    uvbyCa H beta CCD Photometry of Clusters. VII. The Intermediate-Age Anticenter Cluster Melotte 71

    CCD photometry on the intermediate-band uvbyCa H beta system is presented for the anticenter, intermediate-age open cluster, Melotte 71. Restricting the data to probable single members of the cluster using the color-magnitude diagram and the photometric indices alone generates a sample of 48 F dwarfs on the unevolved main sequence. The average E(b-y) = 0.148 +/- 0.003 (s.e.m.) or E(B-V) = 0.202 +/- 0.004 (s.e.m.), where the errors refer to internal errors alone. With this reddening, [Fe/H] is derived from both m1 and hk, using H beta and b-y as the temperature index, with excellent agreement among the four approaches and a final weighted average of [Fe/H] = -0.17 +/- 0.02 (s.e.m.) for the cluster, on a scale where the Hyades has [Fe/H] = +0.12. When adjusted for the higher reddening estimate, the previous metallicity estimates from Washington photometry and from spectroscopy are now in agreement with the intermediate-band result. From comparisons to isochrones of appropriate metallicity, the cluster age and distance are determined as 0.9 +/- 0.1 Gyr and (m-M) = 12.2 +/- 0.1 or (m-M)_0 = 11.6 +/- 0.1. At this distance from the sun, Mel 71 has a galactocentric distance of 10.0 kpc on a scale where the sun is 8.5 kpc from the galactic center.     It is the year 2025. During the past 20 years, internal medicine as a discipline continued to become less prestigious, less respected, and more fragmented. As fewer medical students chose internal medicine as a career, residency programs began to close. Those that remained open filled with fewer graduates of US medical schools but filled with more US citizens who graduated from international medical schools, more graduates of osteopathic medical schools, and more foreign graduates of international medical schools. Due to lack of adequate remuneration and a shift of primary care provision from generalist physicians to nurse practitioners and physician assistants, training in general internal medicine as a patient care specialty ceased. Generalist internal medicine careers have been replaced by tracks designed to foster health services research or academic careers; internal medicine training graduates subspecialty physicians. Although the projected collapse of Medicare in 2019 was avoided, severe cuts in federal funding for undergraduate and graduate medical education programs forced medical schools and residency programs to compete for federal funds. As a result, medical school tuition became prohibitive, for-profit health care systems viewed medical education as a significant cost center and chose to limit the size of their residency programs, and community-based training programs could not withstand the financial pressures and closed. The result was a reduced supply of internists. Furthermore, compliance with the regulatory burden imposed by accrediting organizations—such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education—drove individuals from sustained careers in education, further impacting the viability of training programs

    vbyCaHbeta CCD Photometry of Clusters. VI. The Metal-Deficient Open Cluster NGC 2420

    CCD photometry on the intermediate-band vbyCaHbeta system is presented for the metal-deficient open cluster, NGC 2420. Restricting the data to probable single members of the cluster using the CMD and the photometric indices alone generates a sample of 106 stars at the cluster turnoff. The average E(b-y) = 0.03 +/- 0.003 (s.e.m.) or E(B-V) = 0.050 +/- 0.004 (s.e.m.), where the errors refer to internal errors alone. With this reddening, [Fe/H] is derived from both m1 and hk, using b-y and Hbeta as the temperature index. The agreement among the four approaches is reasonable, leading to a final weighted average of [Fe/H] = -0.37 +/- 0.05 (s.e.m.) for the cluster, on a scale where the Hyades has [Fe/H] = +0.12. When combined with the abundances from DDO photometry and from recalibrated low-resolution spectroscopy, the mean metallicity becomes [Fe/H] = -0.32 +/- 0.03. It is also demonstrated that the average cluster abundances based upon either DDO data or low-resolution spectroscopy are consistently reliable to 0.05 dex or better, contrary to published attempts to establish an open cluster metallicity scale using simplistic offset corrections among different surveys.Comment: scheduled for Jan. 2006 AJ; 33 pages, latex, includes 7 figures and 2 table

