Photonic-Electronic Ultra-Broadband Signal Processing: Concepts, Devices, and Applications
Combining photonic integrated circuits (PIC) with millimeter-wave electronics opens novel perspectives in generation and detection of ultra-broadband signals with disruptive potential for a wide variety of applications. Here, we will give an overview on our recent progress in the field of ultra-broadband photonic-electronic signal processing, covering device concepts such as silicon plasmonic integration, signal processing concepts such as Kramers-Kronig-based phase reconstruction of THz signals, as well as application demonstrations in the field of high-speed wireless data transmission

Organizing risk: organization and management theory for the risk society
Risk has become a crucial part of organizing, affecting a wide range of organizations in all sectors. We identify, review and integrate diverse literatures relevant to organizing risk, building on an existing framework that describes how risk is organized in three ‘modes’ – prospectively, in real-time, and retrospectively. We then identify three critical issues in the existing literature: its fragmented nature; its neglect of the tensions associated with each of the modes; and its tendency to assume that the meaning of an object in relation to risk is singular and stable. We provide a series of new insights with regard to each of these issues. First, we develop the concept of a risk cycle that shows how organizations engage with all three modes and transition between them over time. Second, we explain why the tensions have been largely ignored and show how studies using a risk work perspective can provide further insights into them. Third, we develop the concept of risk translation to highlight the ways in the meanings of risks can be transformed and to identify the political consequences of such translations. We conclude the paper with a research agenda to elaborate these insights and ideas further
Deposition of ZrO2 and Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 from β-diketonates
The deposition of ZrO2 and Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 from metalorganic β-diketonates by CVD and the evaporation behaviour of those precursors was investigated. Evaporation and deposition processes were correlated with fluiddynamical calculations and found to be in good agreement. The calculations also show that much higher growth rates than achieved until now could be expected (i.e. >1 μm/min)
Multi-lingual informedia: a demonstration of speech recognition and information retrieval across multiple languages
The Multilingual Informedia Project demonstrates a seamless extension of the Informedia approach to search and discovery across video documents in multiple languages. Previously, we successfully demonstrated that current speech recognizers allow accurate information retrieval for automatically processed English news TV broadcasts. The new system performs speech recognition on foreign language news broadcasts, segments it into stories and indexes the foreign data together with existing English news data. This first multi-lingual prototype could easily be extended to other languages. 1
Plasmatechnische Untersuchung zur Realisierung einer inkohaerenten Hochleistungs-UV-Strahlungsquelle Teilprojekt C: Verfahrenstechnische Untersuchungen zur Realisierung von UV-Hochleistungsstrahlern. Abschlussbericht 1991-1993
New powerful UV sources can have a drastic impact on the growing UV-market. Within this subproject C various engineering solutions towards the realization of high-power radiation sources (excimer-UV-lamps) were investigated. Starting from the state of the art (section A, B) new concepts for excimer-UV-equipment (e.g. large area or internal radiators) which could be transferred directly to industrial plants (sections C - G) were developed. In addition, emphasis was put on the application of these excimer UV lamps in areas, such as surface metallization, modification of polymer surfaces, and UV-induced decomposition of hazardous materials. Also, a brief discussion regarding the evaluation and marketability of the excimer-UV technology was included.
