Grating tunable 4-14 mu m GaAs optical parametric oscillator pumped at 3 mu m
We demonstrate a broadly and continuously tunable optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on orientation-patterned GaAs (OP-GaAs) operating at 2 kHz repetition rate. With the choice of the pump wavelength near lambda = 3 mu m, we were able to achieve tunable output in the whole range of 4-14.2 mu m with a linewidth between 2 and 6 cm(-1), using a single OP-GaAs structure with a domain reversal period of 150 mu m. The OPO output was tuned using (i) an intracavity diffraction grating, and (ii) fine adjustment of the pump wavelength near 3 mu m. In certain portions of the spectrum this system potentially allows fast (sub-millisecond scale) wavelength tuning over \u3e 2500 nm by fast steering the diffraction grating at a fixed pump wavelength

High power and spectral purity continuous-wave photonic THz source tunable from 1 to 4.5 THz for nonlinear molecular spectroscopy
We report a diffraction-limited photonic terahertz (THz) source with linewidth \u3c 10 MHz that can be used for nonlinear THz studies in the continuous wave (CW) regime with uninterrupted tunability in a broad range of THz frequencies. THz output is produced in orientation-patterned (OP) gallium arsenide (GaAs) via intracavity frequency mixing between the two closely spaced resonating signal and idler waves of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating near lambda = 2 mu m. The doubly resonant type II OPO is based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) pumped by a single-frequency Yb:YAG disc laser at 1030 nm. We take advantage of the enhancement of both optical fields inside a high-finesse OPO cavity: with 10 W of 1030 nm pump, 100 W of intracavity power near 2 mu m was attained with GaAs inside cavity. This allows dramatic improvement in terms of generated THz power, as compared to the state-of-the art CW methods. We achieved \u3e 25 mu W of single-frequency tunable CW THz output power scalable to \u3e 1 mW with proper choice of pump laser wavelength
Broadband Dual-Comb Spectroscopy in the Spectral Fingerprint Region
Infrared spectroscopy in the spectral fingerprint region from 6-12 um
accesses the largest molecular absorption cross-sections, permitting sensitive,
quantitative and species-specific measurements. Here, we show how dual-comb
spectroscopy--a form of high-speed Fourier-transform spectroscopy involving no
moving parts and capable of very high resolutions--can be extended to the 6-8um
wavelength band using femtosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). By
acquiring dual-comb interferograms faster than the mutual decoherence time of
the OPO combs we implement line-shape-preserving averaging to obtain low-noise,
high-fidelity spectra of H2O and CH4 at approximately 0.3 cm-1 resolutions from
1285-1585 cm-1
Octave-spanning ultrafast OPO with 2.6-6.1µm instantaneous bandwidth pumped by femtosecond Tm-fiber laser
We report the extension of broadband degenerate OPO operation further into mid-infrared. A femtosecond thulium fiber laser with output centered at 2050 nm synchronously pumps a 500-μm-long crystal of orientation patterned GaAs providing broadband gain centered at 4.1 µm. We observe a pump threshold of 17 mW and output bandwidth extending from 2.6 to 6.1 µm at the −30 dB level. Average output power was 37 mW. Appropriate resonator group dispersion is a key factor for achieving degenerate operation with instantaneously broad bandwidth. The output spectrum is very sensitive to absorption and dispersion introduced by molecular species inside the OPO cavity

Efficient half-harmonic generation of three-optical-cycle mid-IR frequency comb around 4 µm using OP-GaP
We report a broadband mid-infrared frequency comb with three-optical-cycle pulse duration centered around 4.2 µm, via half-harmonic generation using orientation-patterned GaP (OP-GaP) with ~43% conversion efficiency. We experimentally compare performance of GaP with GaAs and lithium niobate as the nonlinear element, and show how properties of GaP at this wavelength lead to generation of the shortest pulses and the highest conversion efficiency. These results shed new light on half-harmonic generation of frequency combs, and pave the way for generation of short-pulse intrinsically-locked frequency combs at longer wavelengths in the mid-infrared with high conversion efficiencies
