Visual function due to regeneration of optic nerve or optic tract through peripheral nerve homografts
Segments of sciatic nerve from one leg were used to induce regeneration of transected optic nerve (ON) or tract in Syrian hamsters. In the first group, the nerve graft was sutured to the stump of the transected ON of the right eye in young adult animals, and the other end was placed below the surface of the ipsilateral superior colliculus (SC); the opposite eye was removed. In one animal, orienting movements in the wrong direction were elicited and recorded on videotape, beginning when the animal was more than 1.5 yr old, over 1 yr after surgery. In the second group, a similar procedure was used but with the nerve going to the contralateral SC. In 3 of 4 long-term survivors, visually elicited turning was obtained and recorded, most reliably in the final 4 mo of their 2-yr life. Regenerating retinofugal axons were traced and their terminations in SC reconstructed using a CT-B procedure and immunohistochemistry (secondary AB conjugated to Alexa-488) and fluorescence microscopy. The visually unresponsive animal had no regeneration, and the most responsive animal had the greatest amount of regeneration. In a 3rd procedure, the right brachium of SC was transected, and 2 or 3 segments of sciatic nerve were implanted as bridges to elicit optic tract regeneration. The first 3 of these animals were operated at age 13-19 days; considerable regeneration was verified anatomically in each case, after behavioral demonstration of visual orienting.

Searching (the) FIRST radio arcs near ACO clusters
Gravitational lensing (GL) of distant radio sources by galaxy clusters should
produce radio arc(let)s. We extracted radio sources from the FIRST survey near
Abell cluster cores and found their radio position angles to be uniformly
distributed with respect to the cluster centres. This result holds even when we
restrict the sample to the richest or most centrally condensed clusters, and to
sources with high S/N and large axial ratio. Our failure to detect GL with
statistical methods may be due to poor cluster centre positions. We did not
find convincing candidates for arcs either. Our result agrees with theoretical
estimates predicting that surveys much deeper than FIRST are required to detect
the effect. This is in apparent conflict with the detection of such an effect

Effect of root curvature on post length in the restoration of endodontically treated premolars
– Two hundred and eighteen bi-rooted maxillary premolars were examined radio graphically to determine the length from the apex at which root curvature occurred. The information may serve as a guide in determining post preparation length. The results of the study indicated that the lingual root was slightly straighter than the buccal root. SIMcheck:A toolbox for successful super-resolution structured illumination microscopy
Three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) is a versatile and accessible method for super-resolution fluorescence imaging, but generating high-quality data is challenging, particularly for non-specialist users. We present SIMcheck, a suite of ImageJ plugins enabling users to identify and avoid common problems with 3D-SIM data and assess resolution and data quality through objective control parameters. Additionally, SIMcheck provides advanced calibration tools and utilities for common image processing tasks. This open-source software is applicable to all commercial and custom platforms and will promote routine application of super-resolution SIM imaging in cell biology

SDSS-II SUPERNOVA SURVEY: AN ANALYSIS of the LARGEST SAMPLE of TYPE IA SUPERNOVAE and CORRELATIONS with HOST-GALAXY SPECTRAL PROPERTIES

