    Increasing the Proton Intensity of PS and SPS

    Recently, a series of meetings were organised with PS and SPS participants, to discuss the possibilities of increasing the proton intensity on the SPS targets (with particular emphasis to CNGS) as well as ISOLDE and nTOF. Increasing the brilliance of the LHC beam, as required for ultimate LHC performance, was also discussed. Several schemes were proposed, as a staged approach, i.e. starting from the most simple and cheap, though difficult, to the more advanced and expensive. After comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods, three basic schemes were retained as candidates for further investigations and as good / necessary starting points for further improvements. Chapter 1 is devoted to PSB and PS issues and contains essentially a description of the three selected schemes. Chapter 2 deals with limitations in the SPS. Chapter 3 is a synthesis of basic conclusions. In the Appendix, a work-plan is presented for PSB and PS theoretical and experimental studies with a time estimate for preliminary results

    The k-Coloring problem is to decide whether a graph can be colored with at most k colors such that no two adjacent vertices receive the same color. The Listk-Coloring problem requires in addition that every vertex u must receive a color from some given set L(u)⊆{1,…,k}. Let Pn denote the path on n vertices, and G+H and rH the disjoint union of two graphs G and H and r copies of H, respectively. For any two fixed integers k and r, we show that Listk-Coloring can be solved in polynomial time for graphs with no induced rP1+P5, hereby extending the result of Hoàng, Kamiński, Lozin, Sawada and Shu for graphs with no induced P5. Our result is tight; we prove that for any graph H that is a supergraph of P1+P5 with at least 5 edges, already List 5-Coloring is NP-complete for graphs with no induced H

    Compressive stenosis of the left hepatic vein as a pathogenesis of postresectional liver failure: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Postresectional liver failure (PLF) is a devastating and fatal complication of major hepatic resection, and we do not have a full understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms involved. No reliable treatment other than liver transplantation currently exists for PLF.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 46-year-old Japanese man experienced PLF after an extended right hepatectomy for liver malignancy. Seven months after surgery, the patient's Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score had reached 23. Doppler ultrasound study and three-dimensional computed tomography images showed a stenosed left hepatic vein compressed by surrounding hypertrophied hepatic parenchyma. Transluminal balloon angioplasty and stent placement therapy were conducted eight months after surgery. The pressure gradient between the hepatic vein and right atrium decreased from 13 to 3 mmHg after stent placement. Thereafter, the patient recovered.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Hepatic venous compression by surrounding hypertrophied hepatic parenchyma might, at least in part, be associated with the occurrence of PLF. Surgeons should bear this possibility in mind when confronted with cases of PLF, as early diagnosis and stent placement improves patients' chances of recovery.</p

    LHC Luminosity and energy upgrade: A Feasibility Study

    We discuss a possible staged upgrade of the LHC and of its injectors, with a view to increasing the luminosity from the nominal 10**34 cm**-2s**-1 to 10**35 cm**-2s**-1 in each of the two high-luminosity experiments. We also consider possible scenarios for an upgrade to a proton beam energy of about 14 TeV. Starting from beam dynamics considerations and fundamental limitations of the hardware subsystems, we derive realistic requirements for the major components, such as superconducting magnets, cryogenic and RF systems, beam dump and vacuum. We also discuss a novel approach to the optimization of the collider performance, compatible with the beam-beam limit for high intensity proton bunches or long "super-bunches", and sketch a new design of the interaction regions, including an alternative beam crossing scheme. Finally we identify further studies required for an LHC performance upgrade and propose an R&D programm

    Acceleration of lead ions in the CERN PS booster and the CERN PS

    The new CERN Heavy Ion Accelerating Facility also requires besides a new Linac substantial modifications of existing accelerators. They are imposed by the low speed and the low intensity of the ion beam and, crucially at low energy, by the short lifetime of the partially stripped ions due to charge exchange with the atoms of the residual gas. The upgraded vacuum system hits the limits of a non-bakeable machine and consequently the acceleration had to be sped up by all means. In the Booster this led to injection and RF capture on a fast-rising magnet cycle and a new digital RF beam control system. Beam current transformers had to be replaced by new, heavily shielded ones. Other modifications include a new staircase magnet to distribute ions over the four Booster rings, lengthening of septa and kicker pulses, plus new, bakeable extraction septa and an energy stabilizing RF loop on the flat top in the CPS, and a stripper in the transfer line to the SPS
