Do Killing-Yano tensors form a Lie Algebra?
Killing-Yano tensors are natural generalizations of Killing vectors. We
investigate whether Killing-Yano tensors form a graded Lie algebra with respect
to the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. We find that this proposition does not hold
in general, but that it does hold for constant curvature spacetimes. We also
show that Minkowski and (anti)-deSitter spacetimes have the maximal number of
Killing-Yano tensors of each rank and that the algebras of these tensors under
the SN bracket are relatively simple extensions of the Poincare and (A)dS

Real-time detection of single electron tunneling using a quantum point contact
We observe individual tunnel events of a single electron between a quantum
dot and a reservoir, using a nearby quantum point contact (QPC) as a charge
meter. The QPC is capacitively coupled to the dot, and the QPC conductance
changes by about 1% if the number of electrons on the dot changes by one. The
QPC is voltage biased and the current is monitored with an IV-convertor at room
temperature. We can resolve tunnel events separated by only 8 s, limited
by noise from the IV-convertor. Shot noise in the QPC sets a 25 ns lower bound

Mental health and wellbeing of postgraduate researchers: exploring the relationship between mental health literacy, help-seeking behaviour, psychological distress, and wellbeing.
Studies of Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) have highlighted that the population may be at risk of developing symptoms of common mental health problems. Early intervention and preventative measures may reduce this risk, such as improving mental health literacy (MHL). However, it is unclear what the relationship is between MHL and outcomes such as help-seeking behaviour, psychological distress and wellbeing, in PGRs. Therefore, the current study aimed to explore this relationship. A secondary aim of this study was to compare data collected from PGRs with undergraduate students. Two hundred and forty-one PGRs from two universities in England completed an anonymous online quantitative survey, with PGRs reporting on their MHL, help-seeking behaviour, psychological distress, and wellbeing, in addition to demographic and academic characteristics. Results indicated that 70% of PGRs were experiencing symptoms categorised as mild to severe psychological distress. Stepwise multiple regressions revealed that lower levels of wellbeing predicted higher levels of distress and lower levels of help-seeking behaviour. Compared with undergraduate students, PGRs in this study reported higher levels of psychological distress compared to undergraduate students, after adjusting for age, sex, and previous diagnosis of a mental health problem, as well as MHL, after adjusting for sex and previous diagnosis (p 0.05). Study findings suggest that PGRs, at the start of the academic year, are distressed and may not be seeking appropriate help for their concerns. Further studies should explore the environmental factors that may exacerbate mental health concerns beyond that associated with a challenging degree, within the PGR population
On the Axiomatics of the 5-dimensional Projective Unified Field Theory of Schmutzer
For more than 40 years E.Schmutzer has developed a new approach to the
(5-dimensional) projective relativistic theory which he later called Projective
Unified Field Theory (PUFT). In the present paper we introduce a new axiomatics
for Schmutzer's theory. By means of this axiomatics we can give a new

