Multiple Scales in Pati-Salam Unification Models

We investigate models where gauge unification (GUT) proceeds in steps that include Pati-Salam symmetry. Beyond the Standard Model, we allow for a well-defined set of small representations of the GUT gauge group. We show that all possible chains of Pati-Salam symmetry breaking can be realized in accordance with gauge-coupling unification. We identify, in particular, models with unification near the Planck scale, with intermediate left-right or SU(4) quark-lepton symmetries that are relevant for flavor physics, with new colored particles at accessible energies, and with an enlarged electroweak Higgs sector. 6. Weiterbildungsveranstaltung für Naturschutzbeauftragte des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt (NbBA)

Am 18. Februar 2012 fand im Landesamt für Umweltschutz (LAU) in Halle die 6. Weiterbildungsveranstaltung für die Naturschutzbeauftragten mit besonderen Aufgaben des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt statt. Hiermit sollte eine Tradition wiederbelebt werden, die in den letzten Jahren aufgrund der stetig wachsenden Aufgabenfelder in den Naturschutzverwaltungen weitgehend in den Hintergrund gerückt war. Die letzte Zusammenkunft fand am 25.1.2003 im Bundesamt für Züchtungsforschung in Quedlinburg statt (Schnitter 2011). Zur Tagung waren fast 70 Artgruppenspezialisten, Vertreter von Naturschutzbehörden sowie von Naturschutzverbänden, aber auch politische Mandatsträger angereist. Die Referate der Tagung bildeten sowohl das Spektrum der naturschutzfachlichen und ehrenamtlichen Arbeit in den Naturschutzverwaltungen als auch die aktuellen Entwicklungen im Naturschutz in Sachsen-Anhalt ab

Die Naturschutzbeauftragten mit besonderen Aufgaben des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt

Mit Wirkung vom 24.3.2011 trat in Sachsen-Anhalt die neue Verordnung über ehrenamtliche Naturschutzbeauftragte (GVBl. LSA Nr. 9/2011 S. 549–550) in Kraft. Die bisherige Regelung lief damit aus. Infolgedessen waren auch die Dienstausweise der „Naturschutzbeauftragten mit besonderen Aufgaben“ (NbBA) zu ersetzen, die ihre Gültigkeit zum 11.6.2011 verloren. Alle neuberufenen Naturschutzbeauftragten erhielten außerdem eine Bestellungsurkunde mit Benennung der Aufgaben und Befugnisse

Im Juni dieses Jahres wurden vom Landesamt für Umweltschutz des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt als Fachbehörde für Naturschutz „neue“ Naturschutzbeauftragte mit besonderen Aufgaben (NbBA) des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt berufen. Dies machte sich erforderlich, da die bisherige Verordnung (GVBl.LSA Nr. 4/1994 v. 21.01.1994) mit dem überarbeiteten Naturschutzgesetz des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt (GVBl. LSA Nr. 41/2004 v. 29.07.2004) außer Kraft gesetzt wurde