The final version is available from the Institute of Physics via http://dx.doi.org/10.3847/0004-637X/821/2/115Using the largest single-survey sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) to date, we study the relationship between properties of SNe Ia and those of their host galaxies, focusing primarily on correlations with Hubble residuals (HRs). Our sample consists of 345 photometrically classified or spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia discovered as part of the SDSS-II Supernova Survey (SDSS-SNS). This analysis utilizes host-galaxy spectroscopy obtained during the SDSS-I/II spectroscopic survey and from an ancillary program on the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey that obtained spectra for nearly all host galaxies of SDSS-II SN candidates. In addition, we use photometric host-galaxy properties from the SDSS-SNS data release such as host stellar mass and star formation rate. We confirm the well-known relation between HR and host-galaxy mass and find a 3.6σ significance of a nonzero linear slope. We also recover correlations between HR and host-galaxy gas-phase metallicity and specific star formation rate as they are reported in the literature. With our large data set, we examine correlations between HR and multiple host-galaxy properties simultaneously and find no evidence of a significant correlation. We also independently analyze our spectroscopically confirmed and photometrically classified SNe Ia and comment on the significance of similar combined data sets for future surveys.This material is based on work supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship under Grant No. DGE-1321851. How does gender influence the recognition of cardiovascular risk and adherence to self-care recommendations? : a study in polish primary care
Background:
Studies have shown a correlation between gender and an ability to change lifestyle to reduce the risk of disease. However, the results of these studies are ambiguous, especially where a healthy lifestyle is concerned. Additionally, health behaviors are strongly modified by culture and the environment. Psychological factors also substantially affect engagement with disease-related lifestyle interventions. This study aimed to examine whether there are differences between men and women in the frequency of health care behavior for the purpose of reducing cardiovascular risk (CVR), as well as cognitive appraisal of this type of risk. We also aimed to identify the psychological predictors of engaging in recommended behavior for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease after providing information about this risk in men and women.
Methods:
A total of 134 consecutive eligible patients in a family practice entered a longitudinal study. At initial consultation, the individual’s CVR and associated health burden was examined, and preventive measures were recommended by the physician. Self-care behavior, cognitive appraisal of risk, and coping styles were then assessed using psychological questionnaires. Six months after the initial data collection, the frequency of subjects’ self-care behavior was examined.
Results:
We found an increase in health care behavior after providing information regarding the rate of CVR in both sexes; this increase was greater for women than for men. Women followed self-care guidelines more often than men, particularly for preventive measures and dietary advice. Women were more inclined to recognize their CVR as a challenge. Coping style, cognitive appraisal, age, level of health behaviors at baseline and CVR values accounted for 48% of the variance in adherence to self-care guidelines in women and it was 52% in men. In women, total risk of CVD values were most important, while in men, cognitive appraisal of harm/loss was most important.
Conclusions:
Different predictors of acquisition of health behavior are encountered in men and women. Our results suggest that gender-adjusted motivation models influencing the recognition process need to be considered to optimize compliance in patients with CVR
Upper atmospheres and ionospheres of planets and satellites
The upper atmospheres of the planets and their satellites are more directly
exposed to sunlight and solar wind particles than the surface or the deeper
atmospheric layers. At the altitudes where the associated energy is deposited,
the atmospheres may become ionized and are referred to as ionospheres. The
details of the photon and particle interactions with the upper atmosphere
depend strongly on whether the object has anintrinsic magnetic field that may
channel the precipitating particles into the atmosphere or drive the
atmospheric gas out to space. Important implications of these interactions
include atmospheric loss over diverse timescales, photochemistry and the
formation of aerosols, which affect the evolution, composition and remote
sensing of the planets (satellites). The upper atmosphere connects the planet
(satellite) bulk composition to the near-planet (-satellite) environment.
Understanding the relevant physics and chemistry provides insight to the past
and future conditions of these objects, which is critical for understanding
their evolution. This chapter introduces the basic concepts of upper
atmospheres and ionospheres in our solar system, and discusses aspects of their
neutral and ion composition, wind dynamics and energy budget. This knowledge is
key to putting in context the observations of upper atmospheres and haze on
exoplanets, and to devise a theory that explains exoplanet demographics.Comment: Invited Revie
Dbx1-Expressing Cells Are Necessary for the Survival of the Mammalian Anterior Neural and Craniofacial Structures
Development of the vertebrate forebrain and craniofacial structures are intimately linked processes, the coordinated growth of these tissues being required to ensure normal head formation. In this study, we identify five small subsets of progenitors expressing the transcription factor dbx1 in the cephalic region of developing mouse embryos at E8.5. Using genetic tracing we show that dbx1-expressing cells and their progeny have a modest contribution to the forebrain and face tissues. However, their genetic ablation triggers extensive and non cell-autonomous apoptosis as well as a decrease in proliferation in surrounding tissues, resulting in the progressive loss of most of the forebrain and frontonasal structures. Targeted ablation of the different subsets reveals that the very first dbx1-expressing progenitors are critically required for the survival of anterior neural tissues, the production and/or migration of cephalic neural crest cells and, ultimately, forebrain formation. In addition, we find that the other subsets, generated at slightly later stages, each play a specific function during head development and that their coordinated activity is required for accurate craniofacial morphogenesis. Our results demonstrate that dbx1-expressing cells have a unique function during head development, notably by controlling cell survival in a non cell-autonomous manner
