On statistically stationary homogeneous shear turbulence
A statistically stationary turbulence with a mean shear gradient is realized
in a flow driven by suitable body forces. The flow domain is periodic in
downstream and spanwise directions and bounded by stress free surfaces in the
normal direction. Except for small layers near the surfaces the flow is
homogeneous. The fluctuations in turbulent energy are less violent than in the
simulations using remeshing, but the anisotropy on small scales as measured by
the skewness of derivatives is similar and decays weakly with increasing

Factors Associated with Tuberculosis and Rifampicin-Resistant Tuberculosis amongst Symptomatic Patients in India: A Retrospective Analysis
Background Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge for India. Various studies have documented different levels of TB and multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB among diverse groups of the population. In view of renewed targets set under the End TB strategy by 2035, there is an urgent need for TB diagnosis to be strengthened. Drawing on data from a recent, multisite study, we address key questions for TB diagnosis amongst symptomatics presenting for care: are there subgroups of patients that are more likely than others, to be positive for TB? In turn, amongst these positive cases, are there factors—apart from treatment history—that may be predictive for multi-drug resistance? Methods We used data from a multi-centric prospective demonstration study, conducted from March 2012 to December 2013 in 18 sub-district level TB programme units (TUs) in India and covering a population of 8.8 million. In place of standard diagnostic tests, upfront Xpert MTB/RIF testing was offered to all presumptive TB symptomatics. Here, using data from this study, we used logistic regression to identify association between risk factors and TB and Rifampicin-Resistant TB among symptomatics enrolled in the study. Results We find that male gender; history of TB treatment; and adult age compared with either children or the elderly are risk factors associated with high TB detection amongst symptomatics, across the TUs. While treatment history is found be a significant risk factor for rifampicin-resistant TB, elderly (65+ yrs) people have significantly lower risk than other age groups. However, pediatric TB cases have no less risk of rifampicin resistance as compared with adults (OR 1.23 (95% C.I. 0.85–1.76)). Similarly, risk of rifampicin resistance among both the genders was the same. These patterns applied across the study sites involved. Notably in Mumbai, amongst those patients with microbiological confirmation of TB, female patients showed a higher risk of having MDR-TB than male patients. Conclusion Our results cast fresh light on the characteristics of symptomatics presenting for care who are most likely to be microbiologically positive for TB, and for rifampicin resistance. The challenges posed by TB control are complex and multifactorial: evidence from diverse sources, including retrospective studies such as that addressed here, can be invaluable in informing future strategies to accelerate declines in TB burden
Prospects for the Measurement of the Structure of the Coupling of a Higgs Boson to Weak Gauge Bosons in Weak Boson Fusion with the ATLAS Detector
The prospects for the measurement of the tensor structure of the vertex between a standard model Higgs boson and two weak gauge bosons using the distribution of the azimuthal angles between the two tagging jets in the weak boson fusion channel are studied in a Monte Carlo analysis using the fast simulation of the ATLAS detector. The decay channels , at GeV and at GeV are used in the analysis. For a standard model Higgs boson it is found that purely anomalous couplings are expected to be excluded at a confidence level corresponding to 2\, or more at GeV and more than 5\, at GeV from fb of data. With a value of 1 roughly reproducing the standard model cross section for a purely anomalous coupling, the standard deviation in a measurement of a contribution of a CP even anomalous coupling in addition to the standard model coupling is estimated to be 0.20 at GeV and 0.08 at GeV
Simulation study of the effect of the chemical heterogeneity of activated carbon on water adsorption
In this paper we present results from the molecular simulation of water adsorption in slit-shaped activated carbon pores. We calculate adsorption isotherms by grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation, Henry's constants by Monte Carlo integration, and vapor-liquid equilibrium data by the gauge-cell Monte Carlo method, to investigate the chemical heterogeneity of activated carbon adsorbents. Several types of polar oxygen-containing sites are placed on the surface of the carbon with different densities and local distributions, in order to determine the individual effects of each of these factors on the adsorption of water. Our results confirm the role of surface sites in the enhancement of water adsorption, Furthermore, we show that the local distribution of these sites has a strong effect on low-pressure adsorption, while the overall site density affects mainly the vapor-liquid phase transition. The type of oxygen-containing group is shown not to be of critical importance, since more complex groups can effectively be represented by simpler sites. This study forms the basis for the development of a model for activated carbon that is able to represent the chemical heterogeneity of this type of material
Molecular beam epitaxy of high structural quality Bi2Se3 on lattice matched InP(111) substrates
Epitaxial layers of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 have been grown by
molecular beam epitaxy on laterally lattice-matched InP(111)B substrates. High
resolution X-ray diffraction shows a significant improvement of Bi2Se3 crystal
quality compared to layers deposited on other substrates. The measured full
width at half maximum of the rocking curve is Delta omega=13 arcsec, and the
(omega-2theta) scans exhibit clear layer thickness fringes. Atomic force
microscope images show triangular twin domains with sizes increasing with layer
thickness. The structural quality of the domains is confirmed on the
microscopic level by transmission electron microscopy.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Fast high-efficiency integrated waveguide photodetectors using novel hybrid vertical/butt coupling geometry
We report a novel coupling geometry for integrated waveguide photodetectors−a hybrid vertical coupling/butt coupling scheme that allows the integration of fast, efficient, photodetectors with conventional double heterostructure waveguides. It can be employed to yield a planar, or pseudo-planar, surface that supports further levels of integration. The approach is demonstrated with a 25-µm-long p-i-n detector integrated with an InP/InGaAsP/InP waveguide, which displays a high (~90%) efficiency and large (~15 GHz) bandwidth. This is the fastest high-efficiency integrated waveguide photodetector reported to date
The quantum capacity is properly defined without encodings
We show that no source encoding is needed in the definition of the capacity
of a quantum channel for carrying quantum information. This allows us to use
the coherent information maximized over all sources and and block sizes, but
not encodings, to bound the quantum capacity. We perform an explicit
calculation of this maximum coherent information for the quantum erasure
channel and apply the bound in order find the erasure channel's capacity

Large optical gain from four-wave mixing instabilities in semiconductor quantum wells
Based on a microscopic many-particle theory, we predict large optical gain in
the probe and background-free four-wave mixing directions caused by excitonic
instabilities in semiconductor quantum wells. For a single quantum well with
radiative-decay limited dephasing in a typical pump-probe setup we discuss the
microscopic driving mechanisms and polarization and frequency dependence of
these instabilities
