    Multi-core Interference-Sensitive WCET Analysis Leveraging Runtime Resource Capacity Enforcement

    The performance and power efficiency of multi-core processors are attractive features for safety-critical applications, as in avionics. But increased integration and average-case performance optimizations pose challenges when deploying them for such domains. In this paper we propose a novel approach to compute a interference-sensitive Worst-Case Execution Time (isWCET) considering variable accesses delays due to the concurrent use of shared resources in multi-core processors. Thereby we tackle the problem of temporal partitioning as it is required by safety-critical applications. In particular, we introduce additional phases to state-of-the-art timing analysis techniques to analyse an applications resource usage and compute an interference delay. We further complement the offline analysis with a runtime monitoring concept to enforce resource usage guarantees. The concepts are evaluated on Freescale's P4080 multi-core processor in combination with SYSGO's commercial real-time operating system PikeOS and AbsInt's timing analysis framework aiT. We abstract real applications' behavior using a representative task set of the EEMBC Autobench benchmark suite. Our results show a reduction of up to 75% of the multi-core Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET), while implementing full transparency to the temporal and functional behavior of applications, enabling the seamless integration of legacy applications

    Experiences and Future of Using VR in the Construction Sector

    Living in the era of digitalization shapes more or less all the aspects of one's life. The multitude of available technologies extends the range of tools, established processes, and available affordances in many spheres. Cities of the future will not only impact the living patterns of their inhabitants but also require special conditions and requirements for their planning and design. Virtual reality as an interactive tool for visualization and urban planning is no more tomorrow’s technology, as it can be seen from the appearance of cheaper and portable virtual reality devices. However, we still lack established routine and multidisciplinary best practices for designing VR educational applications. There are also not enough “visionary approaches” attempting to cross-sectoral exploitation of technologies. In this paper we will try to extrapolate and extend learning use cases of construction and mechatronics to the broader areas of construction and planning sector. We will discuss our experiences and use-cases of integrating innovative visualizations tools in the learning context of construction and planning related fields. Based on this, we will discuss potential applications and links to other disciplines and their integration into the construction and planning sector

    Diagnosing coronary artery disease by sound analysis from coronary stenosis induced turbulent blood flow: diagnostic performance in patients with stable angina pectoris

    Optimizing risk assessment may reduce use of advanced diagnostic testing in patients with symptoms suggestive of stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Detection of diastolic murmurs from post-stenotic coronary turbulence with an acoustic sensor placed on the chest wall can serve as an easy, safe, and low-cost supplement to assist in the diagnosis of CAD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of an acoustic test (CAD-score) to detect CAD and compare it to clinical risk stratification and coronary artery calcium score (CACS). We prospectively enrolled patients with symptoms of CAD referred to either coronary computed tomography or invasive coronary angiography (ICA). All patients were tested with the CAD-score system. Obstructive CAD was defined as more than 50 % diameter stenosis diagnosed by quantitative analysis of the ICA. In total, 255 patients were included and obstructive CAD was diagnosed in 63 patients (28 %). Diagnostic accuracy evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curves was 72 % for the CAD-score, which was similar to the Diamond–Forrester clinical risk stratification score, 79 % (p = 0.12), but lower than CACS, 86 % (p < 0.01). Combining the CAD-score and Diamond–Forrester score, AUC increased to 82 %, which was significantly higher than the standalone CAD-score (p < 0.01) and Diamond–Forrester score (p < 0.05). Addition of the CAD-score to the Diamond–Forrester score increased correct reclassification, categorical net-reclassification index = 0.31 (p < 0.01). This study demonstrates the potential use of an acoustic system to identify CAD. The combination of clinical risk scores and an acoustic test seems to optimize patient selection for diagnostic investigation.Danish National Business Innovation Fund and Acarix A/S

    Geostatistical Analysis of White Matter Lesions in Multiple Sclerosis Identifies Gender Differences in Lesion Evolution

    Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with presumed autoimmune origin. The development of lesions within the gray matter and white matter, which are highly variable with respect to number, total volume, morphology and spatial evolution and which only show a limited correlation with clinical disability, is a hallmark of the disease. Population-based studies indicate a distinct outcome depending on gender. Here, we studied gender-related differences in the evolution of white matter MS-lesions (MS-WML) in early MS by using geostatistical methods. Within a 3 years observation period, a female and a male MS patient group received disease modifying drugs and underwent standardized annual brain magnetic resonance imaging, accompanied by neurological examination. MS-WML were automatically extracted and the derived binary lesion masks were subject to geostatistical analysis, yielding quantitative spatial-statistics metrics on MS-WML pattern morphology and total lesion volume (TLV). Through the MS-lesion pattern discrimination plot, the following differences were disclosed: corresponding to gender and MS-WML pattern morphology at baseline, two female subgroups (F1, F2) and two male subgroups (M1, M2) are discerned that follow a distinct MS-WML pattern evolution in space and time. F1 and M1 start with medium-level MS-WML pattern smoothness and TLV, both behave longitudinally quasi-static. By contrast, F2 and M2 start with high-level MS-WML pattern smoothness and medium-level TLV. F2 and M2 longitudinal development is characterized by strongly diminishing MS-WML pattern smoothness and TLV, i.e., continued shrinking and break-up of MS-WML. As compared to the male subgroup M2, the female subgroup F2 shows continued, increased MS-WML pattern smoothness and TLV. Data from neurological examination suggest a correlation of MS-WML pattern morphology metrics and EDSS. Our results justify detailed studies on gender-related differences
