Interaction of the phencyclidine model of schizophrenia and nicotine on total and categorized ultrasonic vocalizations in rats
Patients with schizophrenia smoke cigarettes at a higher rate than the general population. We hypothesized that a factor in this comorbidity is sensitivity to the reinforcing and reinforcement- enhancement effects of nicotine.
Phencyclidine (PCP) was used to model behavioral changes resembling negative symptoms of schizophrenia in rats. USVs in rats have been used to measure emotional states, with 50 kHz USVs indicating positive states and 22 kHz indicating negative. Total and categorized numbers of 22 and 50 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) and USVs during a visual stimulus (e.g. a potential measure of reinforcement-enhancement) were examined in rats following .injection ofh PCP (2.0 mg/kg), and/or nicotine (0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg) daily for 7 days. PCP was then discontinued and all rats received nicotine (0.2 mg/kg and 0.4 mg/kg) and PCP (2.0 mg/kg) on 3 challenge days.
PCP acutely decreased 50 kHz vocalizations while repeated nicotine potentiated rates of vocalizations, with similar patterns during light presentations. Rats in the PCP and nicotine combination groups made more 50 kHz vocalizations compared to control groups on challenge days.
We conclude that PCP may produce a reward deficit that is shown by decreased 50 kHz USVs, and behaviors post-PCP exposure may best model the comorbidity between schizophrenia and nicotine
Dynamical Ne K Edge and Line Variations in the X-Ray Spectrum of the Ultra-compact Binary 4U 0614+091
We observed the ultra-compact binary candidate 4U 0614+091 for a total of 200
ksec with the high-energy transmission gratings onboard the \chandra X-ray
Observatory. The source is found at various intensity levels with spectral
variations present. X-ray luminosities vary between 2.0 \ergsec
and 3.5 \ergsec. Continuum variations are present at all times
and spectra can be well fit with a powerlaw component, a high kT blackbody
component, and a broad line component near oxygen. The spectra require
adjustments to the Ne K edge and in some occasions also to the Mg K edge. The
Ne K edge appears variable in terms of optical depths and morphology. The edge
reveals average blue- and red-shifted values implying Doppler velocities of the
order of 3500 \kms. The data show that Ne K exhibits excess column densities of
up to several 10 cm. The variability proves that the excess is
intrinsic to the source. The correponding disk velocities also imply an outer
disk radius of the order of cm consistent with an ultra-compact binary
nature. We also detect a prominent soft emission line complex near the \oviii
L position which appears extremely broad and relativistic effects from
near the innermost disk have to be included. Gravitationally broadened line
fits also provide nearly edge-on angles of inclination between 86 and
89. The emissions appear consistent with an ionized disk with
ionization parameters of the order of 10 at radii of a few 10 cm. The
line wavelengths with respect to \oviiia\ are found variably blue-shifted
indicating more complex inner disk dynamics.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophyscial Main Journa
Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice: a renormalization group theory
We study the weakly interacting Hubbard model on the square lattice using a
one-loop renormalization group approach. The transition temperature T_c between
the metallic and (nearly) ordered states is found. In the parquet regime, (T_c
>> |mu|), the dominant correlations at temperatures below T_c are
antiferromagnetic while in the BCS regime (T_c << |mu|) at T_c the d-wave
singlet pairing susceptibility is most divergent.Comment: 12 pages, REVTEX, 3 figures included, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
On the metal-insulator transition in the two-chain model of correlated fermions
The doping-induced metal-insulator transition in two-chain systems of
correlated fermions is studied using a solvable limit of the t-J model and the
fact that various strong- and weak-coupling limits of the two-chain model are
in the same phase, i.e. have the same low-energy properties. It is shown that
the Luttinger-liquid parameter K_\rho takes the universal value unity as the
insulating state (half-filling) is approached, implying dominant d-type
superconducting fluctuations, independently of the interaction strength. The
crossover to insulating behavior of correlations as the transition is
approached is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

Motivation: De novo transcriptome assembly is an integral part for many RNA-seq workflows. Common applications include sequencing of non-model organisms, cancer or meta transcriptomes. Most de novo transcriptome assemblers use the de Bruijn graph (DBG) as the underlying data structure. The quality of the assemblies produced by such assemblers is highly influenced by the exact word length k. As such no single kmer value leads to optimal results. Instead, DBGs over different kmer values are built and the assemblies are merged to improve sensitivity. However, no studies have investigated thoroughly the problem of automatically learning at which kmer value to stop the assembly. Instead a suboptimal selection of kmer values is often used in practice. Results: Here we investigate the contribution of a single kmer value in a multi-kmer based assembly approach. We find that a comparative clustering of related assemblies can be used to estimate the importance of an additional kmer assembly. Using a model fit based algorithm we predict the kmer value at which no further assemblies are necessary. Our approach is tested with different de novo assemblers for datasets with different coverage values and read lengths. Further, we suggest a simple post processing step that significantly improves the quality of multi-kmer assemblies. Conclusion: We provide an automatic method for limiting the number of kmer values without a significant loss in assembly quality but with savings in assembly time. This is a step forward to making multi-kmer methods more reliable and easier to use. A possible phase diagram of a t-J ladder model
We investigate a t-J ladder model by numerical diagonalization method. By
calculating correlation functions and assuming the Luttinger liquid relation,
we obtained a possible phase diagram of the ground state as a function of J/t
and electron density . We also found that behavior of correlation functions
seems to consist with the prediction of Luttinger liquid relation. The result
suggests that the superconducting phase appear in the region of for high electron density and for low electron density.Comment: Latex, 10 pages, figures available upon reques
