    Pregnancy and Pandemic

    In this article, I examine through personal narrative my experience as a sculptor, arts educator, and pregnant woman during the COVID-19 crisis paired with comparable stories and anecdotes collected from other pregnant women’s experiences during the pandemic. I hope to explore the effects—social, mental, and career related—of being at different stages of pregnancy during this international crisis. Working in a collaborative environment, such as an art studio, I have gained tremendous support over the years from fellow women, some of whom are also mothers, on how to navigate the ins and outs of working in fine arts academia. Now with the current pandemic underway, these resources are still present yet distant, as they virtually manage and maintain their own family units and careers.The 2019-2020 academic year was also my first year in a tenure-track faculty role. I am curious about the effects of COVID-19 and the additional effects of being pregnant in a pandemic. What toll will this crisis take on my career as a young female educator and on my perspective as a new mother? I have gathered information from other pregnant women who are experiencing pregnancy during this crisis and have included their statements in this article. I am interested in perspectives of women both in arts-related careers and outside of the arts as well. Although my voice and experience may be the dominant thread throughout the writing, the unifying theme will be of the resilience of the female mind and body, especially during these dynamic and precarious times of pregnancy and pandemic

    Synthesis, characterization, electrochemistry, and ring-opening polymerization of heavier group 13 bridged metallocenophanes

    The synthesis of two types of metallocenophanes is described: strained, ring-tilted [1]metallocenophanes with Al and Ga in bridging positions and Fe and Ru as transition elements and unstrained [1.1]ferrocenophanes with Al, Ga and In in bridging positions. [1]Metallocenophanes are potential monomers for the synthesis of organometallic polymers via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). After the successful synthesis of various starting monomers using the concept of intramolecular coordinating ligands, four different pathways of ROP were investigated. However, only one of these pathways proved successful in obtaining polymeric material. The starting monomers showed a surprising stability against commonly used initiators. This was attributed to an overly steric protection by the intramolecular coordinating ligands, thereby blocking the initiators, and a reduced ring strain, a consequence of the size of the bridging element.[1.1]Ferrocenophanes belong to a class of dinuclear complexes where the two redox-active iron atoms are in close proximity with restricted flexibility. [1.1]Ferrocenophanes with Al, Ga and In in bridging positions were investigated. The redox properties of previously published [1.1]ferrocenophanes showed a fully reversible, stepwise, one-electron oxidation (FeII/FeII → FeII/FeIII → FeIII/FeIII). After the initial oxidation of the first iron center, a stable, mixed-valent monocationic species is created. The removal of a second electron from the second iron center therefore is more difficult, and occurs at higher potential to create the dicationic species. The difference in potential for the stepwise oxidation is directly related to the delocalization of the charge in the mixed-valent species. This delocalization mainly depends on the electronic properties of the bridging element. Depending on the bridging group 13 element, very different electrochemical properties were observed. For the alumina[1.1]ferrocenophane, no delocalization was detected, and a one-step, two-electron oxidation at the same potential was observed. For the inda[1.1]ferrocenophane, a more complex electrochemistry was observed that we attributed to an isomerization of the compound in solution.     Greetings from... is a reflection of my roots in the tropical vacationland of Florida, a place for which I feel both nostalgic and conflicted. Growing up in southern tourist destinations, I was confronted daily with the extreme contrasts of living in paradise. In my artwork, I am translating the cacophony of Florida through the lens of materiality. By re-configuring commodified objects of the tourism industry, the sculptural works in this show exhibit my consideration for the paradoxical relationships that exist between materials and place. Much like the avant-garde Surrealist object, or the assemblage of found materials in provocative combinations that challenged reason, I am interested in drawing parallels between the irrational juxtaposition of objects and ideas. My research is relevant within the context of contemporary artists like Elizabeth Turk, Maurizio Cattelan, and Tara Donovan who are creating politically and socially engaged art, critically exploring concepts of materiality, and reinterpreting traditional craft techniques and processes.     Characterization of a 21 amino acid peptide sequence of the laminin G2 domain that is involved in HNK-1 carbohydrate binding and cell adhesion

    The N-linked HNK-1 carbohydrate expressed by several recognition molecules mediates the adhesion of early postnatal cerebellar neurons to the G2 domain of the terminal globular domain of the laminin α1 chain (H.Hall et al., submitted). To define this binding site more precisely, G2-derived synthetic peptides were used for binding and competition studies. Peptide 5-G2, comprising the amino acid residues 3431-3451 of G2, inhibited the interaction between the HNK-1-carrying glycolipid and laminin in a concentrationdependent and saturable manner. Peptides which overlap only partially with this sequence interfered less. Peptides comprising other amino acid sequences from G2, and peptides derived from G1 and G3 or a scrambled version of peptide 5-G2, did not show significant effects. Direct binding of peptide 5-G2 to the HNK-1 glycolipid was also demonstrated. Furthermore, peptide 5-G2 interfered in a concentration-dependent and saturable manner with the adhesion of early postnatal cerebellar neurons to laminin.
