    Co-existence of RFID and Barcode in Automotive Logistics

    Today barcode is the dominant auto-ID technology in the automotive supply chain. The prevalence of barcode is likely to affect the adoption and diffusion of RFID technology. In this paper, we focus on the migration from barcode to RFID in the automotive industry and point out the relevance of barcode for future RFID rollouts. We study the case of a RFID pilot project to derive a concept for managing the technological co-existence of barcode and RFID technology. Our research demonstrates that the implementation of interfaces on multiple levels ensures the interoperability of barcode and RFID and supports companies in achieving gradual RFID migration in large-scale RFID rollouts

    Fastaer det: Fast aerial embedded real-time detection

    Automated detection of objects in aerial imagery is the basis for many applications, such as search and rescue operations, activity monitoring or mapping. However, in many cases it is beneficial to employ a detector on-board of the aerial platform in order to avoid latencies, make basic decisions within the platform and save transmission bandwidth. In this work, we address the task of designing such an on-board aerial object detector, which meets certain requirements in accuracy, inference speed and power consumption. For this, we first outline a generally applicable design process for such on-board methods and then follow this process to develop our own set of models for the task. Specifically, we first optimize a baseline model with regards to accuracy while not increasing runtime. We then propose a fast detection head to significantly improve runtime at little cost in accuracy. Finally, we discuss several aspects to consider during deployment and in the runtime environment. Our resulting four models that operate at 15, 30, 60 and 90 FPS on an embedded Jetson AGX device are published for future benchmarking and comparison by the community

    Recycling of ICT and other electronic products is gaining in importance due to both ecological and economic reasons such as the shortage of resources contained in electronic devices. European legislation has handed the responsibility for recycling electronic products to the producers. However, the WEEE directive (waste electrical and electronic equipment) and its national transpositions have been criticized for failing to reach the original goal of promoting design for recycling. In this paper we analyze how detailed object-related information can support recycling processes. We propose a distributed RFID-based waste management information system for electronic devices which enables individualizing producer responsibility but also supports other goals of waste management by providing detailed object-related information.     MANAGING THE COMPLEXITY OF LARGE-SCALE RFID ROLLOUT PROJECTS IN LOGISTICS

    The adoption and diffusion of RFID in logistics falls short behind the optimistic expectations shaped years ago. The complexity of large-scale RFID rollout projects is a barrier for widespread adoption and diffusion of RFID. Current RFID specific project management frameworks address the implementation of isolated RFID projects but provide very limited guidance on how to manage large-scale RFID rollouts. This paper provides substantiated insights on fuzzy front-end activities in the early phase of RFID rollout projects at a large automotive manufacturer. Our findings indicate that indivisibility as the underlying source of complexity is one of the principal factors for hesitant adoption and diffusion of RFID in automotive logistics. We propose fuzzy front-end approaches to address identified complexity issues and ramp up RFID implementation in a diverse cross-company and multi-project environment

    Acute and Delayed Effects of Time-Matched Very Short “All Out” Efforts in Concentric vs. Eccentric Cycling

    [EN] Abstract: Background: To the authors’ knowledge, there have been no studies comparing the acute responses to “all out” efforts in concentric (isoinertial) vs. eccentric (isovelocity) cycling. Methods: After two familiarization sessions, 12 physically active men underwent the experimental protocols consisting of a 2-min warm-up and 8 maximal efforts of 5 s, separated by 55 s of active recovery at 80 rpm , in concentric vs. eccentric cycling. Comparisons between protocols were conducted during, immediately after, and 24-h post-sessions. Results: Mechanical (Work: 82,824 ± 6350 vs. 60,602 ± 8904 J) and cardiometabolic responses (mean HR: 68.8 ± 6.6 vs. 51.3 ± 5.7% HRmax, lac- tate: 4.9 ± 2.1 vs. 1.8 ± 0.6 mmol/L) were larger in concentric cycling (p < 0.001). The perceptual responses to both protocols were similarly low. Immediately after concentric cycling, vertical jump was potentiated (p = 0.028). Muscle soreness (VAS; p = 0.016) and thigh circumference (p = 0.045) were slightly increased only 24-h after eccentric cycling. Serum concentrations of CK, BAG3, and MMP-13 did not change significantly post-exercise. Conclusions: These results suggest the appro- priateness of the eccentric cycling protocol used as a time-efficient (i.e., ~60 kJ in 10 min) and safe (i.e., without exercise-induced muscle damage) alternative to be used with different populations in future longitudinal interventions