Untersuchung der Polyelektrolytadsorption an Monoschichten geladener Amphiphile

Polyelektrolyte sind in Natur und Technik weit verbreitet und werden für viele Anwendungen eingesetzt. Der Prozeß, der hinter vielen dieser Anwendungen steckt, ist das Phänomen der Polyelektrolytadsorption. Aufgrund ihrer Komplexität ist die Polyelektrolytadsorption bislang nur unzureichend verstanden. Dies macht die Suche nach geeigneten Modellsystemen mit klar definierten Strukturen notwendig, in denen die Einflußparameter variabel und systematisch untersucht werden können. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die Adsorption verschiedener Polyelektrolyte an Monoschichten geladener Amphiphile als Modelloberflächen untersucht. Neben verschiedenen linearen Polyelektrolyten wurden auch gezielt in Molmasse und Struktur eingestellte Poly(tert-butylacrylate) und Poly(4-vinylpyridine) mittels kontrolliert/lebend radikalischer Polymerisation hergestellt und polymeranalog zu den entsprechenden Polyelektrolyten umgesetzt. Durch die Verwendung multifunktioneller Initiatoren konnten auf diese Weise 4-, 6- und 12-Arm-Sterne hergestellt werden. Die Ergebnisse haben bestätigt, daß Amphiphilmonoschichten ein geeignetes Modellsystem zur Untersuchung der Polyelektrolytadsorption sind. Darüber hinaus konnte gezeigt werden, daß in diesem System auch die Dynamik des Adsorptionsprozesses erfasst und untersucht werden kann. Dazu wurden Brewster-Winkel-Helligkeits- und UV/Vis-Reflektivitäts-Messungen durchgeführt.Polyelectrolytes are common materials in nature and science and are used in various applications. Most of these applications are based on the process of polyelectrolyte adsorption. Due to its complexity polyelectrolyte adsoprtion is not yet fully understood. Therefore it is necessary to search for proper model systems with clearly defined conditions in which the influencing parameters can be systematically investigated. The adsorption of different polyelectrolytes to monolayers of charged amphiphiles used as model interfaces was studied in this thesis. To this end various linear polyelectrolytes were synthesized as well as poly(tert-butyl acrylates) and poly(4-vinylpyridines) adjusted to molar mass an polymer structure by using living/controlled radical polymerization. These polymers can be easily transformed to the corresponding polyelectrolytes via polymeranalogous reaction. Using multifunctional initiators polymer stars with 4, 6 and 12 arms were synthesized. The results confirmed that amphiphile monolayers are a suitable model system to investigate polyelectrolyte adsoprtion. Furthermore it was shown that it is possible to study the dynamics of the adsorption process with this model using Brewster-angle-brightness- and uv/vis-refelectivity-measurements

Fundamentalisms and Eurointegration: the Case of Bulgaria

FUNDAMENTALISMS AND EUROINTEGRATION: THE CASE OF BULGARIAObject of the study are contemporary manifestations of religious fundamentalism at the Balkans under conditions of concurrent eurointegration (the case of Bulgaria is considered in particular). Followed are the major synchronous and diachronous factors determining the specificity of fundamentalist phenomena in the context of the Balkans, Orthodoxy, and Europe. The conclusion is that both historical merits and current regulatory and legal realities suggest rather a peaceful picture of interconfessional communication. An attempt is made at getting behind the curtain of official political discourse where alarming trends toward religious intolerance are found both on the part of Islam and of the Orthodox Church.Secularism which is always inherent in the European talking on religious phenomena is conceived as inadequate and futureless in the interpretation of realities stageably existing in the „presecularity” of premodern time – like the Orthodoxy and Islam at the Balkans

Genexpressionsanalyse der Zusammensetzung des Microenvironments im klassischen Hodgkin- Lymphom bei Erstdiagnose und im Rezidiv

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma is dominated by the nonneoplastic microenvironment, while the neoplastic Hodgkin-Reed-Sternberg cells compose only a minority of cells in the lymphoma tissue. The histological subtypes of classical Hodgkin lymphoma are defined based on the composition of the nonneoplastic microenvironment. Furthermore, gene expression profiling studies have suggested that the microenvironment at diagnosis might be associated with the clinical course of the disease. In this study we analyzed sequential biopsy specimens obtained at diagnosis and at relapse from the same patient for morphology, immunophenotype and gene expression profiling using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue and Nanostring/nCounter technology. The morphological subtype changed between primary and relapse biopsy in 20% of cases. The immunophenotype was stable with respect to CD30, CD3 and LMP1 but variable with respect to CD15 and CD20 expression. Gene expression revealed 8 up- and 20 down-regulated genes at relapse (p≤0.05) with a consistent logarithmic fold change direction in at least 75% of all cases. We found discrepancies between gene expression suggestive of cell types and number of cells assessed by immunohistochemistry. Our data illustrate microenvironmental dynamics over the cause of the disease and emphasize the importance of correlating gene expression with cell counts to draw a clear picture of the microenvironment in Hodgkin Lymphoma