    Scattered Light Models of Protostellar Envelopes: Multiple Outflow Cavities and Misaligned Circumstellar Disks

    Ground based imaging, imaging polarimetry, and recent Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images of protostars have revealed very complex scattered light patterns that cannot be entirely explained by 2-D radiation transfer models. We present here for the first time radiation transfer models of T Tau and IRAS 04016+2610 that are fully 3-D, with the aim of investigating the effects on image morphology of multiple illuminating sources and infalling envelopes that have been shaped by multiple outflows. For T Tau we have constructed scattered light models where the illumination of the surrounding envelope is by a binary with each source surrounded by its own small circumstellar disk or envelope. We find that the asymmetries in the WFPC2 image of T Tau can be reproduced if the disks in the binary system are misaligned, consistent with a recently discovered bipolar outflow believed to originate from the secondary. For IRAS 04016+2610 we find that the observed scattered light pattern can be reproduced by scattering in an envelope with cavities carved by two sets of bipolar outflows, suggestive of an embedded binary system.Comment: ApJ Accepte

    Ab-initio study of model guanine assemblies: The role of pi-pi coupling and band transport

    Several assemblies of guanine molecules are investigated by means of first-principle calculations. Such structures include stacked and hydrogen-bonded dimers, as well as vertical columns and planar ribbons, respectively, obtained by periodically replicating the dimers. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data for isolated molecules, isolated dimers, and periodic ribbons. For stacked dimers and columns, the stability is affected by the relative charge distribution of the pi orbitals in adjacent guanine molecules. pi-pi coupling in some stacked columns induces dispersive energy bands, while no dispersion is identified in the planar ribbons along the connections of hydrogen bonds. The implications for different materials comprised of guanine aggregates are discussed. The bandstructure of dispersive configurations may justify a contribution of band transport (Bloch type) in the conduction mechanism of deoxyguanosine fibres, while in DNA-like configurations band transport should be negligible.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, to be published in Phys.     Zircon ages in granulite facies rocks: decoupling from geochemistry above 850 °C?

    Granulite facies rocks frequently show a large spread in their zircon ages, the interpretation of which raises questions: Has the isotopic system been disturbed? By what process(es) and conditions did the alteration occur? Can the dates be regarded as real ages, reflecting several growth episodes? Furthermore, under some circumstances of (ultra-)high-temperature metamorphism, decoupling of zircon U–Pb dates from their trace element geochemistry has been reported. Understanding these processes is crucial to help interpret such dates in the context of the P–T history. Our study presents evidence for decoupling in zircon from the highest grade metapelites (> 850 °C) taken along a continuous high-temperature metamorphic field gradient in the Ivrea Zone (NW Italy). These rocks represent a well-characterised segment of Permian lower continental crust with a protracted high-temperature history. Cathodoluminescence images reveal that zircons in the mid-amphibolite facies preserve mainly detrital cores with narrow overgrowths. In the upper amphibolite and granulite facies, preserved detrital cores decrease and metamorphic zircon increases in quantity. Across all samples we document a sequence of four rim generations based on textures. U–Pb dates, Th/U ratios and Ti-in-zircon concentrations show an essentially continuous evolution with increasing metamorphic grade, except in the samples from the granulite facies, which display significant scatter in age and chemistry. We associate the observed decoupling of zircon systematics in high-grade non-metamict zircon with disturbance processes related to differences in behaviour of non-formula elements (i.e. Pb, Th, U, Ti) at high-temperature conditions, notably differences in compatibility within the crystal structure

