    Development and screening of selective catalysts for the synthesis of clean liquid fuels

    This article is a compilation of the research carried out under EEC contract EN3V-0400-D at the Institut fĂĽr Energieverfahrenstechnik in JĂĽlich and at the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Materials Science, Delft, concerning the development and screening of copper/cobalt-based catalysts for the synthesis of alcohol mixtures from syngas. Analogous work, based on copper/zinc oxide/alumina catalysts, has been performed at the Faculty of Chemical Technology in Twente University at Enschede. This work is described in a companion paper. Comparative tests of several catalysts in a pressure micropulse reactor and in a plug flow tubular reactor, carried out at the Institut fĂĽr Technische Chemie, TU Braunschweig, are presented in a second companion paper. \ud In the discussion section of the present article the results obtained by the joint groups are compared with the initial objectives of the programme

    Connecting your Mobile Shopping Cart to the Internet-of-Things

    International audienceOnline shopping has reached an unforeseen success during the last decade thanks to the explosion of the Internet and the development of dedicated websites. Nonetheless, the wide diversity of e-commerce websites does not really foster the sales, but rather leaves the customer in the middle of dense jungle. In particular, finding the best offer for a specific product might require to spend hours browsing the Internet without being sure of finding the best deal in the end. While some websites are providing comparators to help the customer in finding the best offer meeting her/his requirements, the objectivity of these websites remains questionable, the comparison criteria are statically defined, while the nature of products they support is restricted to specific categories (e.g., electronic devices). In this paper, we introduce MACCHIATO as a user-centered platform leveraging online shopping. MACCHIATO implements the principles of the Internet-of-Things by adopting the REST architectural style and semantic web standards to navigate product databases exposed on the Internet. By doing so, customers keep the control of their shopping process by selecting the stores and comparing the offers according to their own preferences

    Hydrological long-term dry and wet periods in the Xijiang River basin, South China

    In this study, hydrological long-term dry and wet periods are analyzed for the Xijiang River basin in South China. Daily precipitation data of 118 stations and data on daily discharge at Gaoyao hydrological station at the mouth of the Xijiang River for the period 1961–2007 are used. At a 24-month timescale, the standardized precipitation index (SPI-24) for the six sub-basins of the Xijiang River and the standardized discharge index (SDI-24) for Gaoyao station are applied. The monthly values of the SPI-24 averaged for the Xijiang River basin correlate highly with the monthly values of the SDI-24. Distinct long-term dry and wet sequences can be detected. <br><br> The principal component analysis is applied and shows spatial disparities in dry and wet periods for the six sub-basins. The correlation between the SPI-24 of the six sub-basins and the first principal component score shows that 67% of the variability within the sub-basins can be explained by dry and wet periods in the east of the Xijiang River basin. The spatial dipole conditions (second and third principal component) explain spatiotemporal disparities in the variability of dry and wet periods. All sub-basins contribute to hydrological dry periods, while mainly the northeastern sub-basins cause wet periods in the Xijiang River. We can also conclude that long-term dry events are larger in spatial extent and cover all sub-basins while long-term wet events are regional phenomena. <br><br> A spectral analysis is applied for the SPI-24 and the SDI-24. The results show significant peaks in periodicities of 11–14.7 yr, 2.8 yr, 3.4–3.7 yr, and 6.3–7.3 yr. The same periodic cycles can be found in the SPI-24 of the six sub-basins but with some variability in the mean magnitude. A wavelet analysis shows that significant periodicities have been stable over time since the 1980s. Extrapolations of the reconstructed SPI-24 and SDI-24 represent the continuation of observed significant periodicities at given magnitudes until 2030. The projected hydrological long-term dry and wet periods can be used for planning purposes in water resources management. The applied methodologies prove to be able to identify spatial disparities, and to detect significant periodicities in hydrological long-term dry and wet periods in the Xijiang River basin

    An optimized BSCCO/Ag resonator coil for utility use

    AC coils made with BSCCO-2223/Ag tapes and operating in liquid nitrogen have a potential for power related applications, e.g., inductors, transformers and current limiters. High-Tc tapes are available from several producers, while access to the coil building know-help is still rather limited, The relevant knowledge and technology suitable for making HTS coils for 50-60 Hz operation is being developed as a part of the current project. To verify the technology, several test solenoids and a first full-scale sub-coil have been manufactured. Electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical analysis of the coils is performed. The electromagnetic analysis focuses on the reduction of the radial magnetic field component in the windings. Voltage-current characteristics and the AC loss data obtained from relevant short sample measurements are applied. A good agreement between calculated and measured V-I curves and losses of the coils is found. A remarkable increase of the critical current and the reduction of the AC loss at the coil edges are predicted and confirmed experimentally. With the losses defined, thermal analysis and optimization of the coil structure are performed numerically followed by measurements for verification.     Photoproduction of eta meson within a coupled-channels K-matrix approach

    We investigate photoproduction of eta mesons off protons and neutrons within a coupled-channels effective-Lagrangian method which is based on the K-matrix approach. The two-body final channels included are pi-N, eta-N, phi-N, rho-N, gamma-N, K-Lambda, and K-Sigma. Non-resonant meson-baryon interactions are included in the model via nucleon intermediate states in the s- and u-channels, meson exchanges in the t-channel amplitude and the u-channel resonances. The nucleon resonances S_{11}(1535), S_{11}(1650), S_{31}(1620), P_{11}(1440), P_{11}(1710), P_{13}(1720), P_{33}(1232), P_{33}(1600), D_{13}(1520), D_{13}(1700), and D_{33}(1700) are included explicitly in calculations. Our model describes simultaneously the available data as well on total and differential cross sections as on beam and target asymmetries. This holds for the p(gamma,eta)p reaction for photon energies ranging from very close to threshold to up to 3 GeV. The polarization observables show strong sensitivity to resonances that otherwise contribute only weakly to the total cross section. It is found that the pronounced bump-like structure seen in the excitation function of the n(gamma,eta)n cross section at gamma energies around 1 GeV, can be explained by the interference effects of S_{11}, P_{11} and P_{13} resonance contributions.Comment: 36 pages, 14 figures, one new figure added, discussions revised, version to appear in Phys.     Anharmonic Decay of Vibrational States in Amorphous Silicon

    Anharmonic decay rates are calculated for a realistic atomic model of amorphous silicon. The results show that the vibrational states decay on picosecond timescales and follow the two-mode density of states, similar to crystalline silicon, but somewhat faster.     A new limit on the Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic-Ray flux with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope

    A particle cascade (shower) in a dielectric, for example as initiated by an ultra-high energy cosmic ray, will have an excess of electrons which will emit coherent \v{C}erenkov radiation, known as the Askaryan effect. In this work we study the case in which such a particle shower occurs in a medium just below its surface. We show, for the first time, that the radiation transmitted through the surface is independent of the depth of the shower below the surface when observed from far away, apart from trivial absorption effects. As a direct application we use the recent results of the NuMoon project, where a limit on the neutrino flux for energies above 102210^{22}\,eV was set using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope by measuring pulsed radio emission from the Moon, to set a limit on the flux of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.
