    Does Webinar-Based Financial Education Affect Knowledge and Behavior?

    Using webinar delivery for Extension financial education programs allows educators to reach a broader range of clientele. It can, however, be difficult to gauge participants\u27 learning of concepts in an online environment. Evaluations of two webinar series, one in Montana and the other in South Dakota, sought to determine the effectiveness of using webinar-based financial education. Online retrospective pre-post and follow-up evaluations of the programs showed that participants increased their knowledge and performed positive financial behaviors as a result of participating

    Population inversion in optically pumped asymmetric quantum well terahertz lasers

    Intersubband carrier lifetimes and population ratios are calculated for three- and four-level optically pumped terahertz laser structures. Laser operation is based on intersubband transitions between the conduction band states of asymmetric GaAs-Ga(1 – x)Al(x)As quantum wells. It is shown that the carrier lifetimes in three-level systems fulfill the necessary conditions for stimulated emission only at temperatures below 200 K. The addition of a fourth level, however, enables fast depopulation of the lower laser level by resonant longitudinal optical phonon emission and thus offers potential for room temperature laser operation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics

    Remarks on Duality Transformations and Generalized Stabilizer States

    We consider the transformation of Hamilton operators under various sets of quantum operations acting simultaneously on all adjacent pairs of particles. We find mappings between Hamilton operators analogous to duality transformations as well as exact characterizations of ground states employing non-Hermitean eigenvalue equations and use this to motivate a generalization of the stabilizer formalism to non-Hermitean operators. The resulting class of states is larger than that of standard stabilizer states and allows for example for continuous variation of local entropies rather than the discrete values taken on stabilizer states and the exact description of certain ground states of Hamilton operators.Comment: Contribution to Special Issue in Journal of Modern Optics celebrating the 60th birthday of Peter Knigh

    The quantum capacity is properly defined without encodings

    We show that no source encoding is needed in the definition of the capacity of a quantum channel for carrying quantum information. This allows us to use the coherent information maximized over all sources and and block sizes, but not encodings, to bound the quantum capacity. We perform an explicit calculation of this maximum coherent information for the quantum erasure channel and apply the bound in order find the erasure channel's capacity without relying on an unproven assumption as in an earlier paper.Comment: 19 pages revtex with two eps figures.     Perturbative expansions for the fidelities and spatially correlated dissipation of quantum bits

    We construct generally applicable short-time perturbative expansions for some fidelities, such as the input-output fidelity, the entanglement fidelity, and the average fidelity. Successive terms of these expansions yield characteristic times for the damping of the fidelities involving successive powers of the Hamiltonian. The second-order results, which represent the damping rates of the fidelities, are extensively discussed. As an interesting application of these expansions, we use them to study the spatially-correlated dissipation of quantum bits. Spatial correlations in the dissipation are described by a correlation function. Explicit conditions are derived for independent decoherence and for collective decoherence.Comment: Minor changes in discussion

    Indeterminate-length quantum coding

    The quantum analogues of classical variable-length codes are indeterminate-length quantum codes, in which codewords may exist in superpositions of different lengths. This paper explores some of their properties. The length observable for such codes is governed by a quantum version of the Kraft-McMillan inequality. Indeterminate-length quantum codes also provide an alternate approach to quantum data compression.Comment: 32 page