    CCD uvbyHbeta Photometry in Clusters: I. The Open Cluster Standard, IC 4651

    CCD photometry of the intermediate-age open cluster, IC 4651, on the uvbyHbeta system is presented and analyzed. By using a combination of the information from the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) and the color-color diagrams, a sample of 98 highly probable main sequence cluster members with high photometric accuracy is isolated. From this sample, adopting the intrinsic color relation of Olsen (1988), E(b-y) = 0.062 +/- 0.003 and [Fe/H] = +0.077 +/- 0.012, where the errors quoted are the standard errors of the mean and refer to the internal errors alone. Use of the Nissen (1988) intrinsic color relation produces E(b-y) = 0.071 and [Fe/H] = +0.115. Adopting the lower reddening, a direct main-sequence fit to the Hyades with (m-M) = 3.33 leads to (m-M) = 10.15, while isochrones with convective overshoot and zeroed to the Hyades produce an age of 1.7 +/- 0.1 Gyr, with an excellent match to the morphology of the turnoff. The higher reddening produces (m-M) = 10.3 and an age lower by 0.1 Gyr. Comparison with the CMD of NGC 3680 shows that the two clusters have virtually identical morphology which, in combination with their similar compositions, produces identical ages. Coincidentally, the shifts in the CMD necessary to superpose the two clusters require that the apparent moduli of IC 4651 and NGC 3680 be the same, while E(b-y)(4651) = E(b-y)(3680) + 0.04.Comment: 28 pages and 3 tables, in latex, 11 postscript figures.     Health behaviors and risk factors in those who use complementary and alternative medicine

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Surveys have generally found that individuals more likely to use complementary and alternative medicine are female, live in the western United States, are likely to have a health complaint, and have a higher socioeconomic status than do nonusers. What is not known is the extent to which those who use complementary and alternative medicine also engage in positive health behaviors, such as smoking cessation or increased physical activity and/or exhibit fewer health risk factors such as obesity. This has been identified as a key research question in a recent Institute of Medicine report. In the present study we sought to determine whether the use of complementary and alternative medicine is associated with health behaviors or risk factors known to impact on health status.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The current study is a cross-sectional regression analysis using data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey. Data were collected in-person from 31,044 adults throughout the 50 states and the District of Columbia.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After controlling for a range of other factors, we found that engaging in leisure-time physical activity, having consumed alcohol in one's life but not being a current heavy drinker, and being a former smoker are independently associated with the use of CAM. Obese individuals are slightly less likely to use CAM than individuals with a healthy body-mass index. No significant associations were observed between receipt of an influenza vaccine and CAM use.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Those engaging in positive health behaviors and exhibiting fewer health risk factors are more likely to use CAM than those who forgo positive health behaviors or exhibit more health risk factors. The fact that users of CAM tend to pursue generally healthy lifestyles suggests that they may be open to additional recommendations toward optimizing their health.</p

    Comparison of the oncolytic activity of a replication‐competent and a replication‐deficient herpes simplex virus 1

    In 2015, the oncolytic herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) T-VEC (talimogene laherparepvec) was approved for intratumoral injection in non-resectable malignant melanoma. To determine whether viral replication is required for oncolytic activity, we compared replication-deficient HSV-1 d106S with replication-competent T-VEC. High infectious doses of HSV-1 d106S killed melanoma (n = 10), head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (n = 11), and chondrosarcoma cell lines (n = 2) significantly faster than T-VEC as measured by MTT metabolic activity, while low doses of T-VEC were more effective over time. HSV-1 d106S and, to a lesser extent T-VEC, triggered caspase-dependent early apoptosis as shown by pan-caspase inhibition and specific induction of caspases 3/7, 8, and 9. HSV-1 d106S induced a higher ratio of apoptosis-inducing infected cell protein (ICP) 0 to apoptosis-blocking ICP6 than T-VEC. T-VEC was oncolytic for an extended period of time as viral replication continued, which could be partially blocked by the antiviral drug aciclovir. High doses of T-VEC, but not HSV-1 d106S, increased interferon-ÎČ mRNA as part of the intrinsic immune response. When markers of immunogenic cell death were assessed, ATP was released more efficiently in the context of T-VEC than HSV-1 d106S infection, whereas HMGB1 was induced comparatively well. Overall, the early oncolytic effect on three different tumour entities was stronger with the non-replicative strain, while the replication-competent virus elicited a stronger innate immune response and more pronounced immunogenic cell death