Portrayals of gender diversity in Finnish literature for children and young adults published in the turn of the 2020s

Käsitykset sukupuolesta ja sen moninaisuudesta ovat laajentuneet ja tarkentuneet viimeisten vuosikymmenien aikana. Samaan aikaan esimerkiksi sukupuolivähemmistöjen asema on ollut monipuolisesti esillä julkisessa keskustelussa. Yhtenä perusopetuksen tehtävänä on laajentaa tietoa ja ymmärrystä sukupuolen moninaisuudesta, ja opettajilla on velvollisuus ottaa sukupuolen moninaisuus huomioon ammatillisessa työssään. Muun muassa lasten- ja nuortenkirjallisuus toimii välineenä, jonka avulla moninaisuutta voidaan käsitellä koulukontekstissa. Kaunokirjallisuuden lukeminen tarjoaa mahdollisuuksia ymmärtää paremmin sekä itseä että ympäröivää todellisuutta, ja jokaisella lapsella ja nuorella tulisi olla mahdollisuus lukea samaistuttavia teoksia, joihin peilata itseään, perhettään ja ympäristöään. Vaikka nykyisessä lasten- ja nuortenkirjallisuudessa käsitellään yleisesti ottaen laajasti eri aiheita, näyttäytyy sukupuolen moninaisuus edelleen suhteellisen harvinaisena teemana. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena olikin tutkia sukupuolen moninaisuuden kuvausta 2020-luvun taitteessa julkaistuissa lasten- ja nuortenkirjoissa. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena eli kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysiä, jonka avulla analysoitiin neljää sukupuolen moninaisuutta käsittelevää kaunokirjallista teosta; kahta lasten kuvakirjaa ja kahta nuortenromaania. Taustalla on ajatus sukupuolen moninaisuutta käsittelevien teosten hyödyntämisestä osana perusopetusta. Lasten kuvakirjoissa sukupuolen moninaisuutta kuvattiin lapsentasoisesti ja tarinoiden sanomana oli jokaisen hyväksyminen, arvostaminen ja kunnioittaminen juuri sellaisena kuin hän on. Tarinoissa tuotiin esille myös ajatus kaikkien yhdenvertaisuudesta erilaisuudesta huolimatta. Nuortenromaaneissa nuortenkirjallisuudelle tyypilliseen tapaan syvennyttiin teini-ikäisen päähenkilön identiteettiin liittyviin kysymyksiin. Molemmissa nuortenromaaneissa sukupuolen moninaisuuden teemaa käsiteltiin päähenkilön oman sukupuoli-identiteetin reflektoinnin sekä perhekonfliktien ja yhteiskunnassa vallitsevan ymmärtämättömyyden kuvauksen kautta.The understanding of gender and its diversity has expanded in recent decades while the status and rights of gender minorities have been actively featured in public debate. Expanding knowledge of and understanding gender diversity is one of the objectives of basic education in Finland and teachers are obliged to take gender diversity into account in their professional work. Literature for children and young adults can be used as a tool to address diversity in a school context. Reading fiction provides opportunities to understand both ourselves and the world we live in. Every child and adolescent should have the opportunity to read books in which they identify at least some characters of the fiction as well as their family and their living environment in. Even though a wide range of topics are covered in the current literature for children and young adults, gender diversity still appears to be a relatively rare theme. The purpose of this study was to analyse how gender diversity is portrayed in books for children and young adults published in the turn of the 2020s. The study was carried out as a qualitative study. The research method used was data-oriented content analysis, which was used to analyse four literary works that cover gender diversity: two children’s picture books and two youth novels. The aim is to examine how books about gender diversity could be used as a part of basic education. In children’s picture books, gender diversity was portrayed in a way that is understandable for children and the message of the stories was that everyone should be accepted, valued, and respected just the way they are. The stories also brought up the idea of everyone's equality despite our differences. In the youth novels the identity of the teenage protagonist was closely examined. In both youth novels the theme of gender diversity was addressed through the reflection of the protagonist’s own gender identity and the description of family conflicts and misunderstanding occurring in our society
