    Factors that Determine Preschool Teacher Self-Efficacy in an Urban School District

    The aim of the present study is to determine what teacher variables are predictive of preschool teacher self-efficacy in an urban school district. A total of 83 preschool teachers participated in the study. Teacher variables, such as years of teaching experience, job satisfaction, location of employment, age, and self-efficacy were included in a series of ANOVA analyses. Linear regression modeling reported years of teaching experience outside the birth-2nd grade setting (β= -.232, t(1,79) = -2.124, p\u3c .05) and job satisfaction (β = .294, t(2,78) = 2.793, p\u3c .01) were statistically significant predictors of preschool teacher self-efficacy. This study found that teachers with a greater amount of teaching experience outside of the birth-2nd setting feel less efficacious about themselves and their abilities to positively influence student achievement and outcomes in the preschool classroom. Further policy implications, such as hiring practices are discussed

    In Search of a Theory of Integrated Marketing Communications

    For the most part, the literature base for Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) has developed from an applied or tactical level rather than from an intellectual or theoretical one. Since industry, practitioner and even academic studies have provided little insight into what IMC is and how it operates, our approach has been to investigate that other IMC community, that is, the academic or instructional group responsible for disseminating IMC knowledge. We proposed that the people providing course instruction and directing research activities have some basis for how they organize, consider and therefore instruct in the area of IMC. A syllabi analysis of 87 IMC units in six countries investigated the content of the unit, its delivery both physically and conceptually, and defined the audience of the unit. The study failed to discover any type of latent theoretical foundation that might be used as a base for understanding IMC. The students who are being prepared to extend, expand and enhance IMC concepts do not appear to be well-served by the curriculum we found in our research. The study concludes with a model for further IMC curriculum development

    Carl Gustav Jung, the Swiss-born psychiatrist, developed the modern concept of psychological types, preferences with which individuals are born that form the foundation of their personalities. Soon after Jung\u27s work appeared in English translation, an American researcher, Katharine Briggs, began detailed studies of Jung\u27s work. She, along with her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers, devoted nearly two decades to developing ways to measure the preferences of individuals in order to determine their types and the strength of their preferences. Their collaboration resulted in the creation of a survey instrument, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which has been given to millions of Americans under the guidance of professionals trained in the administration and interpretation of the instrument. David Keirsey later developed a similar but less detailed lay instrument called the Keirsey Temperament Sorter which appeared in his 1984 book, Please Understand Me. That work had sold over one million copies by 1991, and the Sorter has been administered to additional millions

    Nitrogen and Phosphorus Recalibration for Sunflower in North Dakota

    Sunflower is one of the most important annual crops grown for edible oil in the world and is grown in North Dakota and the northern Great Plains more than any other region in the United States. Sunflower production and sunflower itself has evolved significantly since commercial cultivation began in the 1970s. In order to properly update fertility requirements of nitrogen and phosphorus in the northern Great Plains to correspond to this evolution, sunflower yield and oil concentration response to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer was investigated based on a twoyear (2014-2015) study. Highly significant statistical relationships between sunflower yield and oil concentration were found with nitrogen fertilizer rate but were not found with phosphorus fertilizer rate. This indicates that nitrogen fertilizer application rates used for sunflower need to be determined by current documented responses and that phosphorus fertilizer may not be needed to produce optimal yield and oil concentration of sunflower.National Sunflower Associatio

    O advento da química dendrítica tem facilitado a pesquisa de materiais por permitir o controle preciso do posicionamento do componente funcional na arquitetura macromolecular. Os protocolos sintéticos iterativos usados para construção dos dendrímeros foram desenvolvidos baseados no desejo de elaborar moléculas extremamente ramificadas, com alta massa molecular, massa exata e funcionalidade planejada. Arborols, inspirados em árvores e precursores de macromoléculas utilitárias, conhecidas hoje como dendrímeros, foram os primeiros exemplos a empregar blocos de construção de ramificação-C 1→3; Características físicas dos Arborols, incluindo a sua forma globular, excelente solubilidade, e agregação, combinam-se para revelar o potencial supramolecular inerente (isto é, a micela unimolecular) destas espécies únicas. A arquitetura que é característica dos materiais dendríticos também exibe qualidades fractais com base em estruturas repetitivas, ramificadas e auto-similares. Assim, o design fractal e os aspectos supramoleculares destas construções são sugestivas de um campo maior de materiais fractais que incorporam geometrias repetidas. A propensão da auto-criação de moléculas fractais para arquiteturas de ordem superior adiciona outra dimensão para essa nova arena de materiais e construção de compostos.The advent of dendritic chemistry has facilitated materials research by allowing precise control of functional component placement in macromolecular architecture. The iterative synthetic protocols used for dendrimer construction were developed based on the desire to craft highly branched, high molecular weight, molecules with exact mass and tailored functionality. Arborols, inspired by trees and precursors of the utilitarian macromolecules known as dendrimers today, were the first examples to employ predesigned, 1 → 3 C-branched, building blocks; physical characteristics of the arborols, including their globular shapes, excellent solubilities, and demonstrated aggregation, combined to reveal the inherent supramolecular potential (e.g., the unimolecular micelle) of these unique species. The architecture that is a characteristic of dendritic materials also exhibits fractal qualities based on self-similar, repetitive, branched frameworks. Thus, the fractal design and supramolecular aspects of these constructs are suggestive of a larger field of fractal materials that incorporates repeating geometries and are derived by complementary building block recognition and assembly. Use of terpyridine-M2+-terpyridine (where, M = Ru, Zn, Fe, etc) connectivity in concert with mathematical algorithms, such as forms the basis for the Seirpinski gasket, has allowed the beginning exploration of fractal materials construction. The propensity of the fractal molecules to self-assemble into higher order architectures adds another dimension to this new arena of materials and composite construction

    Revealed preference theory provides axiomatic tools for assessing whether individuals make observable choices "as if" they are maximizing an underlying utility function. The theory evokes a tradeoff between goods whereby individuals improve themselves by trading one good for another good to obtain the best combination. Preferences revealed in these choices are modeled as curves of equal choice (indifference curves) and reflect an underlying process of optimization. These notions have far-reaching applications in consumer choice theory and impact the welfare of human and animal populations. However, they lack the empirical implementation in animals that would be required to establish a common biological basis. In a design using basic features of revealed preference theory, we measured in rhesus monkeys the frequency of repeated choices between bundles of two liquids. For various liquids, the animals' choices were compatible with the notion of giving up a quantity of one good to gain one unit of another good while maintaining choice indifference, thereby implementing the concept of marginal rate of substitution. The indifference maps consisted of nonoverlapping, linear, convex, and occasionally concave curves with typically negative, but also sometimes positive, slopes depending on bundle composition. Out-of-sample predictions using homothetic polynomials validated the indifference curves. The animals' preferences were internally consistent in satisfying transitivity. Change of option set size demonstrated choice optimality and satisfied the Weak Axiom of Revealed Preference (WARP). These data are consistent with a version of revealed preference theory in which preferences are stochastic; the monkeys behaved "as if" they had well-structured preferences and maximized utility
