Phase Separation of Saturated and Mono-unsaturated Lipids as determined from a Microscopic Model

A molecular model is proposed of a bilayer consisting of fully saturated DPPC and mono unsaturated DOPC. The model not only encompasses the constant density within the hydrophobic core of the bilayer, but also the tendency of chain segments to align. It is solved within self-consistent field theory. A model bilayer of DPPC undergoes a main chain transition to a gel phase, while a bilayer of DOPC does not do so above zero degrees centigrade because of the double bond which disrupts order. We examine structural and thermodynamic properties of these membranes and find our results in reasonable accord with experiment. In particular, order-parameter profiles are in good agreement with NMR experiments. A phase diagram is obtained for mixtures of these lipids in a membrane at zero tension. The system undergoes phase separation below the main-chain transition temperature of the saturated lipid. Extensions to the ternary DPPC, DOPC, and cholesterol system are outlined.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. revised versio

    On a conjecture of Atiyah

In this note we explain how the computation of the spectrum of the lamplighter group from \cite{Grigorchuk-Zuk(2000)} yields a counterexample to a strong version of the Atiyah conjectures about the range of L2L^2-Betti numbers of closed manifolds.Comment: 8 pages, A4 pape

    Wheat forecast economics effect study

A model to assess the value of improved information regarding the inventories, productions, exports, and imports of crop on a worldwide basis is discussed. A previously proposed model is interpreted in a stochastic control setting and the underlying assumptions of the model are revealed. In solving the stochastic optimization problem, the Markov programming approach is much more powerful and exact as compared to the dynamic programming-simulation approach of the original model. The convergence of a dual variable Markov programming algorithm is shown to be fast and efficient. A computer program for the general model of multicountry-multiperiod is developed. As an example, the case of one country-two periods is treated and the results are presented in detail. A comparison with the original model results reveals certain interesting aspects of the algorithms and the dependence of the value of information on the incremental cost function

Following Strain-Induced Mosaicity Changes of Ferroelectric Thin Films by Ultrafast Reciprocal Space Mapping

We investigate coherent phonon propagation in a thin film of ferroelectric PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) by ultrafast x-ray diffraction (UXRD) experiments, which are analyzed as time-resolved reciprocal space mapping (RSM) in order to observe the in- and out-of-plane structural dynamics simultaneously. The mosaic structure of the PZT leads to a coupling of the excited out-of-plane expansion to in-plane lattice dynamics on a picosecond timescale, which is not observed for out-of-plane compression.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Liquid drop in a cone - line tension effects

The shape of a liquid drop placed in a cone is analyzed macroscopically. Depending on the values of the cone opening angle, the Young angle and the line tension four different interfacial configurations may be realized. The phase diagram in these variables is constructed and discussed; it contains both the first- and the second-order transition lines. In particular, the tricritical point is found and the value of the critical exponent characterizing the behaviour of the system along the line of the first-order transitions in the neighbourhood of this point is determined.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Serum S100B is increased during early treatment with antipsychotics and in deficit schizophrenia

Previous studies reported controversial results concerning alterations of astrocytes in schizophrenia. Because S100B may be regarded as a marker for astrocytes, the objective of this study was to examine S100B serum concentrations in 30 patients with schizophrenia with a monoclonal two-site immunoluminometric assay that specifically detects S100B. An ANOVA revealed medication (p0.05). Patients with deficit (250.6±154.9 ng/l) had higher S100B levels than patients with nondeficit schizophrenia (146.7±107.2 ng/l, p<0.05) or controls (p<0.005). S100B was positively correlated with the subscore ‘thought disturbance’ of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (p<0.05). In summary, increased serum levels of S100B may indicate alterations of astrocytes during early treatment with antipsychotics and in deficit schizophrenia. Whether S100B is elevated due to injured astrocytes and a disrupted blood–brain barrier, or by active secretion of S100B by astrocytes, has to be clarified by further studies

Localisation and colocalisation of KK-theory at sets of primes

Given a set of prime numbers S, we localise equivariant bivariant Kasparov theory at S and compare this localisation with Kasparov theory by an exact sequence. More precisely, we define the localisation at S to be KK^G(A,B) tensored with the ring of S-integers Z[S^-1]. We study the properties of the resulting variants of Kasparov theory.Comment: 16 page
