    Advancing-side directivity and retreating-side interactions of model rotor blade-vortex interaction noise

    Acoustic data are presented from a 40 percent scale model of the four-bladed BO-105 helicopter main rotor, tested in a large aerodynamic wind tunnel. Rotor blade-vortex interaction (BVI) noise data in the low-speed flight range were acquired using a traversing in-flow microphone array. Acoustic results presented are used to assess the acoustic far field of BVI noise, to map the directivity and temporal characteristics of BVI impulsive noise, and to show the existence of retreating-side BVI signals. The characterics of the acoustic radiation patterns, which can often be strongly focused, are found to be very dependent on rotor operating condition. The acoustic signals exhibit multiple blade-vortex interactions per blade with broad impulsive content at lower speeds, while at higher speeds, they exhibit fewer interactions per blade, with much sharper, higher amplitude acoustic signals. Moderate-amplitude BVI acoustic signals measured under the aft retreating quadrant of the rotor are shown to originate from the retreating side of the rotor

    State education as high-yield investment: human capital theory in European policy discourse

    Human Capital Theory has been an increasingly important phenomenon in economic thought over the last 50 years. The central role it affords to education has become even more marked in recent years as the concept of the ‘knowledge economy’ has become a global concern. In this paper, the prevalence of Human Capital Theory within European educational policy discourse is explored. The paper examines a selection of policy documents from a number of disparate European national contexts and considers the extent to which the ideas of Human Capital Theory can be seen to be influential. In the second part of the paper, the implications of Human Capital Theory for education are considered, with a particular focus on the possible ramifications at a time of economic austerity. The paper argues that Human Capital Theory risks offering a diminished view of the person, a diminished view of education, but that with its sole focus on economic goals leaves room for educationists and others to argue for the educational, social, and moral values it ignores, and for the conception of the good life and good society it fails to mention

    A study of the solid-state polymerization of trithiane

    The temperature dependence of the rate of solid-state polymerization of trithiane was investigated in conjunction with calorimetric measurements of the heat capacity of the irradiated monomer as a function of temperature. It was found that the rate of change of entropy with temperature exhibited a maximum at about 175°C. The curve of per cent polymerization versus isochronal, post-irradiation polymerization temperature also peaked at some 175°C. Finally, the existence of a crystalline phase-transition in the monomer at about 194°C was discovered by DSC and was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and by optical microscopy. Two models which may interrelate this set of phenomena are suggested
