This article discusses the The Zaydi Manuscript Tradition (ZMT) initiative. The initiative aims to salvage the Zaydi literary tradition by gathering digital surrogates of as many Zaydi manuscripts as possible in a single repository and providing comprehensive and systematic open access to them for scholars worldwide, regardless of whether the physical manuscripts are preserved in Europe or in North America, in Yemen or elsewhere in the Middle East. The ZMT is a joint project initiated by the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Princeton, in partnership with the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) at Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota. Work on the ZMT began in September 2016 and to date the project comprises some 1,000 digitized manuscripts from several European and Yemeni libraries which are accessible online through the project\u27s Portal and HMML\u27s virtual reading room

Out of a cDNA expression library of pumpkin seedlings a histidine kinase homologous to the cytokinin receptor AHK4 (CRE1/WOL) in Arabidopsis thaliana was isolated. The gene named CmCRE1 (C. maxima cytokinin response) shows 80% similarity and 72% identity to AHK4 and contains an open reading frame of 2943 nucleotides encoding 981 amino acid residues. Functional expression of CmCRE1 in the yeast mutant sln1-Delta confirmed the ability of the histidine kinase to sense the different cytokinins t-zeatin, benzyl adenine (BA), isopentenyladenine (IP), and kinetin and to activate a two-component signal transduction system. Two different yeast clones expressing CmCRE1, named CmCRE1-1 and CmCRE1-7, react differently on the applied concentrations of the mentioned cytokinins. This is possibly based on an amino acid substitution in a conserved region in the histidine kinase domain near to the phosphorylatable histidine residue. Expression studies carried out by competitive RT-PCR lead to a constitutive transcription of CmCRE1 in different tissues and developmental stages of the pumpkin seedlings in dependency on endogenous and exogenous factors. Moreover was shown that in contrast to AHK4 expression of CmCRE1 in intact plants is not upregulated by exogenous application of t-zeatin

In a recently published article, Daniel Gimaret has offered a first study on the Kitāb Hidāyat al-mustaršidīn, Abū Bakr al-Bāqillānī’s (d. 403/1013) most comprehensive and, as it would seem, last work in the field of kalām. Gimaret consulted and described two manuscripts containing different parts of the work, viz. ms. Qarawiyyīn 692 (Fez) and ms. al-Azhar III 337, ʿilm al-kalām [21] 342 (Cairo). The purpose of the present article is to introduce two additional partial manuscripts of al-Bāqillānī’s work, ms. St. Petersburg, The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, # C 329 and ms. Tashkent, al-Biruni Institute of Oriental Studies, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, # 3296, constituting Volumes Five and Eleven of the work.

The cultural and intellectual history of non-Muslim communities in the Islamicate world and the multiple encounters between the representatives of the various denominations have received enhanced scholarly attention over the past decade. Apart from the numerous thriving book series devoted to non-Muslims under Muslim rule, mention should be made of various major publication projects such as the Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World (ed. Norman A. Stillman et al., Leiden, Brill, 2010), the..
