    ASDTIC: A feedback control innovation

    Get PDF
The ASDTIC (Analog Signal to Discrete Time Interval Converter) control subsystem provides precise output control of high performance aerospace power supplies. The key to ASDTIC operation is that it stably controls output by sensing output energy change as well as output magnitude. The ASDTIC control subsystem and control module were developed to improve power supply performance during static and dynamic input voltage and output load variations, to reduce output voltage or current regulation due to component variations or aging, to maintain a stable feedback control with variations in the loop gain or loop time constants, and to standardize the feedback control subsystem for power conditioning equipment

    Get PDF
Objective: The research assessed the attitudes and behaviors of pet owners pertaining to online search behavior for pet health information. Methods: A survey was conducted with a random sample of pet owners drawn from two US metropolitan areas and surrounding cities. Participating clinics were chosen randomly, and each participating clinic was asked to distribute 100 surveys to their clients until all surveys were disbursed. Results: Although some perceptions and behaviors surrounding the use of the Internet for pet health information differ based on gender, age, or education level of pet owners, there are many aspects in which there are no differences based on these demographics. Conclusions: Results of the study suggest that closer examination of the common perception that gender, age, or education level has an effect on Internet behavior as it relates to veterinary medicine is required. Recommendations are made pertaining to the growing presence of the Internet and its impact on veterinary medicine. doi: 10.3163/1536-5050.100.3.01

    Late onset of Huntington's disease

Twenty-five patients with late-onset Huntington's disease were studied; motor impairment appeared at age 50 years or later. The average age at onset of chorea was 57.5 years, with an average age at diagnosis of 63.1 years. Approximately 25% of persons affected by Huntington's disease exhibit late onset. A preponderance of maternal transmission was noted in late-onset Huntington's disease. The clinical features resembled those of mid-life onset Huntington's disease but progressed more slowly. Neuropathological evaluation of two cases reveal less severe neuronal atrophy than for mid-life onset disease

Biochemical and molecular diagnosis of erythropoietic protoporphyria in an Ashkenazi Jewish family

Summary: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a rare hereditary disorder due to a partial deficiency of ferrochelatase (FECH). The genotype of EPP patients features a mutation on one allele of the FECH gene and a common hypomorphic FECH IVS3-48c on the other allele (M/c). The resulting enzyme activity in patients is ∼35% of that in normal individuals. Ferrochelatase deficiency results in the accumulation of protoporphyrin in the skin, which is responsible for the clinical symptom of cutaneous photosensitivity in patients. In this study, we report the identification of a novel FECH mutation delT23 in an 11-member EPP family of Jewish origin. Two EPP siblings shared an identical genotype of delT23/IVS3-48c (M/c). They were both photosensitive and showed highly increased erythrocyte protoporphyrin. The genotype of the patients' mother, who did not present with any EPP clinical symptoms, was delT23/IVS3-48t (M/t). The patients' father, an offspring of consanguineous parents, was homozygous IVS3-48 c/c. He exhibited a mild photosensitivity, and an increase of 4-fold in erythrocyte protoporphyrin. His FECH mRNA amount was 71% of that of genotype t/t. It is the first reported case of an individual with c/c genotype who exhibits both biochemical and clinical indications of EPP. These results suggest that IVS3-48c is a functional variant of ferrochelatase. The clinical symptoms and biochemical abnormalities in the patients' father could be the result of an interaction between genetic and environmental factors. In addition, the frequency of IVS3-48c in the Ashkenazi Jewish population was estimated at 8%, which is similar to that in the European population

A Hypothesis on Biological Protection from Space Radiation Through the Use of New Therapeutic Gases