Southern ocean warming, sea level and hydrological change during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum
A brief (~150 kyr) period of widespread global average surface warming marks the transition between the Paleocene and Eocene epochs, ~56 million years ago. This so-called "Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum" (PETM) is associated with the massive injection of <sup>13</sup>C-depleted carbon, reflected in a negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE). Biotic responses include a global abundance peak (acme) of the subtropical dinoflagellate <i>Apectodinium</i>. Here we identify the PETM in a marine sedimentary sequence deposited on the East Tasman Plateau at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1172 and show, based on the organic paleothermometer TEX<sub>86</sub>, that southwest Pacific sea surface temperatures increased from ~26 °C to ~33°C during the PETM. Such temperatures before, during and after the PETM are >10 °C warmer than predicted by paleoclimate model simulations for this latitude. In part, this discrepancy may be explained by potential seasonal biases in the TEX<sub>86</sub> proxy in polar oceans. Additionally, the data suggest that not only Arctic, but also Antarctic temperatures may be underestimated in simulations of ancient greenhouse climates by current generation fully coupled climate models. An early influx of abundant <i>Apectodinium</i> confirms that environmental change preceded the CIE on a global scale. Organic dinoflagellate cyst assemblages suggest a local decrease in the amount of river run off reaching the core site during the PETM, possibly in concert with eustatic rise. Moreover, the assemblages suggest changes in seasonality of the regional hydrological system and storm activity. Finally, significant variation in dinoflagellate cyst assemblages during the PETM indicates that southwest Pacific climates varied significantly over time scales of 10<sup>3</sup> – 10<sup>4</sup> years during this event, a finding comparable to similar studies of PETM successions from the New Jersey Shelf
Ionospheric quasi-static electric field anomalies during seismic activity in August–September 1981
The paper proposes new results, analyses and information for the plate tectonic situation in the processing of INTERCOSMOS-BULGARIA-1300 satellite data about anomalies of the quasi-static electric field in the upper ionosphere over activated earthquake source regions at different latitudes. The earthquake catalogue is made on the basis of information from the United State Geological Survey (USGS) website. The disturbances in ionospheric quasi-static electric fields are recorded by IESP-1 instrument aboard the INTERCOSMOS-BULGARIA-1300 satellite and they are compared with significant seismic events from the period 14 August–20 September 1981 in magnetically very quiet, quiet and medium quiet days. The main tectonic characteristics of the seismically activated territories are also taken in account. The main goal of the above research work is to enlarge the research of possible connections between anomalous vertical electric field penetrations into the ionosphere and the earthquake manifestations, also to propose tectonic arguments for the observed phenomena. The studies are represented in four main blocks: (i) previous studies of similar problems, (ii) selection of satellite, seismic and plate tectonic data, (iii) data processing with new specialized software and observations of the quasi-static electric field and (iiii) summary, comparison of new with previous results in our studies and conclusion. We establish the high informativity of the vertical component <i>Ez</i> of the quasi-static electric field in the upper ionosphere according observations by INTERCOSMOS-BULGARIA-1300 that are placed above considerably activated earthquake sources. This component shows an increase of about 2–10 mV/m above sources, situated on mobile structures of the plates. The paper discusses the observed effects. It is represented also a statistical study of ionospheric effects 5–15 days before and 5–15 days after the earthquakes with magnitude M 4.8–7.9
Normal frames and the validity of the equivalence principle. I. Cases in a neighborhood and at a point
A treatment in a neighborhood and at a point of the equivalence principle on
the basis of derivations of the tensor algebra over a manifold is given.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of local bases,
called normal frames, in which the components of derivations vanish in a
neighborhood or at a point. These frames (bases), if any, are explicitly
described and the problem of their holonomicity is considered. In particular,
the obtained results concern symmetric as well as nonsymmetric linear

Normal frames and the validity of the equivalence principle
We investigate the validity of the equivalence principle along paths in
gravitational theories based on derivations of the tensor algebra over a
differentiable manifold. We prove the existence of local bases, called normal,
in which the components of the derivations vanish along arbitrary paths. All
such bases are explicitly described. The holonomicity of the normal bases is
considered. The results obtained are applied to the important case of linear
connections and their relationship with the equivalence principle is described.
In particular, any gravitational theory based on tensor derivations which obeys
the equivalence principle along all paths, must be based on a linear

Behaviour of Magnetic Tubes in Neutron Star's Interior
It is found from Maxwell's equations that the magnetic field lines are good
analogues of relativistic strings. It is shown that the super-conducting
current in the neutron star's interior causes local rotation of magnetic flux

Space-time defects and teleparallelism
We consider the class of space-time defects investigated by Puntigam and
Soleng. These defects describe space-time dislocations and disclinations
(cosmic strings), and are in close correspondence to the actual defects that
arise in crystals and metals. It is known that in such materials dislocations
and disclinations require a small and large amount of energy, respectively, to
be created. The present analysis is carried out in the context of the
teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR). We evaluate the
gravitational energy of these space-time defects in the framework of the TEGR
and find that there is an analogy between defects in space-time and in
continuum material systems: the total gravitational energy of space-time
dislocations and disclinations (considered as idealized defects) is zero and