Anticoagulation for the long-term treatment of venous thromboembolism in patients with cancer
Background: Cancer increases the risk of thromboembolic events in patients including those receiving anticoagulation treatments. Objectives: To compare the efficacy and safety of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and oral anticoagulants for the long-term treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with cancer. Search methods: We conducted a comprehensive search for studies of anticoagulation in cancer patients including 1. a February 2013 electronic search of: the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL Issue 12, 2012), MEDLINE, and EMBASE; 2. a handsearch of conference proceedings; 3. checking of references of included studies; 4. use of the 'related citation' feature in PubMed; and 5. a search of clinicaltrials.gov for ongoing studies. Selection criteria: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing long-term treatment with LMWH versus oral anticoagulants (vitamin K antagonist (VKA) or ximelagatran) in patients with cancer and symptomatic objectively confirmed VTE. Data collection and analysis: Using a standardized data form, we extracted data on methodological quality, participants, interventions and outcomes of interest: survival, recurrent VTE, major bleeding, minor bleeding, thrombocytopenia, and postphlebitic syndrome. We assessed the quality of evidence at the outcome level following the GRADE approach. Main results: Of 9559 identified citations, 10 RCTs (11 reports) were eligible and reported data for 1981 patients with cancer. We excluded 14 studies in which patients with cancer constituted study subgroups, but did not report outcome data for them. Meta-analysis of seven RCTs comparing LMWH with VKA found no statistically significant survival benefit (hazard ratio (HR) 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.81 to 1.14) but a statistically significant reduction in VTE (HR 0.47; 95% CI 0.32 to 0.71). The remaining findings did not exclude a beneficial or harmful effect of LMWH compared with VKA for the outcomes of major bleeding (RR 1.07; 95% CI 0.52 to 2.19), minor bleeding (RR 0.89; 95% CI 0.51 to 1.55), or thrombocytopenia (RR 0.98; 95% CI 0.57 to 1.66). We judged the quality of evidence as low for mortality, major bleeding, and minor bleeding, and as moderate for recurrent VTE. One RCT comparing dabigatran with VKA did not exclude beneficial or harmful effects of one agent over the other. One RCT comparing six months' extension of anticoagulation with 18 months of ximelagatran 24 \u3bcg twice daily versus no extended ximelagatran did not exclude beneficial or harmful effects for the outcomes of reduction in VTE, mortality, and minor bleeding. One RCT comparing once-weekly subcutaneous injection of idraparinux for three or six months versus standard treatment (parenteral anticoagulation followed by warfarin or acenocoumarol) suggested a reduction in recurrent VTE (HR 0.39; 95% CI 0.14 to 1.11) at six months, but did not exclude beneficial or harmful effects for the outcomes of mortality (HR 0.99; 95% CI 0.66 to 1.48) and major bleeding (RR 1.04; 95% CI 0.39 to 2.83). Authors' conclusions: For the long-term treatment of VTE in patients with cancer, LMWH compared with VKA reduces venous thromboembolic events but not mortality. The decision for a patient with cancer and VTE to start long-term LMWH versus oral anticoagulation should balance the benefits and harms and integrate the patient's values and preferences for the important outcomes and alternative management strategies
Performance of Dual-Purpose Cows on a Native Pasture-\u3ci\u3eArachis pintoi\u3c/i\u3e Association in the Humid Tropics of Mexico
Native grasslands (NG) are the main feed supply of dual-purpose (DP) cows of the Mexican humid tropics. NG comprise about 85% of Paspalum, Axonopus and Cynodon species, about 5% of native legumes, mainly of Desmodium, and the remaining 10% are narrow and broad leafed weeds. Arachis pintoi (AP) is a persistent grazing tolerant tropical legume. In association with sown grasses, it has improved dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive quality of forage, and milk yield up to 9 kg/cow/day (González et al., 1996). The objective was to determine if productive performance of DP cows could be improved by the introduction of AP into NG grassland
