblebee species using the available time-series. Via an additional simulation exercise, we show
the extent to which useful information will increase if the survey continues, and expands in scale,
as expected. Bumblebees are extraordinarily important components of the ecosystem, providing
pollination services of vast economic impact and functioning as indicator species for changes in climate
or land-use. Our results demonstrate the changes in both phenology and productivity between years
and provide an invaluable tool for monitoring bumblebee populations, many of which are in decline,
in the UK and around the world