Radiation exposure to astronauts could be a significant obstacle for long duration manned space exploration because of current uncertainties regarding the extent of biological effects. Furthermore, concepts for protective shielding also pose a technically challenging issue due to the nature of cosmic radiation and current mass and power constraints with modern exploration technology. The concern regarding exposure to cosmic radiation is the biological damage it induces. As damage is associated with increased oxidative stress, it is important and would be enabling to mitigate and/or prevent oxidative stress prior to the development of clinical symptoms and disease. This paper hypothesizes a "systems biology" approach in which a combination of chemical and biological mitigation techniques are used conjunctively. It proposes using new, therapeutic, medical gases as both chemical radioprotectors for radical scavenging and biological signaling molecules for management of the body s response to exposure. From reviewing radiochemistry of water, biological effects of CO, H2, NO, and H2S gas, and mechanisms of radiation biology, it is concluded that this approach may have great therapeutic potential for radiation exposure. Furthermore, it also appears to have similar potential for curtailing the pathogenesis of other diseases in which oxidative stress has been implicated including, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic inflammatory disease, hypertension, ischemia/reperfusion injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, parkinson s and alzheimer s disease, cataracts, and agin

Beyond deficit-based models of learners' cognition: Interpreting engineering students' difficulties with sense-making in terms of fine-grained epistemological and conceptual dynamics

Researchers have argued against deficit-based explanations of students' troubles with mathematical sense-making, pointing instead to factors such as epistemology: students' beliefs about knowledge and learning can hinder them from activating and integrating productive knowledge they have. In this case study of an engineering major solving problems (about content from his introductory physics course) during a clinical interview, we show that "Jim" has all the mathematical and conceptual knowledge he would need to solve a hydrostatic pressure problem that we posed to him. But he reaches and sticks with an incorrect answer that violates common sense. We argue that his lack of mathematical sense-making-specifically, translating and reconciling between mathematical and everyday/common-sense reasoning-stems in part from his epistemological views, i.e., his views about the nature of knowledge and learning. He regards mathematical equations as much more trustworthy than everyday reasoning, and he does not view mathematical equations as expressing meaning that tractably connects to common sense. For these reasons, he does not view reconciling between common sense and mathematical formalism as either necessary or plausible to accomplish. We, however, avoid a potential "deficit trap"-substituting an epistemological deficit for a concepts/skills deficit-by incorporating multiple, context-dependent epistemological stances into Jim's cognitive dynamics. We argue that Jim's epistemological stance contains productive seeds that instructors could build upon to support Jim's mathematical sense-making: He does see common-sense as connected to formalism (though not always tractably so) and in some circumstances this connection is both salient and valued.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of Engineering Educatio

Mutations in B-type natriuretic peptide mediating receptor-A selectivity

    Get PDF
AbstractLibraries of monovalent display-phage expressing mutant human B-type natriuretic peptide (hBNP) were used to identify variants that preferentially bind natriuretic peptide receptor-A (NPR-A) compared to receptor-C (NPR-C). Position 19 was a significant determinant of receptor specificity for hBNP display phage. The synthetic hBNP variant S19R had a 265-fold improved NPR-A binding over NPR-C, analogous to the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) specificity mutation G16R. Mutation of the last three residues of the hBNP disulfide ring, G23F/L24W/G25R, resulted in about 9-fold improved selectivity. The analogous mutations in ANP decreased NPR-A binding, suggesting divergence in the mechanism of NPR-A recognition

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) photodetectors were fabricated from high quality NixMg1-xO epitaxially grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on an approximately lattice matched MgO \u3c 100 \u3e substrate. A mid-range Ni composition (x=0.54) NixMg1-xO film was grown for DUV (lambda(peak) \u3c 300 nm) photoresponse and the film was characterized by reflected high-energy electron diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and optical transmission measurements. Photoconductive detectors were then fabricated by deposition of symmetric interdigitated contacts (10 nm Pt/150 nm Au) with contact separations of 5, 10, and 15 mu m. The detectors exhibited peak responsivities in the DUV (lambda(peak) approximate to 250 nm) as high as 12 mA/W, low dark currents (I-dark \u3c 25 nA), and DUV:visible ejection ratio of approximately 800:1
