Document Retrieval Using The MPS Information Server (A Report on the TREC-6 Experiment)

    No full text
This paper summarizes the results of the experiments conducted by FS Consulting, Inc. as part of the Six Text Retrieval Experiment Conference (TREC-6). We participated in Category C and ran the ad-hoc experiments, producingthree sets of official results (fsclt6, fsclt6r and fsclt6t), only one of which was judged (fsclt6). We also produced two sets of unofficial results as part of a database merging experiment that we ran (fsclt6m2 and fsclt6m5). Our long-term research interest is in building information retrieval systems that help users find information to solve real-world problems. Our TREC-6 participation centered on two goals: to see if automatic query reformulatio

This paper summarizes the results of the experiments conducted by FS Consulting, Inc. as part of the Fifth Text Retrieval Experiment Conference (TREC-5). We participated in Category C, ran the ad-hoc experiments and participated in the database merging track, producing three sets of official results (fsclt3, fsclt4 and fsclt3m) as well as some unofficial results (fsclt4a). Our long-term research interest is in building information retrieval systems that help users find information to solve real-world problems. Our TREC-5 participation centered on two goals: to see if automatic query reformulation (relevance feedback) provides better results than the searcher's query reformulation; and to evaluate the effectiveness of the document scoring algorithms when searching across multiple databases. Our TREC-5 ad-hoc experiments were designed around a model of an experienced end user of information systems, one who might regularly use a system like the MPS Information Server while seeking information in a workplace or library setting 2 Overview of FS Consulting TREC-5 Experiment

This paper summarizes the results of the work conducted by FS Consulting, Inc. as part of the Seventh Text Retrieval Experiment Conference (TREC-7). We participated in two components of TREC: (1) Category C, running the Ad Hoc experiments, producing two sets of official results (fsclt7m and fsclt7a) and (2) the Very Large Collection (VLC) track, running the entire experiment, producing the required official results as well as a set of unofficial result

Aáž„mad Muáž„ammad Nu‘mĂąn and the process of building a national identity in Yemen

The testimony of Ahmed Num’an, co-founder of the Free Yemeni Movement addresses two different issues. First, it highlights the causes of the political backwardness of the Yemen of the first half of the XXth century: poverty and illiteracy are upheld by an archaic educational system on the one hand as well as by the religious traditionalism and the exploitation of sectarian divisions (sunni/chia) to which the Imam resorts to ensure its authority. Nu’man also makes it possible to understand the paradoxical character of the role played by the Egyptians in the process of modernisation. By strongly supporting the 1962 republican revolution, Nasser did give to the young Yemeni Republic the means of his military victory “by the top”. But by evicting Nu’man and the founders of the main modernisation movement, in favour of his own agents, he has distressed the endogenous character of the dynamics of modernisation, depriving it probably, of part of its own resources. By reversing only, instead of ending the mechanism of sectarian stigmatization (sunni vs shia), the Egyptian influence undoubtedly interfered until nowadays, with the process of building a national identity
