    myCopter: Enabling Technologies for Personal Air Transport Systems

    This paper describes the European Commission Framework 7 funded project myCopter (2011-2014). The project is still at an early stage so the paper starts with the current transportation issues faced by developed countries and describes a means to solve them through the use of personal aerial transportation. The concept of personal air vehicles (PAV) is briefly reviewed and how this project intends to tackle the problem from a different perspective described. It is argued that the key reason that many PAV concepts have failed is because the operational infrastructure and socio-economic issues have not been properly addressed; rather, the start point has been the design of the vehicle itself. Some of the key aspects that would make a personal aerial transport system (PATS) viable include the required infrastructure and associated technologies, the skill levels and machine interfaces needed by the occupant or pilot and the views of society as a whole on the acceptability of such a proposition. The myCopter project will use these areas to explore the viability of PAVs within a PATS. The paper provides an overview of the project structure, the roles of the partners, and hence the available research resources, and some of the early thinking on each of the key project topic areas

An initial reference set of PAV requirements has been collated. A non-physical flight simulation model capable of providing a wide range of handling qualities characteristics has been developed and its function has undergone limited verification. Results from this exercise show that the model behaves as intended and that it can deliver a predictable range of vehicle dynamics. The future direction of the themes of work described within the paper are then described

    Roadmap Umwelttechnologien 2020 - State-of-the-Art-Report (Kurzfassung)

    Globale Umweltprobleme wie der Klimawandel, die Verknappung des Süßwasserdargebots, der Verlust an Biodiversität oder der rasant steigende Verbrauch nicht erneuerbarer Rohstoffe werden den Handlungsdruck im Umweltbereich in den nächsten Jahrzehnten deutlich erhöhen. Obwohl viele der heutigen Umweltprobleme direkt oder indirekt durch Technik verursacht sind, beinhalten moderne Umwelttechnologien gleichzeitig das Potential zu ihrer Bewältigung. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht das BMBF-Projekt „Roadmap Umwelttechnologien 2020“ welche Beiträge Forschung und Technik für künftige Umweltinnovationen leisten können. Ziel des Projekts ist es, strategische Handlungsoptionen für die Forschungsförderung und die Unterstützung des Wissenstransfers in die Praxis aufzuzeigen. Als erstes Ergebnis des Projekts wurden in einem umfassenden State-of-the-Art-Report, Umweltprobleme und zugehörige technische Lösungsansätze entlang von sieben Umwelthandlungsfeldern dargestellt. Diese sind: Klimaschutz, Luftreinhaltung, Wasserschutz, Bodenschutz, Schonung endlicher Ressourcen, Abfallwirtschaft, Erhalt von Natur und Biodiversität. Der Report gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über reife Technologien und ihr Marktumfeld, neue Technologien und ihre Potentiale sowie mögliche Hemmnisse, die der Weiterentwicklung und Marktdurchdringung im Weg stehen. In der hier vorgelegten Kurzfassung des State-of-the-Art-Reports sind wesentliche Ergebnisse aus den sieben Handlungsfeldern zusammengefasst. Jedem Handlungsfeld ist ein so genannter „Kompass“ zugeordnet, der das Beziehungsgeflecht von Problemen, Lösungsansätzen und Technologien grafisch darstellt

    Transport demand evolution in Europe - factors of change, scenarios and challenges

    In the transport sector, where change comes with inertia and investments are made with a long term perspective, decision makers need to consider how the future may look like in the very long term. The work presented in this paper is a scenario analysis focusing on the evolution of transport demand towards 2050, aiming to identify related challenges for European industrial and policy players. It follows up on the work of other recent attempts to study the future of transport from a European perspective, integrating findings from these studies, updating new trends and applying a specific scenario analysis methodology relying also on expert consultation. The diversity of the scenarios created unfolds aspects of the future transport system with rather different outcomes on issues like the volume of transport, travel motives, the prevalent spatial scales of transport and logistics, people’s preferences towards different transport attributes, the relevancy of the State versus the private initiative in transport production, the level of competition, or the relative importance of environment and resource scarcity in setting an agenda for innovation and regulations. Beyond the subsequent challenges and opportunities identified in this work, the scenarios developed may be a useful basis for individual actors of distinct backgrounds to build their own specific futures, supporting them in defining strategies for the future
