A model for orientation effects in electronâtransfer reactions
A method for solving the singleâparticle Schrödinger equation with an oblate spheroidal potential of finite depth is presented. The wave functions are then used to calculate the matrix element T_BA which appears in theories of nonadiabatic electron transfer. The results illustrate the effects of mutual orientation and separation of the two centers on TBA. Trends in these results are discussed in terms of geometrical and nodal structure effects. Analytical expressions related to T_BA for states of spherical wells are presented and used to analyze the nodal structure effects for T_BA for the spheroidal wells
Correctness of an STM Haskell implementation
A concurrent implementation of software transactional memory in Concurrent Haskell using a call-by-need functional language with processes and futures is given. The description of the small-step operational semantics is precise and explicit, and employs an early abort of conflicting transactions. A proof of correctness of the implementation is given for a contextual semantics with may- and should-convergence. This implies that our implementation is a correct evaluator for an abstract specification equipped with a big-step semantics
Delay Management with Re-Routing of Passengers
The question of delay management is whether trains should wait for a delayed feeder trainor should depart on time. In classical delay management models passengers always taketheir originally planned route. In this paper, we propose a model where re-routing ofpassengers is incorporated. To describe the problem we represent it as an event-activity network similar to the oneused in classical delay management, with some additional events to incorporate originand destination of the passengers. We present an integer programming formulation ofthis problem. Furthermore, we discuss the variant in which we assume fixed costs formaintaining connections and we present a polynomial algorithm for the special case ofonly one origin-destination pair. Finally, computational experiments based on real-worlddata from Netherlands Railways show that significant improvements can be obtained bytaking the re-routing of passengers into account in the model.public transportation;OD-pairs;delay management;re-routing
Pair creation and plasma oscillations
We describe aspects of particle creation in strong fields using a quantum
kinetic equation with a relaxation-time approximation to the collision term.
The strong electric background field is determined by solving Maxwell's
equation in tandem with the Vlasov equation. Plasma oscillations appear as a
result of feedback between the background field and the field generated by the
particles produced. The plasma frequency depends on the strength of the initial
background field and the collision frequency, and is sensitive to the necessary
momentum-dependence of dressed-parton masses.Comment: 11 pages, revteX, epsfig.sty, 5 figures; Proceedings of 'Quark Matter

Robust Trapped-Ion Quantum Logic Gates by Continuous Dynamical Decoupling
We introduce a novel scheme that combines phonon-mediated quantum logic gates
in trapped ions with the benefits of continuous dynamical decoupling. We
demonstrate theoretically that a strong driving of the qubit decouples it from
external magnetic-field noise, enhancing the fidelity of two-qubit quantum
gates. Moreover, the scheme does not require ground-state cooling, and is
inherently robust to undesired ac-Stark shifts. The underlying mechanism can be
extended to a variety of other systems where a strong driving protects the
quantum coherence of the qubits without compromising the two-qubit couplings.Comment: Slightly longer than the published versio
Phase diagram of the penetrable square well-model
We study a system formed by soft colloidal spheres attracting each other via
a square-well potential, using extensive Monte Carlo simulations of various
nature. The softness is implemented through a reduction of the infinite part of
the repulsive potential to a finite one. For sufficiently low values of the
penetrability parameter we find the system to be Ruelle stable with square-well
like behavior. For high values of the penetrability the system is
thermodynamically unstable and collapses into an isolated blob formed by a few
clusters each containing many overlapping particles. For intermediate values of
the penetrability the system has a rich phase diagram with a partial lack of
thermodynamic consistency.Comment: 6 pages and 5 figure
