    The LHCb upgrade I

    Get PDF
The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software

Preliminary Report on an Agar-Gel Immunodiffusion Test for Pseudorabies

    No full text
Pseudorabies is a disease which may affect North Dakota hog production if infected animals are introduced to the state. The test for Pseudorabies now in use is difficult and expensive. An agar-gel immunodiffusion (AGID) antigen for Pseudorabies testing is described. Results obtained from AGID proved to be at least as reliable as the currently approved test while reducing testing time and difficulty

Detection of Colostral Antibodies to Ovine Progressive Pneumonia Virus

    No full text
The subject is the attempt to produce reliable detection of antibodies in the colostrum to facilitate ease of sample collection by herdsmen. These samples could be frozen. The study in the article indicated that antibody to OPP virus was detectable in colostrum with the AGID test

    Control of Ovine Progressive Pneumonia

    No full text
This article presents an investigation that further demonstrates that OPP infection in sheep can be eliminated and controlled by utilizing the agar gel immunodiffusion test and the removal of seropositive sheep from the involved flock. The second approach would consist of testing and placing all reactors in a separate flock on the same premises and obtaining some replacements from the lambs of OPP positive ewes

The Effects of Intubation Feeding of the Newborn Calf

    No full text
The article is about the forced feeding of calves. If large quanties of electrolytes that contained fermentable compounds were administered via intubation (forced feeding), adverse effects might occur

A Two-Year Study of Vaccination in the Prevention of Bovine E. Coli Diarrhea

    No full text
This is a discussion of a two year study on vaccination in the prevention of bovine E. Coli Diarrhea. Investigations have demonstrated many causes of diarrhea in calves, including management and infectious agents (34, 73). The infectious agents presently recognized as the causative agents of diarrhea include many viruses such as rotavirus, IBR and BVD. In addition, bacteria including the Salmonella spp., Clostridium spp., and Escherichia coli (E. coli) have frequently been associated with calf diarrhea (84)
